Yacht Ownership

The Lurssen shipyard is a family business in the 4th generation. Since more than 125 years more than 3000 boats, ships and yachts have been built. This experience in shipbuilding creates the basis for their success of today, which is reflected by its current positive order book. The shipyard is divided into three business fields. The first one is the building of naval vessels and special ships, like fast patrol boats, corvettes, support vessels, etc. The second area is the building of luxury super yachts starting from 40m to well over 150m, realizing nearly every design beyond any imagination. The third field is called Lurssen Logistic and concentrates on all logistical parts of the group, e.g. repair and maintenance, yacht management, spare part documentation, crew training centre and training simulators. Lurssen has earned its reputation world-wide for its high-class tailor-made super yachts. The combination of constant innovation over the last 125 years, the high quality of the work, the dedicated work force, its discretion, and especially the close interaction with the client are highly valued by its customers. To realize the special demands of their clients, the shipyard works together with cutting-edge designers from all over the world. They co-operate with Lurssen’s own staff of more than one hundred naval architects and engineers in order to seek creative options and design solutions with regard to the highest quality and highest technical standards. The high technical achievement can be constantly maintained because of Lurssens long-term experience in developing and building naval vessels, special ships and fast patrol boats. The yard is able to fulfill almost any requirements the client may have. In addition to the new construction of yachts Lurssen is a reliable partner for refit and repair. They service existing vessels with superior repair and maintenance capabilities. For vessels in remote locations a specially trained mobile service group can effect a Lurssen quality technical repair anywhere. From major renovations to onsite restorations to year-round services which keep a vessel operating at its best, Lurssen’s team of experts are at the ready for its clients.

For four generations and since 1875, German shipyard Lürssen has been cultivating the most refined skills and advanced technologies to create truly outstanding vessels. When the company founder Friedrich Lürssen said, 'Leading in quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation,' he was expressing the values the shipbuilding family of Lürssen upholds to this day.

From then to now, around 13,000 vessels have left Lürssen's docks, each one a true original and a magnificent specimen of its type. These include the world's first boat propelled by an internal combustion engine (1.5hp), launched in 1886, and the world's largest motor yacht at 180m, powered by 94,000hp.

The yachts developed by Lürssen hand in hand with clients, the world’s finest yacht designers and technical advisors span the full spectrum – graceful, bold, poetic, imposing, classic, innovative. Yet as diverse as these individual projects are, they all share one quality: they are shaped by the Lürssen family’s deep knowledge of - and commitment to - custom yacht building.

Best Lurssen Yachts for Sale

lurssen yacht builders

One of the premier shipyards in Europe, Lürssen is a trusted name in yacht building. The brand is renowned for its  new construction yachts  that are as beautiful as they are powerful, functional and innovative. Since 1875, the Lürssen family has dedicated itself to building the most impressive vessels on the water. The philosophy born more than a century ago that yachts from Lürssen would be both of the highest quality and the best performance lives on today. The firm’s deep-rooted connection to shipbuilding and German seafaring excellence is evident in every hull launched by the renowned builder. All Lürssen yachts are custom built to owners’ specifications with an uncompromising dedication to quality and style. Lürssen builds yachts from 164 feet (50m) in length to larger than 590 feet (180m). Lürssen’s advanced craftspeople, technicians, naval architects and specialized engineers collaborate flexibly with one another and yacht owners to create bold, poetic works of art.

Lurssen Yachts Heritage

Lürssen was founded in 1875 by Friedrich Lürssen who trained as a boatbuilder to work alongside his father in the boatyard. His father encouraged Friedrich to open his own yard and on June 27, Friedrich opened the doors to his boatbuilding workshop in Aumund, near Bremen, Germany. The first yacht built by Lürssen boasted both quality and originality; these two traits have become hallmarks of the Lürssen brand.

The Lürssen moniker originally built racing rowboats for Bremen oarsmen, but as time passed, the word about the impressive quality of Lürssen’s builds spread. Orders began coming in from all over Germany as the builder acquired a reputation for boats that were built to the highest possible standards with outstanding craftsmanship.lurssen yacht project at dock outside lurssen shipyard in germany

In 1886 Lürssen then changed the game by building the world’s first motorboat. A special commission by Gottlieb Daimler, an inventor and engine manufacturer who wanted to test his engines on the water, the 19-foot (6m) REMS was built and thus a new legacy for Lürssen was born.

