MAINTENANCE

Dragonfly 40 Touring, Ultimate, Performance (built since 2020), and all C-version (built since 2022)

To inform and illustrate recommended service, maintenance, and refitting on an older Dragonfly, we have drawn this general information sheet. Rough elements, like strong winds and wave conditions, strong saltwater and UV do have some impact on the boat after a long sailing life.

We strongly recommend servicing and changing vital parts on your boat according to our recommendations. This information overrules any other former information you may have, as the following is based on updated knowledge.

Exchange intervals of structural parts

Dragonfly 40 Touring, Ultimate, and Performance (built since 2020), and all C-versions (built since 2022)

  • Waterstays - every maximum 10 years or 25.000 NM.
  • Side stays and forestay cables in Stainless Steel – every maximum 10 years or 20.000 NM.
  • Fiber Side stay cables (DF 40C and sometimes ordered optional on other boats) to be replaced after 7 years and or max 20.000 NM.
  • Diamond stays on the mast should be changed after 15 years at the latest, or, by max 25.000 NM.
  • Beam stop cable to forward, outside beam under trampoline – every maximum 10 years.
  • Halyards and Dyneema lines need regularly visual check for wear and tear.
  • Steering cables – every maximum 7 years or 15.000 NM. Regular visual control is strongly recommended and especially before planning longer trips.

The above listing of exchange intervals is the recommendations from the Dragonfly yard, and it is not an extension of the 2-year warranty committed from when the boat was new.

From January 2024 we engrave the Dragonfly logo including a production year, on all rigging terminals on structural wiring such as waterstays, side stays and diamond cables, to make it easier for you as a customer to follow the above recommended exchange intervals.

Important: Always check very carefully that you replace cables in the same type of cable quality if not ordered/replaced by the Dragonfly Yard.

Visual check of all cables is still required before and when changing the rigging. We strongly recommend focusing on side stay cables, as these easily bend when stepping the mast. Bended side stay cables near the terminal may cause the side stay cable to break.

On all Dragonfly’s, please regularly check the forestay cable in the top by the terminal. When furling, the spinnaker or Code-0 halyard may block the forestay, which can cause failure of the forestay.

Trampolines

On all Dragonfly’s, we recommend re-stitching (sewing) along the stitching/seams of the trampolines every 6-7 years (in climates with strong UV, every 5 years). Normally, our clients change their trampolines after 10-12 years use. Please note this is an recommendation and it is still always the skippers responsibility to regularly check the condition of the trampolines.

Float deck Teflon pad rings

The white 5 mm Teflon pad rings on the float deck needs to be changed every 13-15 years – this is neither critical nor structural. For easy change of these pads/rings, you just bolt off the floats from the wings by the one bolt in each end of the Wing/beam.

Quick-Links

Over the years, Quorning Boats has used the riggings links, so-called Quick-Links, in the Dragonfly production quite often. When replacing these, it is of utmost importance to purchase links of same high quality or similar products carrying same strength (working load). Many products look the same, but do NOT carry the same strength/loads. If you are not sure about this, please contact your local dealer or the Dragonfly Yard.

The above picture shows a Quick link from Peguet that is used on all Dragonflys.

Caution for all painted surfaces on the boat and mast

Painted surfaces may not be covered with Plastic or other non-breathable materials, as water and condensation cannot be lead away from the painted surfaces, and these are not able to dry.

When water is stuck between the Paint and a non-breathable or non-ventilated material, blisters can occur between the paint and the gelcoat or the carbon sections of the mast.

Due to these circumstances, the permanent use of Ex. Matt-Fenders cannot be recommended, as water and Condensation can also get stuck between these and the hull, and lead to blisters in the Paint.

Quorning Boats cannot be held responsible for Blisters in the paint occurred due covering the painted surfaces with non-breathable materials.

Ordering Parts

Original parts can be ordered at Quorning Boats at [email protected]

Common spare parts can be shipped within two weeks, whereas special parts and/or custom-made parts usually are served within 6-8 weeks.

Parts ordered at Quorning Boats Denmark, will be produced in originally designed materials. Should you choose to order from other suppliers, please check that the same kind of materials are used – especially on the waterstays and other rigging parts, where stronger Dyeform cables are needed.

Guide to Denmark

A truly magical yachting destination

Perched in the bottleneck between the North Sea and the Baltic , as well as being situated in close proximity to Sweden and Norway , Denmark is an astonishingly rich destination for a luxury yacht charter vacation. Boasting pristine rural landscapes, culinary excellence and prime anchorages, you simply cannot miss the opportunity to voyage around this very special part of the world.

