Viking Yachts 82 Convertible Reviewed
- By Sam White
- June 24, 2024
It’s a milestone few boatbuilders ever achieve, but as Viking Yacht Company celebrated its much-heralded 60th anniversary on April 1, 2024, it announced the introduction of its latest sport-fisherman: the 82 Convertible.
“We’ve taken a boat that has been proclaimed by the sport-fishing community as the most successful 80-foot sportfish boat ever and improved upon it,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey, referring to the previous model in the company’s lineup. “We’ve been able to design and build a better boat by using our experiences on multiple Viking 80 demo boats and collecting a tremendous amount of feedback from owners, captains and mates. And like every new model, the 82 is going to be bad-ass—another industry leader.”
Hull No. 1 was completed in May, 2024, and first displayed during the Viking Yachts and Valhalla Boatworks Dealer Meeting in early June. That boat is serving as the company’s summer demonstrator vessel, fishing in a slew of high-profile marlin tournaments along the East Coast.
The 82 will be offered in three different models: open bridge, enclosed bridge and sky bridge. Hull No. 1 is an open-bridge model with a Pamlico Blue gelcoat and a custom tuna tower from Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers. The boat’s performance was optimized through the extensive use of computational fluid dynamics software, which allowed the in-house design and engineering team to analyze the longitudinal center of gravity and pressure distribution, study trim angle and trim tab effectiveness, and modify strakes and chines to increase running efficiency.
The Viking 82 is offered with the Advanced Viking Propulsion System, which utilizes struts and rudders with modified shapes to minimize hydrodynamic resistance and improve performance. “The strut is designed to improve the in-flow of water to the propeller, while the rudder minimizes resistance in the flow of water from the propeller,” says Viking Naval Architect Joe Snodgrass. “These improvements allow us to use a larger propeller to gain additional speed.” With twin 2,600 hp MTU 16V2000 M96Ls and the Advanced Viking Propulsion System, performance levels are in the same range as the latest Viking 80s—42 knots at full load with a cruise of 36 knots.
The nearly 230-square-foot cockpit is set up for big-fish battles, just add your preferred fighting chair. The mezzanine provides a perch to keep an eye on the spread and it has two refrigerated boxes as well as two freezer boxes for stowing baits, drinks and more. There are two in-sole, split-lid fish boxes as well as a transom livewell and liftgate tuna door.
The interior has a horizontal-grain natural walnut throughout—available in satin- or high-gloss finishes—and interior doors with horizontal and vertical grains and ebony inlays. To port, there’s a convenient day head; the open-concept salon design features three distinct gathering areas with a straight walkway that extends from the salon door to the forepeak, accentuating the sense of volume.
A wraparound sofa to starboard, with stowage below and accompanied by a hi-lo walnut table, provides an excellent view of the portside HDTV, which rises from the entertainment center cabinetry. Forward on the port side, the dinette accommodates five guests with plush seating and a walnut table. The dinette is on a raised platform, giving guests an excellent view outside while providing rod stowage in a pull-out drawer below.
The galley’s fore-and-aft style maximizes usable space with two under-counter refrigerators and one freezer beneath a second dining area with a raised bar and three stools. The outboard counter accommodates a double stainless-steel sink, electric cooktop, conventional oven and drawer stowage. A microwave oven, trash compactor, dishwasher and upper and lower cabinet stowage round out the conveniences.
The Viking 82’s larger size is also evident in the forepeak, where there are five generously appointed staterooms and additional space in the companionway for a dedicated rod-and-tackle locker as well as a laundry center. The rod-and-tackle locker can be customized to the owner’s liking, while walnut doors conceal both of these spaces.
The full-beam master stateroom is amidships and accessed via a private staircase off the companionway. It has a king-size, walk-around berth. Hanging closets as well as credenzas flank the berth, and there is a vanity/desk area with stool to starboard and a seating area to port. The en suite head has twin sinks with stowage below and a walk-in shower.
All staterooms have en suite heads with separate showers. The forepeak VIP and the guest stateroom aft has walk-around queen berths. A guest and crew stateroom are to port, each with upper and lower berths. The crew stateroom is adjacent to the rod-and-tackle locker.
The flybridge takes several design cues from the Viking 90 and is anchored by a walkaround center console with a full-width helm platform. The console’s recessed, black-acrylic dash holds four 17-inch multifunction displays. The helm has dual radio boxes with split lids with instrumentation and controls, a teak helm pod, single-lever electronic controls and a stainless- steel steering wheel. There are three Release Marine helm chairs. Air conditioning is optional. Hull No. 1 has a custom navigation, communication, fishfinding and entertainment package from Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics.
