Where did they begin? In the late 1990s, Jeff Druek founded the company having come from an “American entrepreneur” and former merchant mariner background. These hulls are usually the least efficient with an uncomfortable ride since they go "through the water" and across the top of the water which, if rough, can be felt fully. This wouldn’t be the first choice when looking at cruising yachts.

Looking for the best of a combination of each, then interest will be high for the Semi-displacement hull design. With an impressive range and it’s additional capabilities, the Semi-displacement vessel boasts of power being able to achieve greater speeds when required. Reviewed: The Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

It all started on a first date, the time when conversation begins to reveal two people to one another. “My dream is to sell everything, get a yacht and go cruising,” Dan said. Sandy simply replied, “Me too.”

“So I asked her for a second date,” Dan says today, 11 years later, as the couple is fulfilling that dream aboard their Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht Sandana .

The duo spent more than three years looking at boats and builders before choosing Outer Reef because, as Dan says, “They were willing to make every change we wanted.”

Speaking of which, there’s a quirk to this tale. Most people who cruise the way this couple do are retirees — but not Dan, who continues his career in business development. “In this digital world,” he says, “I can work perfectly aboard our boat anywhere we’re cruising.” Grinning, he adds, “My desk in our master stateroom is bigger than the one I have at home.”

Dan and Sandy are not just planning to live aboard. They also have adventurous cruising plans: the U.S. East Coast, Caribbean, Central America, Alaska and, as Dan says, “Who knows?” Outer Reef was a good fit because it designs its boats for short-handed cruising, and each is built to European Union Category A, Ocean, capable of handling winds exceeding Beaufort Force 8 and seas bigger than 20 feet.

Additionally, the couple knew what layout they wanted: a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartship), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. (Ocean Reef plans to build on the latter concept; future 610s will allow the berths to slide together into a double.)

The layout requests created extra stowage under the stairs for suitcases and provisions, plus a walk-in lazarette with unfettered access to the yacht’s systems and stowage for dive tanks, cases of wine and more — all in keeping with the characteristics that drew the couple to Outer Reef in the first place.

The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. On the creature-comfort side, the Portuguese bridge has a settee for enjoying a sundowner on the hook.

Inside, I’d point to the galley as thoughtfully designed for cruising, with a center island that’s just right for leaning against with your steaming cup of morning coffee. Plus, two deep pantries and an LG fridge allow provisioning for longer voyages. There’s a pass-through to the pilothouse dinette, which also could make a good pilot berth when needed.

That’s not to say the 610 is chiefly utilitarian. Cabinets and drawers are grain-matched teak, and a thin holly inlay outlines the teak salon sole — each a nice dash of fine craftsmanship.

The 610’s styling continues belowdecks, along with its cruising-ready amenities. In the lower companionway is a hidden, stacked washer/dryer, and the owner’s stateroom is set up for living aboard with a walk-in closet and a bureau to port. That bureau has five 30-inch-deep drawers for her and five more for him. The VIP stateroom is forward, with an en suite head that the guest stateroom across the companionway shares.

Because this Outer Reef 610 is going to be used as a liveaboard vessel, the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). Instead, a pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port, creating an airy feel and a panoramic view through the windows.

The flybridge has a fiberglass hardtop that delineates the forward living area, which includes a centerline helm, Stidd pedestal chair, dinette and settee. Aft, the boat deck accommodates a 13-foot AB Nautilus DLX tender with a 60 hp Yamaha outboard. There’s also room for kayaks or water toys, and the outdoor galley with barbecue and fridge isn’t cramped. That hardtop, by the way, is strong enough to walk on, according to the builder. Access is via a fixed ladder.

Power for the 610 is from a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions. Sandana is also fitted with a Northern Lights 12 kW genset to back up the standard 16 kW unit. The electrical system includes a pair of 50-amp isolation transformers and a 2.5 kW inverter/charger, plus a 3 kW inverter/charger. These redundancies should bring peace of mind in faraway harbors.

The yacht also has 15.5 hp Side-Power electric bow and stern thrusters, and ABT-Trac 220 stabilizers with 6-square-foot fins for stability offshore. The engine room has stainless-steel, removable workbenches over each engine.

Sandana turns 34-inch props and tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. Fuel economy is good across the rpm range: The yacht burns 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow Sandana to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

At a good size for owner-operators, the Outer Reef 610 is superbly built and thoughtfully designed, making it one of the top trawlers on the market . For this particular 610, the home port painted on the stern should read “Everywhere.”

Vessel Walkthrough:

BAD-LAD has substantial volume and exceptional performance in various open water conditions. Her interior, featuring cherry wood and granite, exudes elegance while ensuring a peaceful atmosphere. Equipped with top-notch stability, systems, and ample space, BAD-LAD guarantees a secure and luxurious cruising experience for her future owners, with the added benefit of retaining high value.

