Jim Smith 105 – Boat Review

Jim Smith 105 Full Boat Test

Also, check out the build of the Jim Smith 60-foot Walkaround .

The latest masterwork by Jim Smith Tournament Boats of Stuart, Florida, Marlena is a 105-footer designed and built for Sam Gershowitz, owner of Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, New York. This version is actually the second one he commissioned from the builder in recent years; the day he took delivery of his 95-footer, he started the wheels rolling on the design of the 105.

“This is somewhere between my 40th and 50th boat,” Gershowitz told me as we sat in the spacious salon of the 105. “I love being a part of the project, and everything that goes into creating a magnificent boat, as much as I do the finished product,” he said. Both he and his wife were intimately involved throughout the build, taking the lead on the interior design and furnishings, which are warm and welcoming while at the same time artistic and opulent. Even the head outside on the mezzanine features a hand-painted, glazed sink with a fish motif.

“I’ve loved fishing and fishing boats since I was a kid, but I wanted this one to be a yacht first and a fish boat second,” Gershowitz said. “Working with John Vance at Jim Smith on both boats was a wonderfully gratifying experience.” Although his boat is a yacht first, when asked how you’d fish on a 105-footer, Gershowitz just smiled and said, “Very comfortably.”

General Appearance

When I think of a Jim Smith creation, the first thing that comes to mind is that signature long, lean look with the house set well back from the bow. Not so with Marlena . Gershowitz wanted maximum room for the salon, dining area and galley, so the house dimensions were greatly expanded forward. The look remains aesthetically pleasing, and actually balances well with the massive enclosed bridge and open sky lounge on the top deck. The increase in interior space it provides is almost overwhelming as you enter from the cockpit, and there is still plenty of room for the 18-foot Egret flats boat and davit perched on the bow. The striking yellow hull is set off from the gleaming white abovedecks by a teak toe rail. The rich look of the cockpit’s teak covering boards and decks plays second fiddle to the teak cabinetry and trim on the mezzanine. What appears to be a cabinet opens to reveal a stairway to the pump and engine rooms, and a beautiful curved cherry door opens to reveal the cockpit head.

Jim Smith 105 Full Boat Test

Passing through the salon door, you have to stop yourself for a second to take it all in. The cabinetry throughout the boat is cherry, painstakingly stained and varnished, and balanced by countertops of matching granite with soft, mitered edges and subtle highlights. Against the bulkhead to starboard is a U-shaped bar with glass-front cabinets with Lexan shelves cut to fit each piece of fine crystal. Most of the drawers and cabinets throughout the boat feature custom interiors to exactly fit whatever the owner intended to keep in them, whether it’s dinnerware for the dining area or a complete set of tools in the custom cherry tool cabinet on the crew deck.

Gershowitz’s recliner sits to port with an end table and reading lamp. An oversize L-shaped settee extends forward, ending at a cabinet that acts as a divider for the dining area. Opposite the settee is a smaller table with four chairs and an artisan-built curved staircase with fluted columns, round finials, cast-metal balusters and gracefully flowing railings.

A half-step up and you’re in the dining area, a spacious room with a table that seats eight, and has overhead lighting, wine racks, and a serving station. Farther forward is a large galley with refrigerator/freezer space in a full-size side-by-side with two Sub-Zero drawers. Raise a section of the granite counter, and a multiburner stove appears. The oven is hidden in the center island, and a breakfast alcove that seats six finishes the luxurious culinary accommodations.

Stateroom Deck

On the far starboard side of the galley area is a stairway that curves around to a tiled foyer. Behind the first door to your left lies the enormous master stateroom, with his and hers heads that sport a single oversize bath between them. Farther forward are four additional staterooms, each with a private head and shower, which brings to six the number of heads on this deck. Aft of the master and guest quarters and forward of the engine room are the crew quarters, which include two staterooms with bunks, and a complete shower and head for the captain and two mates.