Denmark is the smallest and southernmost country of all the Scandinavian countries and holds an incredibly laid back and tranquil atmosphere. Rich in culture and history, the Nordic wonder also boasts several UNESCO World heritage sites, paired with a world-class food scene, there is alot to see and do in this wonderful country. Take time to explore the charming medieval-like towns, breathe in the clean air and explore everything that Denmark has to offer.

No visit to Denmark is complete without a stop at its capital, Copenhagen. Offering everything you could ask for from world-class shopping, outstanding cuisine and a wonderful cultural ambience, guests on a luxury superyacht charter can take in the beautiful 17th-century waterfront harbor of Nyhavn and explore the divine city from its pedestrianized center to the tranquill Tivoli Gardens.

Voted one of the happiest places to live, Denmark is home to an abundance of serene coastal hideaways and historic buildings where their beauty isn't diminished by age. Visit the Kronborg Slot, best known as the Elsinore Castle of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. A renaissance masterpiece topped by baroque green-copper spires. Another architectural sensation is the Frederiksborg Slot, a gigantic Dutch Renaissance palace that rises proudly out of the photogenic moat-lake Slotsø.

Be sure to visit the second-largest city in Denmark, Aarhus. The quaint and charming harbor town is a real highlight when visiting the Nordic country. Spend the morning wandering through the area’s delightful parks and learn more about Denmark’s past in its museums before indulging in some afternoon shopping.

Another yachting highlight is the divine Svendborg, renowned for its chain of islands connected by a bridge. Take in the breathtaking panoramic views across Tåsinge, the cruising grounds here are perfectly designed for boating, a truly tranquil escape in almost tideless waters between Sweden and the Jutland peninsula.

Nr 7. Sailing the Limfjord in Denmark

  • June 15, 2021

‘How do you plan your route while sailing?’ is a question we often get. ‘Based on the wind and the people’ is the answer. Because YOU don’t decide, NATURE decides for you. If you have strong winds coming from the west, the only way you can sail is to the North or to the South. You can go westward with your boat, turn on the engines and fight the wind, current and waves, but it will be a hard and long journey. So sailors usually have a global plan which depends on the wind direction. Which automatically means you shouldn’t be in a hurry. Hurry means forced decisions, often against ‘the will’ of nature, it will wreck your boat and all the materials on it, like the sails. And more importantly, it is a risk to you and your crew if you fight nature.

If you follow nature and it gives you opportunities to choose from to sail to, we like to follow the advice of experienced fellow-sailors and locals (also we check the internet or sailbooks that we have on board). This is how we ended up in the Limfjord. Once we sailed to the top of Denmark (Jutland) our plan was to cross the Skagerrak to sail further north. Nope. Strong winds in the wrong direction for the next week would make this a bad decision. Then someone advised us to go through the Limfjord, then you would cross the top of Denmark from west to the east coast and end up in the Kattegat. So we did. And we were happy to have done so! Because this was a great 2 weeks of visiting lovely little islands, encountering 3 dolphins, cycling to a historic Viking monument and wine and dine in the great city of Aalborg!

These are the places we would recommend in the Limfjord, from west to east:

Thyborøn: the entrance of the Limfjord on the westcoast of Denmark. It is a quite place with a few fishrestaurants. Once we sailed to the harbour of Thyborøn, we saw 3 black fins in the waves. These were of 3 dolphin! And I once learned in New-Zealand: when you see 1 dolphin, usually there are at least 5 swimming below in the water. And so it was: in this area of the Limfjord, a group of around 10 dolphins are known to visit this area a lot!

Struer: a lively popular place among sailes, with spacious harbours for yachts, with good facilities like BBQ places and restaurants. We loved the waterski area next to the harbour where we enjoyed people performing all kinds of tricks, jumping up from the ramps in the water.

Venø: a little island in front of the Struer, with a great cycle track and small fish harbours where you can also eat fresh ice-cream in the kiosks.

Ejerslev Havn: a place we ran into, nowhere mentioned in the sailguides, but it turned out to be a great spot in front of a volcanic cliff. It was an old mine and behind the cliff the mine turned into a lagoon. Also the fossil museum is worth a visit, which exihibits beautiful prints of ancient turtles and fish, preserved in stone.

Livø: on the island of Livo we met Jesper and Benji who invited us to a Viking dinner, you can read more about it in blog nr 6 !

Løgstør : this small city has an impressive Viking site, where you can learn more about the strategical position of the Limfjord as an important tradespot in the triangle of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Aalborg: after the nostalgic islands and small villages, we entered the big city of Aalborg! City nr 4 in Denmark with 117.000 habitants. A lot of young people studying there, many trendy restaurants (we had great sushi!) and modern buildings, designed by Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect behind the Sydney Opera House. Great cycling along the quays which reminded us of the Amsterdam IJ area!