The 82 utilizes many proven systems, including digital switching from Octoplex as well as the Optimus Electronic Power Steering system. In addition, the 82 is engineered for many systems previously provided as custom installations that are now offered as optional components, such as omnidirectional sonar, multiple watermakers and crushed ice machines, tuna tube bait systems as well as the extensive use of refrigerated stowage boxes.
As sport-fishers continue to push the limits of size and performance, Viking Yacht Company’s 82 Convertible embodies the hard won knowledge and experience of 60 years of boatbuilding.

Viking 68 Boat Review
- By Capt. Jen Copeland
- Updated: May 8, 2018
With a coveted invitation to Viking Yacht Company’s annual VIP preview event in hand, I set out to see what the company had in store for 2018 and beyond. The New Gretna, New Jersey, builder’s new 68 Convertible undeniably proves that Viking is living up to its company motto of building a better boat every day. After my sea trial, I caught up with Viking vice president of sales Joe Schwab and senior project engineer Bill Gibbons, who offered insight on the company’s newest addition to its fleet of sport-fishing thoroughbreds.
At first glance, there is no mistaking the sleek styling and clean lines of a Viking Yacht ; the new 68-footer is no exception. In fact, the boat’s profile is quite striking.
“Our evolution from one model to another incorporates what we learn from the last build to the next, improving as we get feedback from our demo team and our customers,” says Schwab. “We put our best foot forward with every boat we build,” says Gibbons. Assisting the Viking Design and Engineering Department from inception to post-delivery, and with more than 3,000 Viking builds in his 42-year tenure with the company, Gibbons expects excellence with every new model. “We have great technology to help ensure our ideas come to fruition, but it’s still exciting every time I hit the throttles for the first time. We nailed it again with the 68.”

Cockpit and Flybridge
Viking prides itself on the outstanding fishability of its boats. Its demonstrator teams fish hard on tournament circuits on the East and Gulf coasts and in the Pacific. Having built two Vikings myself, I can attest to the fact that the boats are well laid out in every respect. The cockpit of the 68 proves that form follows function, with plenty of room for mates and anglers to work during a busy day offshore. With 176 square feet set in golden teak, the mezzanine-equipped 68’s cockpit boasts a tremendous amount of usable space while keeping all necessary connections, cabinets, storage lockers and refrigeration out of sight but easily accessible. Tackle storage is abundant, and all the necessities are within easy reach. The boat can easily switch gears from South Florida sailfishing to big blue marlin in Bermuda and never miss a beat.
The center console design of the flybridge allows for three helm chairs in a complete walkaround style, with under-storage bench seats port and starboard and a two-person jump seat forward of the helm. The massive, temperature-controlled refrigeration box in the brow has plenty of room for bait or food when traveling for extended periods. A chiller box is easily accessible by the helmsman aft of the bench seat, and the freshwater outlet on the bridge makes those end-of-the-day washdowns quick and easy. During our sea trial, I noted that vision is excellent from the helm, with no blind spots fore or aft. Working a tripleheader of sails on light tackle or backing on a blue marlin would be no problem.
The 68 follows on the heels of the company’s highly successful 72 Convertible . Viking was able to incorporate a number of the popular features of the larger boat into the 68 — including the walkaround center console flybridge helm and the tournament-tested cockpit — without compromising the interior layout, which also includes a convenient day head.
The four-stateroom/four-head layout has a full-size midship master stateroom, a VIP stateroom forward, a guest stateroom to port and crew quarters for two with discreet access. Entering the salon, the day head is immediately on the starboard side, with an L-shaped lounge to port. The well-appointed galley, with its walkaround island and raised dinette, makes onboard entertaining a breeze, while the portside companionway makes great use of the available space. The overall design is open, airy and inviting.
The layout and amenities make the 68 an excellent choice for tournaments or long-range travel, with plenty of room for privacy, onboard dinners, long runs and overnight fishing.
Engine Room
As expected, the Viking 68’s engine room is bright and well-lit, with excellent access to all maintenance points on the engines and equipment. The optional twin 1,945 hp MTU Series 2000 V12 M96L diesels are mounted directly to the hull stringers, making access to the engine beds a cinch.
The tops of the stringers are 1-inch-thick aluminum saddles that are bonded with the laminates, making it the ultimate in strength and rigidity. “This structure, including carbon fiber on the tops of the stringers, makes it stiffer — with a perfectly flat mounting area for the engines to rest on,” Gibbons explains.
Construction
The use of new materials and available technology is the latest result of Viking’s constant forward thinking, and it’s all showcased in the newest build. The company’s resin-infusion processes are continually evolving, incorporating not only end-grain balsa and composite core materials but also reinforcements such as Kevlar and carbon fiber. By utilizing these materials, Viking can build a lighter, stronger and, ultimately, faster and safer boat. Carbon fiber alone is not strong enough to tolerate the high demands of today’s sport-fishers, but as Schwab says, “By incorporating carbon fiber with materials that support it as part of the bigger laminate, we can maximize the benefits while improving overall structural integrity.”
