The development of an aerotowed propulsion concept that can be adapted to any type of vessel. Tested on a laboratory catamaran, the SeaKite automated system is designed to support the energy transition in the maritime sector.

Wind propulsion by aerotraction

Imagine a cargo ship propelled by a giant kite. The idea seems as obvious as it is relevant. To make it a reality is the challenge that BEYOND THE SEA, the company created by the sailor-engineer, Yves Parlier, aims to meet. This maritime cleantech laboratory proposes kite traction systems, capable of providing all or part of the energy needed to propel a ship, depending on the navigation area, the performance and the characteristics of the boat. After having distinguished himself in the most famous sailing competitions and at the initiative of numerous technological developments, this visionary sailor has surrounded himself with a team of naval architects and engineers in mechatronics, electronics, computer science, mechanical and industrial engineering to develop a unique expertise in this type of traction.

The company, based in the Arcachon basin, aims to respond to the problem of energy dependence of ship owners and the challenges of decarbonization. After the LibertyKite, designed for pleasure boating, small-scale fishing and ocean racing, the company has developed SeaKite, a fully automated system that reduces the emissions of the equipped vessel. Connected to the boat by its lines, the wing-shaped sail is automatically piloted and can fly statically or dynamically depending on the desired traction force. The wing can be used alone or in addition to another mode of propulsion. This innovation is now being used on a two-hull hydroplane, designed for full-scale testing. This ship, with its avant-garde lines, is about to embark on an odyssey with a double transatlantic voyage on the agenda to test this promising innovation in real navigation conditions, and to remove the last technological obstacles to its deployment throughout the maritime sector.

« This demonstration boat will allow us to test this kite and to develop all our traction systems. There is no more mast, nor sail as on a sailboat. This catamaran, entirely propelled by a kite, is intended to be a laboratory, on a 1/8th scale of the kites we wish to market. The wind is a great energy, it would be a waste not to use it. It is so obvious… »

Thierry Martinez shot these spectacular photos of Yves Parlier’s new Open 60 catamaran ‘Mediatis – Region Aquitaine’ (see previous news story here)  , from a helicopter last Friday.

According to Martinez the flight from Nantes to Arcachon, where they caught up with the cat on her way to Portugal for her first offshore trial, took an hour and a half.

Martinez commented on the day’s photography: “During the shooting, light was not very good, but again the action make those images the first one showing that revolutionary catamaran flying around 23-27kts with 18kts of wind. That boat look like a small brother of ‘Team Philips’ with one mast on each hull. Yves ‘s crew set up a headsail only on one mast. Acceleration is very impressive. She looks easy to sail, but wet like a Hobie Cat.”

The french sailor Yves Parlier has launched a new sailing 60 feet catamaran Médiatis Region Aquitaine. The catamaran has very interesting hulls and rig and a discussion about his design may be worth both in sail and power boats. But the interesting part is that the internet site http://www.parlier.org/ (in english and french) has very good pages about the design and construction with plenty of good and big images. All those interested by the high tech composites should look to these pages.

Yves started the Transat (Plymouth UK to Boston USA) on Monday, he is the only Catamaran in the 60ft multihull fleet. He is currently last but it is early days. see http://www.thetransat.com/en/default.aspx I would realy like to see this boat succeed.
Thanks for your kind comments I don't think the boat will have results in the NorthStar as this race is upwind. The hulls and rig of Mediatis are better suited for reaching. This boat must be very unconfortable upwind. I think in the next races this cat will be a strong contender because of the planning capacity of its hulls and the low center of effort of the sails. We'll see. The internet site is one of the best I've seen about race boats with plentiful of good pics.

For almost 15 years now, the famous French sailor/engineer Yves Parlier has been involved - through his company Beyond the Sea - in an innovation approach for the benefit of the planet. One of his main projects has been to develop kite wings usable on all types of craft, including cargo ships. Kites offer the advantage of greater efficiency over conventional rigs, with the ability to exploit steadier and stronger winds at greater height above sea level, and the elimination of heeling and the risk of capsizing. Another positive is that kites don’t impinge on the usable deck area. The initial idea is to use the wings to support the engines... and then the other way around! To demonstrate the merits of this green approach, Yves set himself a new challenge: to recondition his old Hydraplaneur (maintaining this large mothballed multihull ashore and afloat for over 10 years has been no easy task for the skipper!) and use it to establish a complete research and development campaign for propulsive kite wings, as well as a revolutionary drivetrain. Without its two existing spars, all the catamaran needs is a launching rig. The sails tested here are not the classic LibertyKite developed by the Beyond the Sea team (this sail is self-trimming with two locked-off sheets) but a laminar-flow wing made of Vectran®, much closer to those used by kitesurfers. The catamaran has now been renamed “Seakite” and operates, for the time being, with modest sail areas of 270 and 540 square feet (25 and 50 m²), in a semi- automatic mode. Eventually, the software developed especially for the Seakite should automatically manage the phases of feathering, bird mode (the sail taking off), static flight and finally dynamic flight, during which the sail makes a figure eight and manages to develop a traction force up to 10 times greater. Sail recovery will also be automated. Right now, the SeaKite can manage up to 5 tons of power, but Yves Parlier’s team intends to master much more ambitious systems, reaching 40 tons with 4,300 to 8,600-square foot (400 to 800 m²) sails. www.beyond-the-sea.com

Hydraplaneur A short… but brilliant career

The Hydraplaneur is an offshore racing catamaran that was launched in 2006. The twin-rigged craft measures 60 feet (18.28 m) in length and 49½ feet (15.05 m) in the beam, with the hulls being chined, much like seaplane floats. A rustic way, in our modern-day times of foiling, to escape Archimedean navigation - but one that’s also simpler and more reliable in the absence of additional appendages. Although the boat didn’t last long in the face of the diktats of ocean racing rules, its designer Yves Parlier nevertheless managed to beat the record for the distance covered in 24 hours single-handed, with 586.00 miles, or an average speed of 24.41 knots, the year it was launched.