As the demand for Lürssen-built crafts grew, the yard needed to expand. By the turn of the 20th century, the Lürssen yard was able to access open water directly thanks to the yards new site in Bremen-Vegesack. Another early 20th-century feat was the launch of Lürssen’s DONNERWETTER racing speedboat that was able to reach up to 35 knots courtesy of its 40hp engine. It was at this same time that Friedrich Lürssen’s son Otto joined the family business. He came to the firm with a shipbuilding engineering background, a high level of craftsmanship and new technical expertise. Otto was dedicated to improving methods to elevate the brand’s quality of craft further. This spirit of innovation and emphasis on quality remains today.

Throughout the proceeding 50 years, Lürssen enjoyed continued successes. The LÜRSSEN-DAIMLER became a racing champion, the OHEKA II set new standards of speed; with her the Maybach engines that allowed her to achieve a top speed of 34 knots, she became the world’s fastest commuter yacht and the 118-foot (36m) AAR IV was the world’s longest motor yacht. During this time, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and sadly said goodbye to Otto, but his wife Frieda took the helm of the company, continuing its success. Eventually, Otto’s and Frieda’s sons Gert and Fritz-Otto came aboard and delivered the impressive 180-foot (55m) PEGASUS II.

In 1971 Lürssen again changed the game with the CARINTHIA VI. A 232-foot (71m) luxury yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg — his first major yacht project — the CARINTHIA VI raised the bar for modern styling and created a signature look that can still be seen in the Lürssen yachts of today.

Lürssen continues to build the world’s most advanced and stylish luxury yachts

The Lurssen Mega Yacht Fleet

In the 1980s the fourth generation of Lürssens, Friedrich and Peter, joined the company, continuing the strong family heritage. The firm also moved its production to Lemwerder. Lürssen then took over Kröger Werft, which had docks on the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg. This allowed the firm to specialize in building yachts between 197 feet (60m) and 360 feet (110m) and begin refit and conversion work. The Lürssen yards were operating at 90 percent capacity with navy contracts and so the firm decided to split production between yacht and navy building.

By the 1990s Lürssen yachts were renowned around the world as the top-tier of luxury. The brand delivered the 318-foot (97m) megayacht LIMITLESS, designed by Jon Bannenberg, in 1997. The 2000s meant more yard acquisitions for Lürssen as it purchased the Neue Jadewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven on the German North Sea where the brand could work on repairs and conversions of vessels up to 492 feet (150m) long. The Lürssen name has attracted the world’s top yacht designers for decades. In 2012, two of these renowned designers, Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale, styled the interior and exterior of 483-foot (147.25m) yacht TOPAZ. That same year the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg was acquired by the Lürssen Group and in 2013 the Peene Werft shipyard in Wolgast, Germany, also joined the firm. Throughout this time, the brand continued to build and deliver the world’s most impressive yachts. In 2013, Lürssen delivered the 592-foot (180.65m) AZZAM, which was at the time the world’s largest yacht. She also reached incredible speeds of 30 knots — a true feat for her size. The build took only three years, which set another impressive bar for the builder. Two-thousand-sixteen saw another impressive delivery: DILBAR, a 512-foot (156m) luxury superyacht was the largest yacht in terms of gross tonnage. At 15,917-tons, she offered a level of amenities never before seen on a yacht. She boasted the most state-of-the-art technology and was delivered in just 52 months.

Building a Lurssen Yacht

Lürssen continues to build the world’s most advanced and stylish luxury yachts. Its impressive heritage and dedication are second to none.

“Lürssen yachts truly are some of the most impressive built. I thoroughly enjoy working with clients to build Lürssen new construction yachts,” says  Northrop & Johnson  Sales Broker Joe Foggia. “The build process with the shipyard is incredibly enjoyable and clients are always blown away with the quality of service and the quality of their yachts.”

Lürssen offers yacht management and refit and repair services in addition to its build services. Lürssen promises service anytime, anywhere and not only provides comprehensive scheduled or unscheduled onsite support to replace worn or damaged components of its yachts. Lürssen also provides a range of crew training courses. The brand also takes optimum care of the representatives, design teams and crew during projects, ensuring they have a comfortable and enjoyable time throughout the build or refit process. Lurssen is Environmentally Conscious

The Lürssen family has a deep respect for the sea and consistently applies environmentally friendly tactics to its yacht-building process. Its superyachts have greater fuel efficiency and decreased soot, CO2 and noise emissions. Lürssen also is the first yacht builder to make extensive use of engine and generator waste heat to operate the ship’s onboard desalination drinking water system. The brand continues to invest in research and development that promote sustainability and energy technologies such as hybrids and fuel cells. Lürssen is proud to contribute to the Blue Marine Foundation, a marine biodiversity conservation organization.