With its cherry interior and stunning burled maple inlays in the window mullions, the main salon exudes a sense of warmth and luxury. The custom-made sofa to port easily transforms into a full-size bed, offering both comfort and functionality. The cabinetry is of exceptional quality, featuring beveled glass display cases that enhance the inviting atmosphere of the space.

Moving forward from the salon is the Galley, which is equipped with top-of-the-line KitchenAid stainless steel appliances, including a gas stove for gourmet cooking. The double stainless steel sink provides convenience for meal preparation and clean-up, while the granite countertops offer both durability and elegance.

Going forward from the galley, you will find a day head to starboard with a beautiful onyx countertop. Continuing forward leads you into a well-appointed pilothouse, complete with exceptional seating for 6 in a U-shaped layout that provides excellent visibility. The instruments are meticulously arranged for easy access and comprehensive functionality. A single Stidd helm chair with black upholstery sits at the wheel for ultimate comfort and control. Exit options include access to the side decks on either port or starboard, ascending to the flybridge, or descending to the master and guest staterooms.

Stepping down from the pilothouse and moving forward, you will find the luxurious VIP cabin. Featuring a comfortable queen-sized bed with ample hanging storage space and drawers, this cabin offers a cozy retreat. Above, a full-size hatch brightens the space with natural light. The private head is equipped with a spacious shower, and the countertops and fixtures have been recently upgraded for a modern and elegant look.

Moving down the hall aft, there is the GE stacked front load washer/dryer to starboard and a stateroom located to the port side. This cozy cabin is furnished with two single beds, providing comfortable sleeping arrangements for guests. Ample storage options are available for clothing and personal items. Adjacent to the stateroom is a private head, complete with a shower for added convenience and privacy.

Further down the hall, the full beam master stateroom awaits with a luxurious king-size bed. A spacious walk-in closet is located on the starboard side, offering plenty of storage for clothing and personal items. The master bath is situated on the port side, providing ultimate privacy and convenience. Featuring two sinks, a separate area for the toilet, and a full-size shower, the master bath is designed for comfort and relaxation.

As you move aft from the master on the starboard side, you enter the ship's office with plenty of storage space and shelves to house all ships' records with space to spare. Also, the main breaker panel is in this area along with an entryway into the engine room.

The engine room is a crew area equipped with a sleeping cabin for two crew members, as well as a crew head with a shower located to the port side. Additionally, you'll find an extra Kitchenaid side-by-side refrigerator, microwave, sink, and storage space in this area. Continuing aft from the crew area, you will exit onto the swim deck for easy access to the water.

The flybridge is spacious and offers a wide, unobstructed view of the surrounding water. Two large L-shaped settees provide ample seating for guests, with a central hi/lo cocktail table for drinks and snacks. The FRP molded helm station is located forward, featuring easily accessible controls and excellent visibility. Below the helm console, a large storage area offers convenient space for stowing gear and supplies. Two comfortable Stidd helm chairs with powder-coated bases and white upholstery are mounted on the flybridge, each equipped with a full Sunbrella cover for protection.

A sliding hatch on the starboard side reveals the stairway leading down to the pilothouse. In the forward area, Stainless Steel safety rails with Venturi screens provide protection. The entire flybridge and boat deck are enclosed by Stainless Steel railing. A full hardtop extends over the entire space, with teak decking underneath. Semi-rigid spray curtains are available for added comfort and protection in this area.

Aft of the settees and down two steps, under the hardtop, there are cabinets to port and starboard. The port cabinet offers ample deep storage space, while the starboard cabinet features a covered sink basin, a U-Line refrigerator, and an Alfresco stainless steel BBQ gas grill. Two propane tanks, along with the regulator and solenoid control, are stowed on the starboard side behind and beneath the settee.

The top of the hardtop can be accessed via a removable stainless steel ladder from the boat deck. A radar mast with two deck lights is located on the hardtop. Additionally, the boat deck is equipped with a Brower Systems 2000 lb power rotation hydraulic davit and powder-coated chocks that cradle a 13.5' Nautica RIB with a 60 hp Yamaha engine.

The aft deck is generously sized, comfortably accommodating a party of six or more. The teak dining table on the aft deck is elegantly finished in high gloss. With a dedicated 18,000 BTU AC unit and a full enclosure, the aft deck remains cozy even in hot weather. A Marquipt sea stair that stows on the starboard side can conveniently provide access from two doors on either side of boat, while the ship's Carlisle and Finch 12" 230v halogen chrome searchlight is mounted on the brow with controls at both helm stations. Aqua Signal navigation lights and two LED underwater lights are also mounted on the transom. Additionally, all exterior settees come with full covers for protection.

The engine room is well-designed with easy access to all equipment, exceptional lighting, ventilation, and sound insulation. It is fully lined with sound-absorbing material for a quieter cruising experience. Ventilation in the engine room is provided by two 115v AC and two 24v engine room blowers, ensuring optimal airflow for engine performance.

