Behind the Scenes with Superyacht Nanny Ella Peters

super yacht nanny

Have you always dreamed of working as a superyacht nanny? Or are you considering dipping your toes into what is a highly complex yet rewarding role on board? Then let us introduce you to Ella Peters.

Boasting years of experience working as a superyacht nanny, Ellie has supported families all over the world on board sailing yachts and motor yachts, working with little ones to keep them happy, safe and entertained.

Bringing all her knowledge together through the recently launched SuperyachtNanny.co, her aim is to help and support those already working in, or looking to explore this niche role in yachting.

Here Ella shares her thoughts on some of the most popular questions she’s asked about onboard childcare.

What does the role of a superyacht nanny involve?

Superyacht nanny roles cover the entertainment and safeguarding of children on board. Nannies accompany the family on excursions, entertain the children in the water and are responsible for children’s wardrobe management and bedtime routines along with a host of other duties. The yacht chefs prepare all children’s food, and that for the nanny. Steward/esses take care of service and housekeeping, but the nanny should always pick up after the children, keep her cabin tidy, and a little housekeeping support is always appreciated by the stews.

What is the most exciting part of the job?

I personally love the variety the role offers, from private jet travel to the yacht, taking little ones for Italian gelato and winding down with a bedtime story after a laugh-filled day in the sunshine are just beautiful experiences to be involved in.

Ella Peters 600x400 2

What is most challenging aspect of the role?

When working with children, safety is paramount – and this is never more true than when on board a yacht. That said, being there without being too present is an art form you quickly develop, although it isn’t always that easy when working in confined spaces.

Parents want to know their children are safe and being entertained, and you quickly get to gauge how much involvement the children are expected to have with parents and guests during the day. But don’t worry, as this is a skill that develops with experience.

The role also means that you are not part of the crew, but you’re not a guest either so it often takes some juggling to get the dynamics right. But always remember that keeping the crew on side makes a huge difference to everybody’s overall experience.

Are nannies expected to wear crew uniform?

This differs from yacht to yacht. Some roles require yacht uniform to be worn at all times, while on other jobs it’s only required while on board and you’re able to wear your own personal (but always professionally appropriate) clothes for trips ashore.

Some families prefer the nanny not to wear uniform at all, and instead wear personal clothes. If you are unsure what to wear, ask the PA, chief stew or whoever you are most in contact with, but linen shirts and shorts of appropriate length, quick-to-put on sandals and a modest swimming costume always come with me. You can never be too prepared and guest preferences can change.

Ella Peters 600x400 4

Where do you sleep while on board?

This is another situation which depends on the family needs, preferences and where there is actually a spare bed! Often the role can require the nanny to share a cabin with the child they are looking after, sometimes you have your own guest cabin, or you may be expected to share a crew cabin. It’s always helpful to ask what is expected prior to accepting the role, as this can hugely impact on the dynamics of the job.

How do you handle water safety situations? Do you need to be a good swimmer?

As safety on board is paramount - especially with little ones - being confident in the water is typically required and a big part of the role. That said, the crew is also there to support with water sports and on safety matters, so don’t be afraid to ask for their support.

Are you on board full time or are the roles on a freelance basis?

The majority of nannying roles are freelance. Permanent stew-nanny jobs do exist, but these are rather few and far between. There are ‘nanny only’ positions, and these are even less common. As to be expected, the vast majority of freelance positions are aligned with school holidays.

Ella Peters 600x400 5

Do you plan activities or just go with the flow of what the interior crew have prepared?

I’m a stickler for being prepared. I always try to plan a few steps ahead to ensure I am not left in a tricky situation that can impact on the day or the parents’ plans. For example, if you think the family will stop at the beach for a dip after their planned ice cream excursion, play it safe and take swim wear and towels.

The interior crew often plan special evenings and other events throughout the trip, so speak with them ahead of time and work as a team to create the most memorable experiences for all guests.

And the best part of the job?

I absolutely love working with children, and the nature of super yachting means each experience is very different from the last. As a nanny you get to experience and see amazing locations around the world, and also play an integral role in the smooth running of the family’s holiday. Being a part of making summer memories is such a special feeling and I am honoured to be a part of the family’s time on board.

