To board "Velvet Moose" you step onto a full beam integral swim step that has molded non-skid surface. Built-in to the swim step is a hatch in the center to access the swim ladder; it is also designed to be deployed by a person in the water for additional safety. There is a transom door leading one-step up to a generous cockpit that has plenty of room for entertaining under the shelter of the upper deck. There is a teak table and a couple of teak deck chairs for comfortable seating in the cockpit and to port is a half spiral stair leading up to the flybridge with storage lockers underneath.

In the cockpit is a water tight Diamond Sea Glaze Dutch door leading into the main salon. To port is an L-shaped settee with a hi-lo folding teak table with ebony inlays. To starboard are two wicker chairs, a teak cabinet in between, an entertainment bar with polished granite counter and storage underneath, a Sharp Aquos 20” LCD screen for Sony DC DVD Stereo, (5) ceiling mounted speakers for your entertainment. 

The U-shaped gourmet galley is forward to port with black polished granite counters and additional cabinets and counter to starboard. The galley is fully equipped with a Force 10, 3 Burner Stove and Oven, a GE Profile Sensor Convection Microwave Oven with Vent Fan, a Broan Trash Compactor and Double Stainless-Steel Sink with Single Lever Faucet. Located forward on centerline in the galley is a full size Norcold TEK II Dual Electric Refrigerator with a separate freezer compartment above.

Just to starboard of the galley are stairs leading three steps up to the Pilothouse. The Pilothouse has a raised L-shaped settee with an ebony inlaid teak table. The visibility forward from the settee is panoramic. There is a pilot berth behind for extended passages. The dash has a 17” Big Bay Display Monitor, PC Navigation System, ICOM VHF Radio, Simrad Instruments and AutoPilot and SidePower Dual Joystick Thruster Control.

Aft to starboard are stairs leading to the flybridge. The Flybridge has a secondary control and navigation system, two helm seats  forward that has a large Lshaped dinette with a BBQ, Sink and Bar opposite for entertaining. The Novurania 11’ 2” hard bottom inflatable tender is mounted on upper deck with stainless steel chocks. The Forespar mast has an electric lift and boom hoist for launching the tender. Going back down to the pilothouse are port and starboard watertight Diamond Sea Glaze Dutch doors leading out to the Portuguese bridge deck. The 360-degree walk around covered side decks has high bulwarks and stainless steel handrails for safety at sea. The foredeck and the bow pulpit has two anchors, dual windlass, and rope in separate isolated chain lockers. There are also fresh, salt-water wash down hose bibs in the chain locker, and a secondary power connection is located on the foredeck.

From the Pilothouse on starboard are teak stairs with handrails for security on both sides leading to a landing and three staterooms. Entering the midship master is a centerline queen island berth with ensuite head to starboard. She has (2) hanging lockers, 20” Sharp TV screen, Pioneer Stereo CD/DVD, Direct TV and (2) ceiling mounted speakers. The head vanities are polished black granite with stainless steel Grohe fixtures and an under mounted porcelain sink. There are generous stall showers with seats in both the master and guest heads. Through a doorway forward from the master is a companionway leading to the two guest staterooms and guest head. To port the guest stateroom is set up with beautiful teak office and chair, a Pullman bunk berth and a hanging locker. Further forward is the VIP stateroom with an island queen berth, (2) hanging lockers, 15" Sharp TV, Pioneer Stereo CD/DVD, Direct TV and (2) ceiling mounted speakers. To starboard is the guest head and shower. Centrally located are the 220V Asko Washer in the stairwell and the Dryer is down at the foot of the stairs. The stairs lead back up to the pilothouse aft of the guest head on starboard.

When it comes to selling or buying a Selene, you need a trusted partner, and our in-house brokerage department has an extensive knowledge of all Selene Yachts built. Our expertise, combined with our database, results in easy and reliable transactions.

Every Selene yacht is unique and will attract different clients from all walks of life. Our brokerage team is perfectly aware of that fact, and are intimately familiar with each models of our Selene Yachts, simple because we have built them all from scratch; we have perfect records of all the systems installed, and we make a point to ensure to maintain contact with the boat and its owner.

Selene brokerage and its network of local correspondents will ensure that all the documentation for the yachts on sale is up to date, and once the yacht’s description and inventory have been finalized, we will advertise each yacht on our website – with an announcement in the News section, of course – and then follow up with every inquiry we receive. Once a buyer is found, Selene brokerage will act on behalf of both parties during the negotiation process, coordinate boat shows, sea trials, and surveys.

A leading world brand of luxury passage-making trawlers, Selene Yachts are designed and built in the impressive Jet Tern Marine facility along the Pearl River delta in Zhuhai, China since 1998. Jet Tern Marine was founded by Howard Chen who studied architecture under the famous Taiwanese architect, Dr. Da-Hong Wang at Tunghai University in Taiwan.