“Lürssen yachts for charter are some of the most sought-after on the charter market,” says Northrop & Johnson charter broker Fiona Maureso .  “This is because of the quality of the yachts and the amenities available on board. Lürssen yachts are state-of-the-art, but they also are timeless. Clients understand the level of excellence they will receive when they step aboard a Lürssen superyacht. This level of superiority is something clients have come to expect of charter yachts from the brand.”

Lürssen is proud to have built some of the most impressive yachts in the world. Some of these include the 403-foot (123m) AL LUSAIL, the 508-foot (155m) AL SAID, the 456-foot (139m) AL SALAMAH, the 592-foot (180m) AZZAM, the 511-foot (156m) DILBAR, the 403-foot (123m) GOLDEN ODYESSY, the 454-foot (138m) RISING SUN and the 483-foot (147m) TOPAZ to name a few. Lürssen also is extremely proud of the yachts in its 50-to-90-meter range; which represent the brand’s core business. The 196-foot (60m) OASIS, 206-foot (63m) POLAR STAR, 278-foot (85m) SOLANDGE and the 311-foot (95m) KISMET are examples of yachts in this incredible range and are not only impressively built and beautiful, but also renowned as some of the most prominent in the global fleet.

Lürssen is a family-owned yacht builder, deeply steeped in tradition with its foot firmly planted in the future. For more information on Lürssen yachts for sale, a new build Lürssen, or to charter a Lürssen , contact your preferred  Northrop & Johnson  broker.

Full Custom Lurssen Yachts - Built to order

Lurssen

Yachts from the Lurssen fleet can be described in two ways - big and highly bespoke. With a complete focus on custom builds, no two Lurssens are the same, but as the world's leading name in 60m to 100-plus construction, you can be pretty sure that any vessel baring this German yard's name will be of a mightily impressive size and scale.

Full custom builds can deliver some very different yachts. Take two of its most notable builds, the world's current longest yacht, the 180m AZZAM and the largest by GRT, the 156m 15,917 Tonnes DILBAR, the only thing these two yachts have in common is their positions in the record books. But some similarities are welcome, such as meticulous construction, ocean-going performance, peerless finish and the ability to deliver whatever its clients request are all constants.

Full custom builds require incredible in-house expertise, with huge investments in R&D, an enormous skilled workforce and a formidable array of technical abilities. They also require a talented build team. For many Owners, the build and the team is one of the most rewarding parts of the yachting experience and the reason why they return for new yachts.

Away for the build itself, Lürssen's custom culture, constantly creating new designs and styles from the keel up, means it is often at the leading edge of superyacht innovation and technology.

Lurssen Yachts

The German yacht builder Lürssen has earned a leading international reputation as the specialist for exclusive, bespoke yachts of outstanding craftsmanship and engineering mastery - ranging in size from 60m to over 180m.

The development of sustainable technologies and innovations in yacht building are firmly anchored in Lürssen's DNA. The latest generation of Lürssen superyachts boasts improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions as well as a reduction in noise levels. Lürssen is particularly driving the research and development of fuel cells powered by methanol.

With a workforce of 1800, Lürssen maintains three state-of-the-art production facilities in northern Germany. Lürssen also offers unique facilities and unrivalled potential to carry out multiple refits simultaneously - whether it is a Lürssen yacht or one built by another shipyard. Their connection to shipbuilding is as deep-rooted and individual as only family bonds can be, the commitment is deep, the approach individual.

The family-owned company was founded in 1875 and remains solely in the hands of the fourth generation. Friedrich Lürssen started the company and built the very first motor boat, REMS, with Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. When the company founder Friedrich Lürssen said: “Leading in quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation,” he was expressing the values that Lürssen upholds to this day.

Notable Yachts

Lürssen has launched some of the world’s most iconic yachts, measuring between 33 and 200 metres. Some of its world-famous launches include Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s 127-metre superyacht Octopus in 2003 and Rising Sun , 138 metres in length, delivered to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison in 2004 and now owned by David Geffen.