Set sail for success with a superyacht nanny for your little ones

Ella, with her vast experience as a superyacht nanny, offers a rare glimpse into the intricate world of onboard charter childcare. Throughout her illustrious career, she has had the honor of caring for children during some of the most luxurious voyages. From tandem charters on grand 80-metre yachts, thrilling jet skiing escapades around the iconic Faraglioni Rocks of Capri, to being part of the esteemed Porto Cervo Rolex Regatta with young charges, Ella has seen it all.

The essence of a successful charter often lies in the details. One such detail is ensuring that the childcare onboard aligns perfectly with the unique needs of each family, enhancing the overall charter experience. An expert superyacht nanny, like Ella, understands the intricacies of working harmoniously with the crew, security, and other staff members. Their expertise transforms the guest experience, addressing every childcare-related nuance, whether big or small. Given the demanding nature of onboard childcare, which often operates around the clock, it’s imperative to have professionals like Ella who can provide constant care and maintain a joyful environment for the children.

Safety is paramount, especially when it comes to water activities. Superyacht nannies are trained rigorously in water safety protocols, ensuring children can enjoy water sports without compromising their safety. Their proficiency extends beyond the yacht; whether it’s managing travel logistics on private jets or seamlessly navigating airport challenges with children, they ensure a hassle-free voyage for the entire family.

A truly exceptional superyacht nanny aims to curate a charter experience that is unparalleled. They create lasting memories for the children, ensuring consistent moments of joy and discovery throughout the journey. Their familiarity with top yachting destinations allows them to customize activities, even in locations not typically known for being child-friendly.

Finding the right superyacht nanny can be a challenge. But platforms like superyachtnanny.co, where Ella plays a pivotal role, provide access to top-tier nannies. Additionally, Ella collaborates with leading yachting agencies, further enhancing the chances of finding the perfect match.

The interview process is crucial. Whether families opt for agency-driven recruitment or rely on trusted referrals, it’s essential to delve deep and ask the right questions to ensure the selected candidate meets the family’s unique needs.

Recent industry trends have highlighted a shift. More families are choosing to give their full-time nannies a holiday break, opting instead for specialized superyacht nannies during their charters. Multi-generational charters are also on the rise, emphasizing the importance of having expert childcare support onboard to cater to varied needs. Safety considerations, unique to yacht settings, underscore the necessity for more hands-on childcare.

Expected qualifications for a superyacht nanny include a thorough background check, pediatric first aid training, and nanny insurance. Additionally, certifications in languages, lifeguarding, jet ski operation, and children’s psychology can significantly elevate the care provided.

Embarking on a charter voyage can be exhilarating. The initial enthusiasm might be coupled with the chaos of acclimatization, especially for young children. But with the right preparation and by enlisting the services of a dedicated superyacht nanny, families can ensure a journey filled with adventure, relaxation, and cherished memories. For those seeking specialized superyacht nanny services, Ella and her team at superyachtnanny.co are ever-ready to assist and elevate your charter experience.

Understanding the Role of a Yacht Nanny

A yacht nanny, also referred to as a yacht governess, holds the unique position of taking care of children aboard luxury yachts. The responsibilities go beyond traditional child care – it encompasses ensuring children’s safety on board, their educational needs, and facilitating fun-filled activities while sailing across the beautiful horizons.

Exploring the Job Requirements for a Yacht Nanny

To become a yacht nanny, there are certain prerequisites that potential employers will look for:

Education and Certifications

As with traditional nannies, a diploma in child development or a related field can give you an edge. Certifications in first aid, CPR, and water safety are also paramount due to the nature of the work environment.

Skills and Experience

Previous experience with children, excellent swimming skills, flexibility, adaptability, and a love for travel are some of the attributes a yacht nanny should have.

How to Gain Relevant Experience

Working in a traditional nanny role.

Starting as a land-based nanny can provide you with the necessary child care experience. This is where you can master skills like managing children’s schedules, understanding their needs, and fostering a safe environment for them.

Getting Experience on a Yacht

Try to find opportunities that allow you to experience life on a yacht. This can help you become accustomed to the unique challenges posed by a moving workplace.

Finding Yacht Nanny Job Opportunities

Look for job postings on websites specifically tailored for yacht crew vacancies.

Network with individuals in the industry. Social media and professional networking sites can be useful for this.

Yacht Crew Agencies

Register with agencies that specialize in yacht crew placement. They can connect you with yacht owners seeking nannies.