Influenced by Dr Wang’s design and name of a commemorative monument of the Apollo 11 moon landing, he called his newly developed line of Yachts, Selene (Greek mythical moon goddess). The first Selene Yacht was delivered to the US Pacific Northwest in 1999. Today there are over 400 Selenes cruising throughout the world and are highly respected for their seaworthiness, safety, and comfort.

Initially, the Jet Tern Marine/Selene shipyard was located in Dongguan, China, an area known for its high-end furniture industry, providing local sourcing for the yachts’ luxurious interiors. Highest quality materials such as woods, veneers, fabrics, granite, and glass along with skilled craftsmen were readily available and a local climate ideal for fiberglass lamination production. An in-house stainless-steel workshop was added in 2006 to fabricate equipment utilizing premium polished 316 steel, reducing production costs and for higher quality control.

Another Selene Yachts shipyard was opened in 2008, in Zhuhai on the water, near Macau. The new facility included two 150,000 sq ft work buildings equipped with a total of four 100-ton cranes, and a 32,000 sq ft warehouse making it the largest single production facility in Asia, able to accommodate 36 sets of molds for boats in production. Larger vessels were built in Zhuhai and smaller yachts in Dongguan, and together built nearly 400 yachts ranging from 38ft to 103ft in length, over a 20-year period. In 2017, the company decided to consolidate all operations to the Zhuhai shipyard, as it was a superior facility and located on the water for easier testing of new builds.

As of 2018, all Selene Yachts are built in Zhuhai. The Jet Tern Marine Zhuhai shipyard is one of the best equipped and largest facilities building FRP (fiberglass) yachts in the world, with the capacity to build nearly 100 yachts a year. Even with a high production volume, Selene Yachts remain semi-custom, hand-crafted, solid vessels, produced efficiently and priced advantageously. Selene Yachts are designed and built from start to finish in the Zhuhai factory, a “vertical” operation, and do not subcontract work to third-party facilities or so-called partner shipyards. Another Selene Yachts advantage is the 20+ year experience designing and building true ocean-going passagemaker trawlers versus recreational trawlers.

Selenes are built with stronger fuel-efficient, deep full-displacement hulls, watertight bulkheads and doors, full skeg-protected propeller and rudder, backup bilge pumps, large scuppers, continuous duty engines, and automatic engine room fire extinguisher systems, Portuguese bridge and high bulwarks, forward raked pilothouse windows for greater visibility, large storage spaces for spare parts and provisioning, escape hatches in critical locations, solid hull lamination below the waterline (no foam or core), covered aft deck, cockpit and side decks, and beautiful teak or cherrywood cabinetry—just some of the features that differentiate Selene Yachts trawlers and instill confidence in sailors to power across any ocean or sea in safety and comfort.

Understanding the dual roles of captain and engineer often required of the long-range cruising trawler owner, the Selene Yachts engine rooms have been designed to provide good access, headroom, and plenty of space around mechanical and other systems for ease of maintenance and service. First-quality brands are installed for electrical components such as batteries, generators, inverters, chargers, light fixtures and more. As a semi-custom builder, the Selene Yachts engineering team stands ready to assist owners with their yacht’s electrical system and level of redundancy required for their cruising plans, in fact, owner and designer Howard Chen, Naval Architect, personally remains involved with every new project and along with his staff, is attentive to the owner throughout the build.

Today owners can opt for a classic exterior and interior design or a new, more modern exterior and interior, (or a combination of modern and classic) designed by world-renowned Dutch superyacht designer, Guido de Groot, of the award-winning studio, Guido de Groot Design B.V. located in Leiden, Holland. De Groot specializes in high-quality, innovative designs appreciated for their purity and harmony in both power and sailing luxury superyachts. Selene Yachts offers owners the choice of either Classic or de Groot lines for the same length vessel.

In 2017 a strategic consortium was developed by Jet Tern Marine, builder of Selene Yachts, and Kingship Marine, builder of aluminum custom yachts in Southern China, to form SCSA—Southern China Superyachts Alliance. Kingship will be building aluminum hulls, decks, and superstructures, while Jet Tern will be doing interior work—fit and finish; joinery, varnishing, decorating, furnishing, electrical, mechanical systems, and electronics commissioning. Jet Tern Marine models, like the Selene 128 to the 168 Ocean Explorer, are designed for fiberglass or aluminum construction, depending on the owner’s requirements. SCSA is able to take on custom superyacht projects for world-class designers like Guido de Groot, Bill Dixon, or Ivan Erdevicki. SCSA, with two major shipyards and the Selene Design Studio (SDS) is a strong contender in China’s growing superyacht industry.

Selene Yachts have come a long way in a relatively short 20-year timespan, since the first trawler was shipped in 1999! Three new lines have been added, combining the design talents of Howard Chen’s SDS (Selene Design Studio) with the world-renowned Guido de Groot superyacht design studio, expanding beyond the classic passage-making trawler market. The following is a brief overview of Selene Yachts current lines available in the US market:

Selene Classic Explorers (45, 49, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 66,72) – combine old world craftsmanship with new world technology. Capable of 3,000 NM range and 10 knot cruise speed. Ideal for Great Loop, ocean passage, islands, and coastal cruising.