Performance
“At 68 feet, the ride is remarkable,” says Schwab. “We have taken what we have learned from other models — the 72, the 80 and even the smaller boats like the 62 — and put them into the 68.” The efficient hull design gives the 68-footer improved lift and performance, cruising in the mid-30-knot range and topping out at 40.5 knots.”
“This boat is sharper at the bow than our previous models, which softens the ride even more, and it’s a little flatter aft, which lifts the boat,” says Gibbons. The hull design, coupled with advancements in the VIPER steering system, results in a boat that tracks true in all sea conditions, even at a svelte 115,306 displacement pounds.
Viking refuses to allow anything but the best to roll off its production line. The company takes its research and development seriously, and the result is a vessel that wows its buyers. Viking customers expect improvement year after year, and the company, which celebrated its 54th anniversary on April 1, consistently delivers. The Viking 68 is proof of its relentless pursuit to build a better boat every day.

Driven by its mantra to build a better boat every day, here comes Viking again with another example of excellence in boatbuilding design, engineering and innovation. The legendary New Jersey boatbuilder is proud to announce the all-new Viking 90 Convertible, a yacht that will redefine the capabilities of the luxury convertible sportfisher and become the new benchmark in the genre.
“We’ve taken all the incredible qualities of the 92 – the interior layout, the accommodations, the style, the amenities – and merged them with greater performance, technology and versatility,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey. “The 92 was the Bentley. This is the Ferrari.”
Three Models The 90’s profile represents a synthesis of design traits from the 92, 80 and other modern Viking sportfishing yachts, as well as subtle motor yacht influences. “We designed the 90 to be as sleek as possible, stressing a low profile and clean lines,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “We also brought several refinements to the exterior that enhance that lean, sexy look.” Carefully placed feature lines, deckhouse windows and portlights with chamfered edges and Viking’s signature hull-side vents are just of few of the 90’s aesthetic high points.
Viking will offer three models of the 90 (Open Bridge, Enclosed Bridge and Sky Bridge), all utilizing a spacious six-stateroom accommodation plan highlighted by a full-beam master suite. “We feel the open bridge 90 is going to be a huge hit, particularly with our 80 owners,” says Pat. “We’re providing a larger Viking that fishes just as well as their 80 and has the same type of performance and nimble maneuverability.”
The Open and Enclosed Bridge 90 can be outfitted with a tuna tower from Palm Beach Towers (PBT), and all three models can be equipped with a custom electronics, communications and entertainment package from Atlantic Marine Electronics (AME). Both Viking subsidiaries, AME and PBT ensure turnkey delivery.
Looking Aft The cockpit and dual mezzanine stress a sense of togetherness with a focus aft – where the action is. From the salon, a 40-inch-wide electric-powered single door opens with a touch of a button. The upper mezzanine’s port side is home to an L-shaped aft-facing lounge with available air-conditioned backrest and a teak table. On the starboard side, there’s a versatile cooking and refreshment hub (with an additional aft-facing seat) that can be personalized to the owner’s liking with a grill and icemaker or refrigerator.
A large lounge on the lower mezzanine looks upon the cockpit, with its shapely fiberglass module holding storage underneath and tackle drawers on each side. The mezzanine provides centerline engine access to the crew quarters and engineroom, and is also home to an oversized freezer (port) and two refrigerated boxes (starboard).
The cockpit measures 224 square feet, with a 203-gallon transom fishbox/live well and a pair of full-length 103-gallon insulated in-deck fishboxes. Access to the Seakeeper 35 is provided by a single powered hatch on centerline, a watertight design introduced with recent Viking 80 demonstrator boats, and the cockpit sole is built with reinforcement for a fighting chair, rocket launcher or table.
Living Large Viking owners and enthusiasts will be enamored with the accommodations of the new Viking 90. The combination of interior volume, a flowing open layout and several design nuances create a fresh soothing ambiance throughout the vast living spaces. Stepping into the salon, a new horizontal grain natural walnut interior greets you with warmth and style. Interior doors featuring both horizontal and vertical grains as well as ebony inlays add to the visual appeal. Guests will appreciate the spacious lounge that begins at the salon door and wraps around the port side. A starboard-side entertainment center features a 65-inch pop-up HD TV. Forward, the large starboard wraparound galley is open to a raised U-shaped dinette to port (with rod storage below).
The Viking 90 offers five guest staterooms, each with its own private head and shower, crew quarters with immediate access to the engine room, a pantry with an additional crew berth and a day head. Spanning the 23-foot, 2-inch beam, the owner’s suite boasts a king walkaround bed, a walk-in closet, a dressing table, a lounge area, a full-size credenza under a bulkhead-mounted 65-inch HD TV and his-and-hers private facilities with separate access.
