The New Cat Class

Power catamarans have always had hardcore fans, and we could all argue for the umpteenth time about whether powercats are better than monohulls. Yawn . The truth is, there’s a relatively small but dedicated group of powercat lovers who will never agree with the monohull crowd. Trying to persuade one or the other to change their minds is akin to locking Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow in a room and saying, “Go.”

A more interesting debate is about what, in any particular catamaran’s design, triggers such dedication. I say particular because one of the great judgmental errors naysayers make is lumping all multihull boats into the same category. Nobody would say all monohulls are alike, yet powercats are often painted with an exceedingly broad brush and then dismissed or embraced on the whole.

Truth be told, whether you’re considering a 40-foot center-console cat with quadruple outboards or an 80-foot cat cruiser with the elegance of a Trumpy, the ability of a designer to take advantage of the twin-hull platform is often the key to the design’s success—or lack thereof.

“The design work on a cat is far more involved than on a monohull,” says Larry Graf, who started off his design career by creating Glacier Bay powercats and, today, designs and builds Aspen Power Catamarans. “With a monohull, you design from the centerline out, then mirror it on the computer and pow —you have a full hull. A typical monohull hull can be done in three to five days. But for a cat, the best shapes are often asymmetric, so each hull has two halves that are not the same.”

And the hull is just the beginning of a cat’s story. Is it easier to design an interior that fits into one hull or into two separate hulls plus a center deck level? That cats have more complexity on the inside is a no-brainer.

However, having the two separate hulls also provides advantages. One is privacy on a level that can’t be matched in any monohull, if a cat’s designer works with the shape of the boat.

The key to harnessing this privacy advantage is the ability to separate staterooms not just with thin bulkheads but instead with entire hulls, or at the very least with head compartments and companionways. In part, this ability contributes to the popularity of powercats in the charter market.

Lex Raas—president of charter and special initiatives at MarineMax, which launched the Aquila line for charter in 2012 with the Sino Eagle Group—says the Aquila 48 illustrates how privacy can be done right on a catamaran.

“The privacy advantage specifically is that the port hull is a full owner’s cabin,” he says. “There are no shared bulkheads. And on the starboard-side, there are two absolutely equal cabins with equal heads and showers between them. You can take two couples with you, and nobody feels that they’re getting the short end of the stick.”

The elimination of shared bulkheads increases privacy quite a bit on that Aquila, but examples become even more stark as you consider larger yachts. One of Sunreef’s newest offerings, the 80 Sunreef Power, for example, can have six staterooms—all separated by full heads or companionways, with no two staterooms sharing a common bulkhead.

The ability to have more staterooms that are more private is in large part a function of beam on a cat, designers say.

“Beam is gained for the whole length of the boat, and the cross-deck provides a huge space,” says Mathias Maurios, a naval architect at VPLP Design in Paris, a firm known for designing twin-hulled yachts. “And while, yes, the individual hulls are narrower than a single monohull body, on the whole, usable space is larger than with a monohull. The width allows for more of the valuable interior and deck space.”

Maurios points to the Lagoon Seventy 8 as an example. “The staterooms are the size of the cabins in a much larger motoryacht,” he says.

The other big advantages many cats can claim relate to seakeeping, speed and efficiency. Again, no two powercats are alike, but a close look at specific models is illuminating. As we reported in Yachting ’s review of the Lagoon Seventy 8, for example, at a 10-knot cruise, the boat has 4,000 nautical-mile transatlantic range—a boast that few engine-driven yachts of the same length overall can make. Smaller cats can also have extreme ranges for their size; consider that the Fountaine Pajot MY 44 can reportedly cruise more than 1,000 nautical miles between pit stops.

“Speed, stability and comfort are the prime words illustrating catamarans,” Maurios says, “and we’ve always believed that multihulls are ideal.”

When designed for speed instead of efficiency, cats enjoy a different sort of advantage. Consider the Freeman 42LR, a quad-engine, 62-knot center-console. That boat gets close to 1 nmpg when cruising at just under 50 knots. And because the vessel has a compression tunnel—air gets compressed between the hulls at high speed, creating a cushion that softens the blows when striking waves—it can maintain that pace in conditions that would make most monohulls rather uncomfortable, to say the least.

What about those disadvantages the cat haters often point to? The unusual handling characteristics, the need for wider slips to match wider beams, the nontraditional looks and higher initial cost—sure, there are trade-offs. Then again, every vessel has some level of compromise.