•Tides dripless shaft seals mounted on the 3" shafts powering 4 blade Nibral propellers.

•Outboard of each engine is a 1000 gallon fuel tank with sight glasses. Below the floor is an additional 1000 Gal fuel tank for a total of 3000 gallons.

•At 1250 RPM's she cruises comfortably at 9.5 knots, and with one generator working, the burn rate is 20 GPH. This translates to a 1425 NM range. At 8 knots, the range is 2000 miles with 12 GPH fuel burn.

•Engines are controlled at each station by Glendinning engine controls.

•Underwater exhaust system with bypass FRP mufflers.

•Fiberglass drip pans are under each engine.

•There are two Northern Lights 25 KW generators. Either will power the entire vessel. Each generator is in a full Northern Lights sound shield. The exhaust is an uplift water exhaust system for quiet operation.

•The main electrical distribution panel is well set up with easy-to-read gauges and circuit breakers for 230v and 115v systems.

•50 amp Glendinning Cablemaster with 100' of cable on the transom plus one additional 50 amp shore power inlet on the transom.

•2 selectable Racor 75/1000 fuel filters for each engine and one 75/1000 Racor for each generator. This means only one filter size needs to be inventoried. There is also a Racor 75/1000 dedicated to the fuel transfer system.

•The vessel's steering is Hynautic hydraulic steering at both stations.

•(2) Maxwell VWC 4000C hydraulic vertical windlasses on the foredeck with foot switches and dual anchor rollers (There are also remote controls at both helm stations)

•Stainless Steel Delta 175 Lb plow anchor fitted with 350' of 1/2" HT chain.

•38 HP ABT hydraulic bow and stern thrusters.

•Stabilizers are hydraulic ABT Trac model 250 with 27" x 41" fins.

•Algae-X Fuel polishing system.

•Engines are plumbed for easy oil change services, and there is a 40-gallon S/S oil reservoir tank plumbed into the vessel.

•The engines are mounted on an Evolution anti-vibration mounting system with engineered soft mounts.

•All thru-hulls are ball-valve bronze seacocks on all thru-hulls below the waterline.

•Air-conditioning is supplied by a chilled loop Cruise Air 230v system rated at 96,000 BTU with reverse cycle heat.

•There is also an additional self-contained 16,000 BTU backup air conditioning unit dedicated to the master stateroom, which can be powered by the inverters and is capable of running for approximately 8 hours.

•Another 18,000 BTU AC unit is dedicated to the Aft Deck

•1800 gallon per day water maker

•Nutone's central vacuum system is on board.

•Plumbing and Tankage

•High water bilge alarm system with a pilothouse display and alarm system in the crew quarters. The bilges are equipped with four automatic 24v DC bilge pumps, plus there is an emergency engine-driven backup pump. In the engine room is also a manual bilge pump.

•There are (3) 24v DC shower sump pumps.

•Fuel tanks are aluminum, three tanks of 1000 gallons each.

•The freshwater tank is S/S and 500 gallons. The freshwater system is supplied by a Headhunter X-Caliber 24v DC water pump or Headhunter XR-124 115v AC water pump. These pumps, along with the accumulator tank, were upgrades from the standard at the time of the build.

•The holding tank is 200 gallons and constructed of FRP. There is a macerator pump. Each tank is equipped with clean-out access and sight glasses.

•The fuel management system has an S/S manifold for supply and return and is well labeled.

•Freshwater can be brought onboard on either the bow or stern.

•(2) 18-gallon hot water heaters connected to the engine heat exchangers.

•Freshwater outlets on the foredeck, aft deck, and flybridge for easy washing.

•On the foredeck and aft deck, there are outlets for the saltwater washdown system.

•Plumbing fixtures in the galley, heads, and showers are Grohe fixtures.

•The toilets in the 3 staterooms' private heads plus the day head are all Headhunter fixtures.

•The crew toilet is a Techma electric fixture.

•Handheld shower mounted in a recessed box on the transom with hot and cold water.

Construction:

•Hand laid-up FRP hull with foam sandwich construction above the waterline.

•Vinyl ester barrier in the outer lamination for osmosis protection.

•The deck, deckhouse, and flybridge were all hand-laid with PVC foam core sandwich.

•Full hull length keel with longitudinal engine stringers and athwartship stringers.

•Salon glass is all 3/8" tempered glass, and in the pilothouse, there is 1/2" tempered glass.

•Rub rail construction is solid with S/S caping.

•Bilge areas are finished smooth and coated with epoxy paint.

•The swim platform is part of the hull, and there is an integrated S/S swim ladder on the centerline.

•There are S/S rudders with dripless shaft bearings (The rudder table was rebuilt and substantially improved)

•Emergency manual tiller.