Engine Room

The engine room houses a pair of MTU 2000 Series common rail diesels, each producing 2,600 horsepower -routed through ZF transmissions. For a vessel with 180,000 pounds displacement — up to 200,000 for longer voyages — that might seem slightly underpowered, but the hull is surprisingly efficient, with the vessel making 30 knots at cruise and 38 knots at wide-open throttle. An Alpha Laval fuel-polishing centrifuge is tucked away in a corner, along with an onboard oil-changing system with a 55-gallon spare lube-storage tank in the pump-room deck. The engines drive a hydraulic pump system that powers the anchor windlass and Wesmar 16-inch 50 hp bow thruster. In addition to seven bilge pumps, an emergency water-evacuation system is also driven off the engines. An 1,800-gallon-per-day FCI freshwater maker also resides here, and includes a digital remote control.

The pump room sits aft of the engine room, and features a SeaKeeper roll stabilizer, two 10-ton air-conditioning units, two 33 kW Onan generators, two 1,000 CFM engine-room blower systems, and additional pumps, all with backups. A stairway on the starboard side leads through what appears to be a cabinet on the mezzanine level and out into the cockpit with rod storage along the companionway.

Jim Smith 105 Full Boat Test

The enclosed flybridge measures an incredible 30.5-feet-by-18.5-feet, and includes a second salon with another L-shaped settee, a coffee table, two upholstered chairs with footrests, an end table, and a reading lamp. A classic wood chess table and chairs are tucked into the aft-starboard corner of the space, and a large cabinet with a freezer, refrigerator and storage for refreshments and glasses rests under a granite top. A large flat-screen TV rises out of the cabinet.

The helm area is a captain’s dream, with a Stidd Admiral Helm chair providing a perfect view of the glass bridge. The bridge features four KEP Marine LCD monitors running the latest Furuno NavNet 3-D software, a backup Garmin chart plotter, FLIR, various communications devices, and a computer system with printer/drawer under the custom cherry seating areas. Tables flank the helm on either side. A 12-foot table fits into a rack beneath the settee, which replaces the 11-hole rocket launcher in the cockpit for outdoor entertaining. The table and launcher are both creations of Bluewater Chairs of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Located atop the flybridge, the -skybridge features couches where a dozen guests can sunbathe while enjoying refreshments from the drink box and sink. Under the beautifully molded sky top is an open-air helm station, complete with electronics, controls and two Bluewater helmsman chairs. Mounted on the skytop is a LOPO stacked -masthead with anchor lights, FLIR, Furuno 6-foot radome, KVH TracPhone, and TracVision domes and spotlights. The navigational, fishing and communications electronics were installed by IMS American of Stuart, Florida.

They just don’t come any bigger! Nowhere is Marlena ‘s 25-foot beam more evident than in the cockpit. Any of the three fish boxes can hold a small orchestra, and the transom livewell features a glass view plate for an aquariumlike appearance. Under the port and starboard gunwales you’ll find drop-down doors that hide a full selection of gaffs and cleaning equipment when wash time comes. Three custom freezer/refrigerators are located under the mezzanine deck along with an icebox fed by a below-deck ice maker.

Performance

Marlena ‘s new captain, Mel Matherne, made quick work of dockside maneuvers using the wing stations on either side of the flybridge aft bulkhead. They provide clear views of both sides of the vessel for tight quarters. After pulling away from the slip at Star Island Yacht Club, we exited Lake Montauk and headed toward the open -Atlantic. As the boat powered up, it seemed to respond slowly to the throttles, until I looked down at the GPS and realized we were making 28 knots! The big MTUs are remarkably quiet, owing to the underwater exhaust system and an intricate complex of sound deadening materials and engine isolators. The quietness, combined with the sheer size of the vessel, masks the perception of speed. That kind of performance and fuel economy for a vessel of this magnitude is a testament to the engineers and builders. With the throttles pushed to 2,470 rpm, Marlena slipped through the 2- to 4-foot sea at an impressive 38 knots, burning 220 gph.

One could easily fill many more pages with pictures and comments, and still not capture the full flavor and atmosphere of Marlena . It is as Gershowitz desired it to be: a yacht of impeccable design and construction that also happens to be a fishing boat.