So, let the pundit debates rage on. But remember: Power catamarans are just as different and distinct from one to the next as monohulls are, and smart design is the key to harnessing the advantages of the form.

Sun Concept Launches Innovative New CAT 12.0 Solar Cruiser

Sun Concept, an innovative Portuguese builder, just launched its new CAT 12.0 solar-electric catamaran, and it has virtually unlimited range at 5 or 6 knots. At an 8-knot cruising speed, the CAT 12.0 can run a full day and end up with batteries at 40 percent capacity. It has a top speed of 14.5 knots, all operating under silent, sustainable solar and electric power.

What’s particularly unusual about this new 39-foot cat is that it’s designed to be as adaptable as possible. It comes in a Lounge model, with open decks that can hold up to 42 people, and a Cruising model, with two staterooms and a salon for a charter operation or a private owner. So far Sun Concept has sold one Lounge model for use in a marine tourism business and one Cruising model to a private owner.

The solar panels on the coachroof can store 5.8kW, generating more energy than the boat uses at 5 or 6 knots, providing its infinite range. Owners have a choice of two 30kW Torqeedo electric motors or two 50kW Torqeedo electric motors.

The new cat has a beam of 19’ 5”, which provides for a large sunbathing area on the foredeck, and an even larger aft deck, protected by the overhang from the hardtop. The decks are modular, and they can be arranged in an open mode for sightseeing, events and parties, or in a more traditional cruising setup.

The slender, lightweight hull is designed for minimal resistance; it weighs only 14,778 pounds. As a solar-electric vessel, the CAT 12.0 is silent, leaving no exhaust fumes or carbon footprint behind.

Sun Concept was started in 2015 by investors who wanted to create a leadership position in the solar-electric charter, tourism and recreational boating markets. The CAT 12.0 is their largest boat so far.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

40ft Catamaran Models Comparisons

We compare specifications, dimensions, sail area, and pricing on the most popular 40ft catamarans in 2020.

Since 2016, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, Leopard, Bali, and Nautitech all rolled out new 40 ft catamaran models in a similar price range that are innovative, spacious, well-built, and comfortable. The latest model to be added to this 40ft array in 2020 is the Bali Catspace.

Bali has done away with the Bali 4.1 model and has designed the Bali Catspace with much improved and innovative features while Lagoon updated their popular L400 and redesigned it with the mast further back to accommodate a self-tacking jib, open scoops, and updated interior. The FP Lucia 40, released in 2016, has pretty much stayed the same, as has the Leopard 40. They are both very popular and successful cats. While the Nautitech Open 40 is a nice sporty sailing cat, it has not really taken hold in the US market with the aft helm stations.

These 40ft catamaran models are affordable and easily be handled by a coupled. It also has all the amenities suitable for a cruising boat such as an ice maker, washing machine, bigger fridge/freezer capacity, and big living spaces, which is very attractive for live-aboard cruising couples.

The 40ft catamaran holds its value because it is in high demand on the used boat market. The 40ft catamaran size range just makes sense.

READER'S QUESTION ANSWERED: Andy asked: "Which Cat is the best value and what do you budget for upgrades that deliver an above average sailing and comfort experience?"

All the forward deck designs are acceptable and safe, as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years. The current trend is smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part on cruising cats. Performance cats all have nets and longer bows and are a different category to the production cruisers. Lagoon has the biggest living space, Bali has the best live-ability overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples with the semi-raised helm position but that too is a personal preference.

In terms of the extras or additional options, I normally recommend the following:

The largest engine option available – this is important for your exit strategy especially in the US market and of course it is nice to have the extra power since the modern cats have quite a lot of windage.
The best winch pack available
All the cleats offered
Mostly it is smart to take the code zero pack even if you do not order the sail immediately (Difficult and expensive to retro fit)
Folding props – I really think that if you are going to do any extended cruising the last thing you want is to be dragging fixed props
Air Conditioning if you want to have it
Generator unless you are going to go Lithium with all the inverters and electronics to replace the generator.
Solar – I normally take the factory option and then add aftermarket to increase the array
If possible cable throttles and not electronic (If you are struck by lightning at least you can still control the engines if they still run)
Electrically assisted davits at a minimum – your dinghy is your “car” so one needs to have an efficient handling system (we raise our dinghy every night for security)
Watermaker is fantastic to have. It really makes life so much easier.
Estelle will definitely opt for the washing machine – we never had one but since she’s had it onboard our Lagoon 450, she will not go without again.