How to Prepare for a Yacht Nanny Interview

Researching about the employer.

Before the interview, try to learn as much as you can about the family and their lifestyle. This can help you better align your responses to their needs.

Practicing Commonly Asked Questions

Prepare yourself by considering how you would answer typical interview questions, particularly those focusing on how you would handle scenarios on a yacht.

The Importance of a Yacht Nanny Contract

A contract is critical in ensuring your rights are protected. It should clearly state your duties, working hours, salary, and other benefits.

Pros and Cons of Being a Yacht Nanny

While the job comes with unique perks like traveling to exotic locations and high pay, it also has its downsides. Long working hours, isolation from family and friends, and limited personal space can be challenging.

The Lifestyle of a Yacht Nanny

Yacht nannies often lead a lifestyle marked by adventure, luxury, and hard work. You’ll need to embrace a flexible routine and adapt to the family’s schedule.

Career Growth and Development Opportunities

While it might seem like a niche role, being a yacht nanny can offer substantial career growth. With time and experience, you could progress into roles like head nanny or even manage a team of child care professionals on larger vessels.

The qualifications to become a yacht nanny typically include a high school diploma or higher, alongside certifications in first aid, CPR, and water safety. Having a degree in child development or a related field can give you an edge. Additionally, previous experience working with children and good swimming skills are important.

Yacht nanny job vacancies can be found on specialized yacht crew job boards online, social media, professional networking sites, and through yacht crew agencies. Networking within the industry can also open up job opportunities.

To prepare for a yacht nanny interview, do some background research about the family and their lifestyle. Practice answering common interview questions, especially scenario-based questions related to the life and challenges on a yacht.

A yacht nanny contract should clearly outline your responsibilities, working hours, salary, benefits, and terms and conditions related to termination or resignation. It’s crucial to read and understand the contract thoroughly before signing.

As a yacht nanny, there are several career growth opportunities. With experience, you can progress to roles such as head nanny or child care team manager on larger vessels. Furthermore, the unique skills and experiences gained in this role could also open doors to other high-profile nanny positions.

A Day in The Life of a Superyacht Nanny

super yacht nanny

Ella (also known as  @superyachtnanny ) shares what her day-to-day life is like as superyacht nanny!

Hi, I’m Ella (a.k.a. @superyachtnanny ), with over eight years’ experience in yachting, six of which have been as a superyacht nanny, I have a wealth of expertise in childcare roles and stew life onboard.

Having worked on some of the largest and most prestigious yachts in the world, to caring for charges whilst racing classic sailing superyachts, working with triplets and even some ski nanny work, I truly have been there, done it, and got the T shirt (or rash vest!).

The world of superyacht childcare is certainly a niche area – I really love what I do and find people are often interested in what the work involves. So, what does a typical day look like whilst nannying onboard? With no two days ever the same, plans can change at the drop of a hat, and you are always kept on your toes.

Here’s what a typical day can look like:

Get up always before the children. As a start time is never specified, I just ensure I am up, ready and looking smart for when they rise.

Breakfast time

Kids enjoy breakfast, which is normally out on deck. There are always incredible fruit platters (with the best fresh Mediterranean produce), and they can order whatever they like – waffles and crepes are always a favourite!

If the yacht is not moving (underway) the morning is a great time to do water sports !

Especially as the sun is not too strong yet. Deck crew will be on hand to help with everything water related.

This is normally served family style (if the little ones are eating with the adults). I either join them and help with the meal, or the kids eat separately from the adults, which is normally a little earlier.

If nearby the port, the afternoons are a perfect time for a little trip ashore to find some ice cream or look for shells on the beach! We take the tender in (the little boat) as the yacht is often too big to fit into the marina.

The chef(s) prepare the dinner for the children, which is normally before the adults dinner – as that can get really late! Also, after such a busy day doing water sports and all the other exciting things onboard, kids get really hungry!

Movie time! A movie night in the onboard cinema, snuggle them up with blankets and popcorn, to round off another special day onboard.  If we don’t fancy a movie, we often do arts and crafts – which is a personal favourite of mine!

Sometimes parents do the bedtime routine and sometimes it’s the responsibility of the nanny. I like to end the day with a bedtime story or a made-up adventure of the exciting things we will do tomorrow.