Yacht Catches Fire, Sinks at Wildwood Marina; No Injuries Reported

Fire truck enroute to call.

WILDWOOD, NJ — A 42-foot yacht caught fire and sank on Thursday afternoon while moored at the fuel dock of Schooner Island Marina, according to the City of Wildwood Fire Department. The vessel was fully engulfed in flames before 1 p.m., prompting a significant emergency response.

Firefighters from Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Erma initially responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the severity of the fire led to an upgrade to a full first alarm assignment, which brought in off-duty firefighters and additional resources from Wildwood Crest, Rio Grande, and Stone Harbor fire companies. Fire boats from North Wildwood and Stone Harbor also assisted in battling the blaze.

The fire happened just feet away from the marina fuel pumps.

The firefighters launched an “aggressive attack” on the fire, which had spread to the dock and a nearby shed. Despite their efforts, the yacht eventually sank due to the large volume of water used to extinguish the flames. A subsequent fuel fire ignited on the water’s surface but was quickly contained using foam. The fire was declared under control within approximately 40 minutes.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Due to the severity of his injuries, homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100 or anonymously through Metro Crime Stoppers.

Sykesville Veteran Wins Trip to 2026 Winter Olympics

SYKESVILLE, MD — Navy veteran Julian Osborne, a resident of Sykesville, has won a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, courtesy of the Maryland Lottery’s Mega Millions Team USA second-chance promotion.

Osborne, 71, spent over 24 years serving on U.S. Navy fast-attack submarines, traveling the world beneath the seas. Now, he’s set to embark on a new adventure, this time above ground, where he hopes to witness ski jump events and other Olympic spectacles.

Retired from active duty, Osborne continues his service as a transportation supervisor at the U.S. Naval Academy. His winning entry was selected from nearly 80,000 eligible entries in the promotion, and he’s excited to experience the Olympics firsthand after years of watching them on television.

Osborne is now facing the delightful challenge of choosing who will accompany him on this VIP trip. The promotion also awarded deluxe trips to Cheryl Harrow of Baltimore and Lisa Keeney of Adamstown, Maryland.

Maryland Lottery Big Spin Winners Score $150K and $125K

BALTIMORE, MD — Two Maryland Lottery players from District Heights and Baltimore took home big prizes on August 21 after winning on THE BIG SPIN scratch-off game.

A District Heights resident, known by the nickname “Jefe,” won $150,000 after spinning the prize wheel at the Maryland Lottery headquarters. Jefe, introduced to the lottery by her boyfriend, plans to use her winnings to expand her catering business. The winning ticket was purchased at Galaxy Food Market in Suitland, earning the store a $1,000 bonus.

In Baltimore, a lifelong resident nicknamed “The Milkman” hit a $125,000 prize. The Milkman, a retired state employee and Army veteran, has been on a lucky streak this year, previously winning $10,000 on another scratch-off. He plans to use his latest winnings to help his family and to create a man cave filled with Ravens memorabilia. The winning ticket was bought at Check Cash Depot in Brooklyn Park, which also received a $1,000 bonus.

Both winners spun a 6-foot-tall prize wheel, part of the unique game-within-a-game feature of THE BIG SPIN. With only two wheel spin prizes remaining, Maryland Lottery fans are eagerly eyeing the remaining opportunities to win big.

Explosion of a luxury yacht at the New Jersey Marina during refueling

Osama Ali

ALBAWABA - At Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood, New Jersey, a 12-meter luxury boat blew up during refueling. The explosion caused a large fire that burned for forty minutes and created a great deal of terror.

Explosion near Jewish temple in Southern France injures police officer

Witnesses compared the dramatic event to something they had seen in a movie. Initial sources speculate that the explosion could have been caused by gasoline fumes.

The boat was being refueled when it abruptly burst and swiftly caught fire. The event happened at around 12:40 PM local time. One person on board had to plunge into the ocean to escape the fierce fire that caused havoc at the port. Luckily, no major injuries were sustained, but the about 12-meter-long boat was totally wrecked and subsequently sunk.