HI Chrissy thank you! The performance of the boats are all very similar. They are all cruising cats, so not exactly rocket ships but totally adequate for a an average cruising couple. You could get a little more performance out of any of these boats depending on how aggressively you sail the boat and the type of sails you have. We race our boat and almost always end up in the top three boats.

The pricing for the different brands are generally in the same range since this a competitive space and the manufacturers have to make sure they are not priced out of the market. There are essentially no bad catamarans, most are all built to recognized and enforced codes such as CE so it comes down to personal preference. Some boats have Balsa cores and other have closed cell foam cores, others have large nets, some have small nets and some have no nets, all designs are acceptable as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years.The trend is to smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part. Lagoon is good bang for your buck, Bali has the best liveability and space overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples because of the helm position.

The 40 Open has the longest WL, Largest Sail Area and has the lightest displacement… indicating it ‘should’ sail better than the others. Other than the helm position, what are the other differences (drawbacks?) you have observed or can comment on (if any)? It appears to be trying to straddle the ‘performance / cruiser’ designation… would you say it is successful?

Doug, yes you are correct however it is a displacement hull, just like the other cats in this category and while it may be a little lighter and have a bigger sailplan, it sails marginally faster, so that is not too much of a factor. In general they are nice boats but the living space is small and just like the new Excess range from Lagoon, the biggest drawback of these cats in our market is the helm position. The aft helm station have just never caught on, which is the reason that Catana and Outremer also moved their helm stations to the bulkhead rather than on the sterns.

It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

Designed by the legendary Tony Smith, this is somewhat a sailing cottage. Like a land cottage, it is cozy, comfortable, and very safe. This is essentially a 35 feet catamaran that offers great value for any sailing looking for a reasonably-priced catamaran sailboat for the weekend or holiday cruising.

This boat is designed with incredibly slim hulls, which are teardrop-shaped with flat bottoms and smaller wetted surface area. The Sea Eagle FastCat 12 catamaran-style hull design.

The Sea Eagle FastCat has a catamaran-style hull with widely spaced side tubes that create lift to reduce center floor friction on the water.

High-Pressure, Reinforced, Drop-Stitch Construction

The Sea Eagle FastCat is made from a double-layer of PVC-reinforced 1000 Denier fabric that is drop-stitched together by joining the top and bottom of the floor and sides of the gunwales with tens of thousands of high-tensile strength threads.

The drop-stitch construction allows the boat to be inflated up to 15psi. This high pressure improves performance and provides remarkable stability, buoyancy, and a rigid floor stable enough to stand on.

The reinforced double-layer of protection allows the FastCat to bounce off rocks, logs, and other objects leaving the extremely durable boat unscathed.

Safety Air Chambers

With four separate air chambers, the FastCat12 adheres to the highest safety standards. In the unlikely event of a chamber failure, the boat will easily stay afloat to ensure your safety and that of any passenger.

Protective Rubbing Strake & Bumper Guard

The custom removable transom improves the storability and portability of the FastCat12 by making it lighter and allowing a smaller folded profile.

Install the transom and attach an electric motor up to a 6 hp outboard.

Up to a 6 HP gas motor can be attached to the transom of the Sea Eagle FastCat12. Pictured is a Honda 5 hp four-stroke outboard motor.

The transom provides the ability to attach an electric motor or gas motor up to 6 hp. You can reach speeds up to 16 mph with the pictured Honda 5S which is part of the Honda Motor Package.

Kingfisher 730 Powercat 2024 Review

New zealand specialist power catamaran boat maker, kingfisher, has launched a tough new fishing model called the 730 powercat.

This hardtop half cabin boat is available with an open or enclosed wheelhouse – and with a huge range of fishing features and accessories.

This terrific new sports fishing trailer boat is paired with twin Yamaha 200hp four-stroke outboards to deliver excellent performance.

Kingfisher made its way across the Tasman from New Zealand in 2023, launching at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat show with Queensland dealer, Wynnum Marine.

The first Kingfisher models in Australia were single-engine centre console cats in 4.5m, 5.1m and 5.7m lengths.

More than 12 months on, the Kingfisher brand is gaining traction as anglers and powered catamaran enthusiasts acknowledge the quality of these innovative craft.