Læsø: after 10 days of sailing we left the Limfjord on the east side of Denmark. Then you end up in the Kattegat. I’ve always been curious to find out about the Kattegat, the waterway between Denmark and Sweden: would it have rough waters? Would it be busy with big containerships going from Sweden to Denmark or Norway? It turned out to be very quite water, with lots of small fishing boats because of the many herrings swimming here and very surprisingly not deep at all (around 5 or 6 meters!). And in the middle of the Kattegat, we visited the island of Læsø, famous for salt extraction. We visited the plant where the salt production took place, in a beautiful landscape with lakes and houses with roofs of seaweed. We stayed at Læsø for 2 days.

Out In The Open And On The Move In Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian Forces Are Vulnerable—And Losing Lots Of Armored Vehicles

But the losses might be worth it, if Ukraine can seize and hold a big portion of Kursk.

A Ukrainian gunner with the 45th Artillery Brigade.

Eleven days in their invasion of Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian troops firmly control 200 square miles of Kursk—and contest an additional 350 square miles.

But the galloping advance has cost the Ukrainian invasion corps—made up of around a half-dozen brigades and a few independent battalions plus supporting units—a significant number of precious armored vehicles plus potentially scores of troops.

Russian forces have lost only a few vehicles but their bewildered infantry have surrendered to the attacking Ukrainians by the dozen.

The ratio of equipment losses—heavy Ukrainian write-offs compared to relatively few Russian write-offs—is unusual. On average throughout Russia’s 29-month wider war on Ukraine, the Russians have lost many more vehicles than the Ukrainians.

Whether the high losses are worth it to the general staff in Kyiv depends on the invasion’s objectives—and whether the loss ratio flips as the Kursk campaign develops.

On an average day in the 905-day wider war, the Russian military loses nearly four tanks and nearly eight infantry vehicles, according to a running tally by the analysts at Oryx. The Ukrainian military loses just one tank and three infantry vehicles on an average day.

Ukraine’s invasion of Kursk has not been average. Rolling across the border through gaps in Russian defenses on Aug. 6, Ukrainian forces restored maneuver to a war that, for many months, has been static: both sides fighting from trenches and struggling to advance more than a few hundred yards at a time.

But the Ukrainian maneuvers have exposed their tanks and infantry vehicles to Russian drones, artillery and ambushes . In the first nine days of the invasion, the Ukrainians lost four tanks and 41 infantry vehicles, according to one Oryx analyst. The losses have included a rare British-made Challenger 2 tank and several American-supplied Stryker fighting vehicles.

The attrition of infantry vehicles—including tracked fighting vehicles and wheeled personnel carriers—has been especially acute for the Ukrainian armed forces. They’re losing these valuable vehicles at almost double the normal rate. And where the average loss rate is for the entire 700-mile front of the wider war, those losses in Kursk are occurring along a 50-mile front.

The loss of so much valuable equipment may not worry Ukrainian planners—provided, of course, the strategic gains of the Kursk campaign justify the material cost.

If Jack Watling, an analyst for the Royal United Services Institute in London is correct in his assessment, Ukraine wants Kursk Oblast as a bargaining chip. As a bargaining chip, the oblast might be worth—so far—a few dozen armored vehicles.

“Politically, the purpose of the operation is to build leverage ahead of possible negotiations,” Watling wrote in The Guardian . “If Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidency in November, the threat of withdrawing military-technical assistance is likely to force Kyiv to negotiate. The Ukrainian government wants to make sure that if it has to enter that process, it has things that Russia wants to trade for concessions.”

“The Ukrainian military, therefore, must take and hold a sizeable chunk of Russian land for the duration of potential negotiations,” Watling stressed.

It’s also possible that, as the pace of Ukrainian advance inevitably slows, the loss ratio flips. “There is a limit to how far this force can push before it overextends, meaning it will need to dig in soon if the Ukrainians are to hold the ground until negotiations,” Watling explained.

“The best-case scenario for Ukraine is that its units dig in and Russia—feeling compelled to retake the ground—suffers inordinate losses in trying to push the Ukrainians back.”

In that sense, the fighting in Kursk could begin to look more like the fighting along the front line in Ukraine, where poorly-trained Russian troops suffer heavy losses trying—and usually failing—to defeat entrenched Ukrainians.

For now, however, the Ukrainians are out in the open and on the move in Kursk. That makes them vulnerable—and prone to lose many more vehicles than they normally do.