According to witnesses at the site, the explosion occurred when the boat was getting gasoline. Even though neighbors used fire extinguishers to put out the fire right away, the fire spread too swiftly to be contained. When firefighters got there, the boat was too damaged to be saved.

After around forty minutes, the fire was eventually contained, although dense clouds of black smoke lingered in the sky for hours. From a distance, beachgoers could see the smoke, and some took pictures of the spectacle. Paul Daiber, who has lived at the marina for 25 years and keeps his boat there, said the scene was "like something out of a movie." The explosion's impact scattered the yacht's debris onto neighboring piers.

Many at the marina have expressed serious concerns about the occurrence, with many believing that gasoline fumes caused the explosion. However, the precise cause has not yet been determined and an official inquiry is still under progress.

SMOKE plumes filled the air after a yacht shockingly exploded at a packed marina.

The severely damaged yacht was being refueled at Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood, New Jersey when the fire broke out on Thursday, August 22.

A 40-foot yacht exploded and was engulfed in flames at a packed New Jersey Marina

The fire was responsible for "forcing one person on board to jump to safety," local Fox affiliate WTXF-TV  reported.

There were no serious injuries, but the boat sank to the bottom of the marina, according to the outlet.

Witnesses said the fire was the result of an explosion and that the 40-foot yacht was refueling when the fire began, NJ.com reported.

Bystanders attempted to slow the flames as firefighters arrived at the scene.

Wildwood firefighters received the call at 12:40 pm and "had the fire under control" by 1:20 pm, according to WTXF-TV.

However, swirling smoke clouds remained visible around 2 pm as police and fire officials responded to the incident, per NJ.com.

Though blocks away, beachgoers could see the smoke and took pictures as it soared through the sky and was pushed by winds.

Local police at the scene said the New Jersey State Police are heading the investigation, per the publication.

Patrons watched the scene from afar as the scent of gasoline filled the air.

Witness Paul Daiber has been storing his boat at the marina for 25 years.

At the time of the fire, he was fishing at the end of the deck opposite from where the affected yacht was moored, the outlet reported.

This was the first time he saw a boat explosion at the marina.

"It's scary," he told NJ.com, describing the explosion as a powerful thud.

He said debris from the yacht was sent into the air, landing on nearby docks.

Per Daiber, bystanders rushed to find fire extinguishers.

Firefighter crews tried drenching the blaze which turned into an inferno and was visible from across the marina, he told the outlet.

"It just progressively got worse and worse until it erupted in flames," Daiber continued.

"A huge explosion. It was like something out of a movie," another witness told WTXF-TV, adding that she heard a "boom!"

She continued, "And the next thing you know, I saw the deck from the boot flying up in the air from one dock to another, and it flew over to our dock.

"Next thing you know, there's all black smoke, and next thing was flames.

"And everyone was just rushing down, trying to get hoses and fire extinguishers."

Her husband told WTXF-TV that the yacht was "too far gone" as bystanders tried to help.

JIM SMITH 105'

the marlena yacht

MARLIN MAGAZINE

By gary caputi, june 20, 2016, the latest masterwork by jim smith tournament boats of stuart, florida, marlena is a 105-footer designed and built for sam gershowitz, owner of star island yacht club in montauk, new york. this version is actually the second one he commissioned from the builder in recent years; the day he took delivery of his 95-footer, he started the wheels rolling on the design of the 105..

We lugged along at a conservative 21 knots through the darkness and pouring rain, which severely decreased visibility. When I think of a Jim Smith creation, the first thing that comes to mind is that signature long, lean look with the house set well back from the bow. Not so with Marlena. The striking yellow hull is set off from the gleaming white above decks by a teak toe rail. The rich look of the cockpit’s teak covering boards and decks plays second fiddle to the teak cabinetry and trim on the mezzanine. What appears to be a cabinet opens to reveal a stairway to the pump and engine rooms, and a beautiful curved cherry door opens to reveal the cockpit head.

the marlena yacht

A stairway on the starboard side leads through what appears to be a cabinet on the mezzanine level and out into the cockpit with rod storage along the companionway.

the marlena yacht

Nowhere is Marlena’s 25-foot beam more evident than in the cockpit.