At the 2024 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show , Wynnum Marine presented several larger Kingfisher models – including the brand new, twin-outboard 730 Powercat hardtop.

We spent some time on the water with Kingfisher’s new offshore cat, with the test rig paired with twin Yamaha 200hp extra-longshaft outboard engines.

Price and equipment

The 730 Powercat is now Kingfisher’s biggest trailerable powered catamaran, replacing the 620 series as the trailer boat flagship.

Larger, wide-beam Kingfisher cats are also available in sizes through to 14m for both recreational and custom commercial boating applications.

Remarkably, Kingfisher also has a full line-up of plate-alloy monohull boats from 4.0m to 10.0m in length – although still no access to those boats in Australia.

The Kingfisher 730 Powercat is available with or without a fully enclosed, lockable wheelhouse.

Our test boat was the open version with the helm station enclosed on three sides, complete with a view-enhancing single-piece front windscreen and sliding cabin side windows.

Package pricing for the Kingfisher 730 Powercat HT starts at $257,539 and includes dual counter-rotating Yamaha 150hp extra-longshaft outboards with digital electronic controls and electric power steering; a Yamaha CL5 engine display; Evolution 3500kg rated custom trailer with electric-hydraulic brakes; dual cranking batteries; dual house batteries; safety gear pack; and boat and trailer registrations.

Inside the boat there is plenty of factory kit as well – too much to list here, but scroll to the bottom of this review to view all of the standard inclusions.

Our test boat was set-up for display at the 2024 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. It was accordingly loaded with cool options, features and accessories.

Electronics gear included Garmin 8416xsv and 8412xsv multi-function displays with Airmar and Garmin through-hull transducers; Garmin GMR Fantom Radar with Motionscope; Garmin 215i VHF radio; Fusion RA210 Stereo with four speakers; and a ROKK wireless phone charger.

Optional fishing features included a transom live bait tank; port-side bait board with tackle drawer and fishing tools; raw water deck wash; starboard-side custom Plaztek tackle station with drawers; Plaztek tool, pole and gaff holders; Kilwell outrigger bases and poles; plumbed sub-floor kill tanks; extra rod holders; transom sink with tap and 50L freshwater tank.

Elsewhere, the test boat was optioned with an upgraded Maxwell drum winch, U-Dek flooring upgrade; metallic hull side paint upgrade; extra cleats; two windshield wipers; additional deck lights; underwater and under-gunnel lighting; electric toilet; custom port-side wheelhouse seating with dinette; transom door; Travel Buddy pie oven; Icey-Tek ice box upgrade (115L and 90L); and more.

With the above extra kit, and paired with larger Yamaha F200 four-stroke outboards, Yamaha’s full Helm Master EX navigation and joystick control system, and an upgraded GFab tri-axle aluminium braked trailer, the driveway package price rises to $376,253.

Hull and engineering

The Kingfisher 730 has a maximum length of 7.3m and an Aussie road-legal towing width of 2.49m.

The bare hull weighs about 2000kg, while the wet towing wet for the heavily optioned test boat is 3500kg when paired with the standard Evolution tandem axle trailer – but rising to about 3600kg on the premium GFab tri-axle braked alloy trailer.

Either way, the Kingfisher 730 is no light weight: you’ll need a Dodge Ram/Chevy Silverado size vehicle to haul this big rig on the highway.

Below the waterline, the Kingfisher 730 has symmetric shaped sponsons with a very fine bow entry shape.

Inner and outer chine flats run all the way aft to provide lift at speed, stability at rest.

The topsides are tall and there is a pronounced sheer to the deck-line that’s designed to keep spray at bay – and to give the boat a tough-looking stance on the water.

The 730 Powercat is made using 5mm welded plate alloy for the hull and transom, 4mm for the topsides, cabin and self-draining cockpit floor.

Design and layout.

Our Kingfisher 730 test boat had an open plan layout so that you can walk right through from the cockpit to the front cabin where there is a full width double berth.

The double berth is 1.83m long x 1.42m wide, and upholstered using a patterned (stain hiding) brown cloth material.

Beneath the berth there are storage lockers, as well as provision for the optional toilet on the starboard side.

Lack of privacy will be an issue when using the toilet, as there is no cabin bulkhead. However, I am pleased that Kingfisher has at least made a toilet available.