Miami 2023 Debut “Constantly looking to the future, we embarked more than a year ago on this design,” explains Pat. “It came at a time when international regulations would be taking effect that required Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in the engine rooms of yachts with a ‘load line length’ greater than 24 meters.
“Understanding that suitable engine and SCR technology for this market was unavailable, the U.S. Coast Guard announced in March a three-year suspension of the regulations in North America. But the development of the 90, which does not require SCR, was already well underway and in 15 months we’ll proudly present the next flagship of the Viking sportfishing fleet.”
The Viking 90 will make her world premiere at the 2023 Miami Yacht Show.

The rising interior design firm behind some of latest eco-friendly superyacht refits
When turning superyacht dreams into reality, finding the right yacht designer is crucial. US-based Verge Yacht Design , founded in 2021 by principal interior designer Anita Rivera Turcotte, has quickly proven itself as a leader in the industry despite its relatively young age. The firm has already worked on an impressive array of projects, collaborating with renowned shipyards such as Feadship , Amels and Heesen , among others. Currently working on two new builds and two refits, with three additional refits scheduled for 2024-2025, Verge Yacht Design specialises in full-service superyacht interiors and personalised furnishings, all while being committed to using environmentally conscious materials in its work.
Bespoke superyacht interiors
At Verge Yacht Design, innovation is at the heart of every project. The firm collaborates closely with yacht owners and crew to create stylish and functional spaces that cater to the client’s lifestyle and taste. Verge is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional yacht design, offering creative and customised solutions that are truly one-of-a-kind. A hallmark of Verge’s approach is the incorporation of biomimicry, drawing inspiration from nature to enhance the design.
A prime example of Verge’s expertise is on board the 54.3-metre, Amels-built Revelry , which underwent an extensive eight-month refit at Thunderbolt Marine from May to December 2022. Verge Yacht Design led the complete interior transformation, which included bespoke furnishings, reupholstery, curated artwork, custom Roman sheers and blackout window shades, custom lighting and technical upgrades. The sundeck was also reimagined with an LED-backlit quartz bar top, bespoke seating, spatial reconfiguration, custom barware and a soft refit of the bridge deck and crew areas.
“Anita and the Verge team channelled their many high-end talents to produce a refitted interior beyond our owner’s dreams,” praises the captain. “From design to fit, Verge paired yacht practicality and sustainability into their aesthetic design. As with all projects, when challenges present themselves, it’s the commitment that excels a team to the finish line.”
Service that goes beyond design
Verge Yacht Design has significantly expanded its scope beyond yacht interiors to offer a full suite of services, including project management, furniture design and product engineering. The firm oversees every aspect of a project, from the initial design phase to final implementation, ensuring smooth execution through a trusted network of collaborators and vendors.
The studio’s designs are distinguished by their engineering precision. To bolster this technical expertise, Verge has been collaborating with renowned naval architect Nick Eremic on structural engineering. Eremic’s knowledge in engineering and construction ensures that superyacht concepts are both realistic and functional, while also facilitating an organised process for contractors during the build phase.
Eremic will be joining the Verge Yacht Design team on a full-time basis in September 2024. His expertise will enhance the firm’s capabilities, allowing them to offer 3D models and renderings, engineering drawings comprehensive project management services.
Leading the way in eco-friendly yacht design
Committed to staying at the forefront of eco-friendly innovation, Verge Yacht Design strives to integrate technologies and practices that minimise environmental impact into every aspect of its designs. The firm actively sources materials that reduce weight to lower emissions, as well as carbon-neutral decking and upcycled components.
A key focus for Verge is understanding the origins and production processes of the materials it uses to ensure they are environmentally certified. By selecting marine-grade materials that are reusable and biodegradable, particularly for closed-loop systems, Verge minimises environmental impact while adhering to the highest standards of sustainability.
Verge also prioritises the full lifecycle of each material, carefully evaluating its impact on the marine environment. This involves assessing energy consumption, waste production and the potential for recycling and reuse. Looking to the future, Verge considers the long-term impacts of its material choices, emphasising biodegradability, recyclability and positive end-of-life outcomes. But sustainability in yacht design at Verge extends beyond material selection. The firm also focuses on reducing its carbon footprint throughout the entire logistics and procurement process. This includes maintaining transparency in the supply chain, consolidating shipments, optimising routes, partnering with green carriers, and sourcing locally whenever possible.
Verge Yacht Design is currently developing a yacht-specific furniture line in collaboration with a luxury brand, as well as a marine fabric line, both set to launch in 2026. These exciting ventures position Verge as a brand to watch in the world of superyacht design.