Marlena’s new captain, Mel Matherne, made quick work of dockside maneuvers using the wing stations on either side of the flybridge aft bulkhead. One could easily fill many more pages with pictures and comments, and still not capture the full flavor and atmosphere of Marlena. It is as Gershowitz desired it to be: a yacht of impeccable design and construction that also happens to be a fishing boat.

Superyacht Marlena for sale at International Yacht Collection

Kevin Bonnie at International Yacht Collection in Monaco tells me that he's now signed a joint central agency for sale with colleague John Dane of the 43.9m sportsfishing motor yacht Marlena .

At the time of her build in 1998 by Trinity Yachts she was the largest sportsfisherman in the world and was further extended during an extensive refit in 2005. ABS classed and MCA compliant, this all-aluminium superyacht accommodates up to 11 guests in a master suite, VIP, two doubles and one twin with a Pullman berth. Twin Paxman 3500hp engines give Marlena a cruising speed of 23 knots and, currently lying in Rome, she's asking $13.5 million.

Last moments of Bayesian yacht as it’s battered by storm before sinking

Newly released CCTV footage has shown the moment the Bayesian superyacht was engulfed by a suspected waterspout.

Six passengers onboard the boat , including tech tycoon  Mike Lynch , 59, his daughter Hannah, 18, and chairman of Morgan Stanley international Jonathan Bloomer, remain missing after the yacht sank early Monday morning.

The blurry footage shows the lights of the distant boat seen from a marina as rain batters the vessel.

Follow Metro.co.uk’s live blog for latest updates on the Bayesian yacht sinking

Suddenly, the lights disappear, and the boat is no longer visible. Local Giornale Di Sicilia said: ‘In just sixty seconds – says the owner of the villa – you can see the ship disappear.

‘Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening.

‘There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time.’

CTV shows superyacht battered by storm as local says it 'vanished in 60 secs' HORRIFYING CCTV video shows the moment the Bayesian superyacht is engulfed by the storm that would sink it.

A total of 15 other passengers, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, have been rescued so far while one person, the boat’s chef, has been found dead.

Emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily  Giornale Di Sicilia  divers can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, so the searches are being carried out for 10 minutes per dive.

According to reports, Mr Lynch and the group were on holiday celebrating after Mr Lynch was acquitted of fraud in June following a high-profile court case over the company’s sale.

The Italian Coastguard believes Mike Lynch and five other missing people may still be inside the sunken yacht, a spokesman said.

Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: ‘We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

‘Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

‘Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

‘We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.’

Perched on the shores of Boka Bay, Aeris offers 22 residences over five floors. Designed by global architecture studio Woods Bagot, the building is inspired by the sea and the superyachts that grace it. The fluid wooden decking, angular balconies, and copper-colored metalwork evoke contemporary vessels, enabling yacht owners to feel connected to their passion even while on dry land.

Aeris residences range from a standard one-bedroom apartment to a glitzy four-bedroom penthouse. Each abode offers panoramic views and all the requisite mod cons. Owners can enjoy amenities like a private pool, a resident-only beach club, and a high-tech fitness center. The Aeris team will also provide personalized service, from valet parking to concierge assistance.

Aeris Residences

Adjacent to the Aeris lie the IVO Hotel and Residences . Named after Montenegrin explorer Captain Ivo Visin, the property is a five-star take on coastal living. The 25 residences, managed by the Rare Finds hotel, range from studios to three-bedroom penthouses. Owners will, of course, have access to all the hotel amenities. Aeris owners get a free run of the IVO amenities, too.

“Porto Montenegro is a year-round sanctuary where modern lifestyles blend with the grandeur of yachting, supported by a diverse community of over 40 nationalities,” Margasson adds. “Our aim is to provide residents and visitors with luxury and unique experiences that enrich their maritime lifestyle, creating a place where the spirit of adventure and the elegance of superyacht living come together.”

Porto Montenegro has already welcomed the neighborhood of South Village. Boka Place will open soon, and North Village and Park Gardens will debut after that. Stay tuned.