Selene Voyager (38 Aft Cabin, 42 Aft Cabin, 42 Sedan, 50 Sedan) – newer design based on original Selene Archer hull. Exceptional design combined with masterful customized craftsmanship.

Selene Ocean Explorer (60, 72, 78, 92, 128) – expedition type boats that can still be operated by a small crew. Can be customized for owners or designed for charter use.

Selene Yachts Bi-Hull Ocean Explorer (70) – speedy new bi-hull passagemaker for exploring shallower island waters and lagoons.

Selene Ocean Clipper (59) – New de Groot designed semi-displacement hull for faster cruising without losing bluewater capability. Twin engines push 19-knot speed.

Artemis (43, 48, 56) – Motor Yachts designed by Guido de Groot. New Howard Chen/de Groot designed line from 43 to 86 ft. Innovative, stylish, fast yachts with twin engines for up to 27 knots.

With over 400 Selene Passagemaker Trawlers built and cruising around the world, there are currently only 5 models listed in the yacht brokerage MLS that are available in the USA. Pricing ranges from about $325,000 for a 2004 Selene 36 to about $1,195,000 for a 2006 Selene 62 Pilothouse model. They do tend to hold their value.

Ho Hum offers luxurious accommodations for extended cruising and liveaboard use. It features a spacious owner's cabin with an en-suite head amidships and two guest cabins forward with an additional head. One of the guest cabins doubles as an office. The interior is finished with high-quality materials, including teak joinery, teak and holly flooring, granite counters, stainless steel ports, and plush upholstery.

Entering from the large aft deck, one walks through the main salon, past the galley to port, and the stairway to the owner’s cabin to starboard before stepping up to the pilothouse. There is a stairway to the cabins located forward and to the starboard in the pilothouse, as well as stairs to the flybridge aft and to the starboard in the pilothouse.

The well-appointed salon is accessible from the aft deck. It is finished with quality teak joinery and teak and holly flooring. To the starboard, there are two seats and storage. To port, there is a folding dining table with an L-shaped settee. The upholstery was recently replaced. Thanks to large windows, the space has plenty of natural light and provides excellent exterior views. There are seven opening windows in the salon and galley. 

The galley is forward to port in the salon. There are overhead cabinets, under-counter cabinets/drawers, abundant storage, and Corian countertops.

The pilothouse is forward of the galley/salon and aft of the foredeck. It provides excellent visibility from the helm and has exterior doors to port and starboard. There is an L-shaped settee with a teak table, a single pilot berth, a helm seat.

Ho Hum’s accommodations include an owner’s cabin amidships with an en-suite head and two guest cabins with a shared head. A stairway leads to the guest cabins from the pilothouse, and a separate stairway leads to the owner's cabin in the salon.  

The heads have Techma electric flush toilets and separate showers.

The large owner’s cabin is amidships with easy access to the pilothouse, salon, and mechanical room via companionways, fore and aft. It features a queen bed, storage space, and an en-suite head with a separate shower.

The primary guest cabin is forward with a queen bed and storage. The primary guest cabin and guest cabin share the guest head.

The guest cabin and office are to port. It has twin offset beds, a storage locker, and a desk with a chair.

Hull and Deck

Beginning aft is a  stern platform  with stainless steel safety rails and a transom door leading to the aft deck. The  aft deck  is covered and offers plenty of room for deck chairs. It includes a deck hatch to access a large aft lazarette and a molded stairwell to the flybridge. There are side bulwark doors for access to the side decks, which are well-protected by high bulwarks. The aft cockpit and the covered portions of the side decks have glued-down teak decking. The exposed areas of the deck have molded non-skid. Bulwark cap rails are varnished teak with snap-on protective covers.

The  flybridge  offers excellent visibility from the helm station. A bimini covers it, and a fiberglass arch supports the radar and antennas. Built-in seating, a table, a helm station, two helm seats, a wet bar with a grill, and a sink make this space great for entertaining!

The Selene 53 Ocean Trawler is easy to maneuver thanks to bow and stern thrusters and its powerful 430 Cummins primary engine. There are two helms with redundant controls. One is in the enclosed pilothouse, and the other is on the flybridge.

Ho Hum has a Yanmar 52 HP "get home" engine with a separate shaft and feathering prop for redundancy.

• Replaced the vented loop hose on the exhaust side in 2023.
• Replaced the main engine sea cock with a 2-inch Apollo valve and adapter in 2020.

Construction and Air Draft

Gelcoat for hull (painted with Awlcraft in 2016), deck, superstructure & non-skid Vinylester resin for the first five lamination layers. Cymax bi-axis uni-direction stitched roving/mat. Glass mat and Divinycell core sandwich structure for hull side shell and superstructure. Longitudinal stringers & transverse frames system. Four watertight bulkheads (chain locker, fwd. E/R, after E/R, lazarette). Hull and deck joint sealed by glue bolted and laminated with mat and woven roving. Integral swim platform with extended hull. Recessed bow thruster tunnel. Integral FRP stern thruster.