To use the toilet, you need to remove the starboard side berth cushion and the centre infill cushion/board.

Surprisingly, given the Kingfisher has something of a working boat vibe, there is carpet lining the cabin ceiling and surrounds – which warms up the interior.

Access to the front anchorwell (and included Maxwell drum winch) is via the exterior cabin sides, rather than through a cabin hatch.

Helm and hardtop

The helm station is nicely setup with a full width dash beneath the one-piece toughened glass windshield which provides an unrestricted view for the skipper.

The helm fascia/instrument panel is not as large as some I have seen recently, but it is big enough to flush-fit a 16-inch display – such as the Garmin 8416xsv optioned to our test boat.

A second Garmin display was bracket-mounted in the centre of the dash, above an optional Travel Buddy pie oven to port and a very handy full width welded grab rail.

The helm dash/fascia panel might be modest in size, but provision is made to comfortably fit Yamaha’s digital binnacle throttle controls, along with a Yamaha Joystick to operate the optional Helm Master EX boat control system.

Sliding side windows channel cooling air into the wheel house when required.

Overhead, beneath the hardtop, there is provision for radio head units, stereo speakers, lighting, dual full-length ceiling handrails and cockpit spreader lights out back.

The hardtop itself is sturdy and rigid. There was no movement or vibration when underway.

The hardtop is also used as a mounting base for the optional Kilwell outriggers, Garmin radar, navigation lights, radio aerials, and a nine-rod rocket launcher rod-rack.

Reconfigurable seating

The Kingfisher comes standard with box-mounted bucket helm chairs, but our test boat was optioned with a Plaztek tackle station behind the starboard side helm chair/storage box, and a clever seat/dinette arrangement for the crew opposite.

With removable and repositionable backrests, the port side seating layout can be configured as a chaise-style lounge, a two-person dinette with adjustable height table – or as a pair of forward- or aft-facing single seats with backrests.

Both port and starboard side seat boxes allowed for the fitment of the upgraded, split-lid Icey-Tek ice boxes – which slide out into the cockpit.

Fishing cockpit

The large, U-Dek surfaced self-draining cockpit stretches 1.95m aft of the helm seats back to a full height transom wall.

The cockpit is flanked by 2.35m-wide side coamings and a two-tier side-storage pocket setup that extends the length of the cockpit.

The lower side pockets are comfortably above the floor (to provide toe/foot support underneath) and incorporate a horizontal rod storage rack.

Two large, sub-floor kill tanks provide more storage, and/or space to ice-down the day’s catch.

Other features/options included a Plaztek bait board with drawers, starboard-side sink with faucet and freshwater tank, multiple welded rod holders and cup holders, a casting/swim cage out back, elevated transom battery/storage compartments, and a live bait tank built into the centre transom boarding step/walkway.

The bait tank is sufficient in size and shape, but it did have a rigging tube running across the top of it – which may cause bruising/irritation to live baits.

On the water

The Kingfisher 730HT is a fun, fast offshore fishing boat – especially when paired with the twin 200hp Yamaha extra-longshaft outboards.

We clocked a top speed of 43.8 knots with two adults onboard and with full fuel and water.

More significantly perhaps, the Kingfisher is quick offshore – in the sense that the very smooth, cushioned ride and balanced handling allows for a high cruise speed in mild to moderate conditions.

The 730HT is also very solid, stable – and drier than many other cats I have tested in the 6.5-8.0m size range.

Like most cats, the Kingfisher runs best with the engines trimmed out/up to allow air flow into the tunnel to generate lift.

That said, the big cat is responsive to power trim so you can lift or lower the nose easily to suit the sea conditions.

At displacement speeds, the Kingfisher sits solid and secure in the water. However, this model does not have a tunnel “wave-breaker” fairing/pod so there is some tunnel wave slap when slow trolling directly into a headsea.

Overall, the Kingfisher 730 delivers the goods with regard to handling, ride and performance.

I’d happily run this boat to the wide offshore canyon fishing grounds, safe in the knowledge that it’s capable of dealing with the rough stuff and getting me home safely.

The Kingfisher 730 Hardtop is an excellent powered catamaran, and a superb fishing trailer boat.

It’s not cheap with all the optional gear and equipment fitted, but as tested the Kingfisher is ready to go offshore to do battle with everything from mackerel to marlin.

Would I have one? In a heartbeat.