In 2013, Lürssen launched Azzam , which at 180 metres is currently the world’s largest superyacht. Her exterior styling is by Nauta Yachts, and her interior décor is credited to Christophe Leoni.

Manufacture

Welcome to a voyage of discovery like no other

lurssen yacht builders

From inspiration to maiden voyage

Custom-building a modern luxury motor yacht is a process of milestones or, more aptly, a voyage of many discoveries. Each step is an exhilarating achievement, a source of great joy for the owner and professional pride for Lürssen’s engineers and technicians. It all begins with an inspiration, your vision of a yacht as individual as your personality. There are no limits during this initial, creative phase: all thoughts and wishes are welcome. The design team and Lürssen’s experts will work with you to give form to your dream, visualized in 3D renderings. Although many aspects remain open to revision in later project phases, final approval of the design means physical work on the vessel itself can begin.

lurssen yacht builders

The first cut

The first tangible step in the shipbuilding process, the first steel cut, is an occasion of great excitement accompanied by ceremony. The joyful event takes place directly in our own facilities, usually before the eyes of the owner and project team. Here, a small shape is cut out of the steel sheet. This piece often becomes an adornment of the yacht or an owner’s keepsake. From this point on, the exterior design of your yacht takes shape on a step-by-step basis.

lurssen yacht builders

Good luck coins

Now that steel-cutting is underway, the ship’s keel – the backbone of the structure – must be laid to begin construction of the hull. In a tradition dating back to the early days of shipbuilding, a ceremony takes place to mark the laying of the keel. But before keel laying, part of the ritual is to place one or two coins under the keel block. There they remain until the vessel is ready to leave the dry dock. The coins, which according to maritime lore bring good fortune to the ship, are often later welded to the hull.

lurssen yacht builders

Keel laying ceremony

This step is one of the most a momentous milestones in the shipbuilding process. Although in modern shipbuilding the keel is generally no longer laid as a single beam, but rather in segments, watching as the first module of the ship’s hull is lowered onto the keel block is truly breathtaking – even for seasoned shipbuilders and yachtsmen. The ceremony is usually attended by the owner.

Construction continues

The manufacture of a Lürssen luxury motor yacht or megayacht involves literally hundreds of highly skilled and qualified technicians and engineers, each specialized in different trades and disciplines. These including welding and other forms of metalworking, electrical engineering, woodwork and a wide spectrum of painting and finishing methods. Using the block construction process, entire multideck segments of the hull and superstructure are built and outfitted with preinstalled technology such as piping, electrical cables and other components, before assembly at the building dock. Throughout the multiyear process, the Lürssen project team works closely with the owner’s representatives. The video below offers a fascinating glimpse, showing the construction of the 156-meter, 15,917-ton megayacht Dilbar – the world’s largest-ever private motor yacht.

Launching – The yacht enters her true element

Whether launched down the slipway or by flooding the dock, as is the case with the larger Lürssen superyachts, the vessel’s first encounter with water is a highly exciting and emotionally charged milestone. To see a custom-built luxury motor yacht, the product of years of planning and intensive work, float freely in her element for the first time is one of the true joys shared by yacht owners and yachtbuilders alike. Depending on the owner’s wishes, the naming may take place at this point or on final delivery. Christenings are carried out with varying levels of ceremony, in some cases focusing on the naming of the vessel, in others including blessings bestowed by a representative of the owner’s religion. In all cases, it is an unforgettable moment. The film below offers some impressions of recent Lürssen superyacht launches.

Launching – Unforgettable moments

Following the launch, the yacht’s interior furnishings and other final touches are completed. During this intermediate period, the sea trial takes place with officials from the applicable maritime classification society as well as the owner’s representatives on board. Before final approval can be given, the authorities carry out the Sea Acceptance Test (SAT) including parameters such as high- and top-speed performance, dynamic position, navigation, noise and vibrations, lifeboat deployment, stabilizers, temperatures and anchor function.

Delivery – Time for the maiden voyage

This is the moment every yacht owner dreams of, when you take possession and can embark on the maiden voyage. From this day on, the yacht becomes your personalized home at sea, your luxury villa anywhere, anytime. A unique oasis for you, your family, friends and guests. Many owners value the pleasure and convenience of always having their favourite comforts with them while travelling: a private chef, special bed linen or certain works of art. Whatever preferences you have, you can look forward to an entirely new dimension of luxury travel, adventure and the sheer, incomparable joy of life at sea.
