The flying megayacht: Italian designer devises exclusive catamaran blimp
The aerospace industry is currently living through an era of innovation, unlike anything it has seen in recent years. From drones and air taxis to sea gliders and new clean propulsion technologies, it seems that the floodgates of creativity are wide open following decades of slow but steady incremental advances. Even airships may be about to stage a comeback .
This passion for innovation is encouraging entrepreneurs from across the globe to propose ever more outlandish concepts — one of which is the eye-catching Air Yacht, a hybrid vehicle that looks like a crossover between an airship and a catamaran.
For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .
This futuristic aircraft is the work of Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, founder of Rome -based Lazzarini Design Studio, which has designed a number of innovative projects for the automotive, yachting and aerospace industries.
Composed of two large parallel blimps linked together by carbon fiber bridges that hold the whole structure together, the amphibious Air Yacht would be able to move almost seamlessly through the air and water. Passengers and cargo would travel in a rigid, aerodynamic cabin between the two blimp structures.
This levitating contraption, which would be powered by hydrogen and solar power from its rooftop panels, would be able to reach speeds of up 70 knots (nearly 81 mph) when flying and 5 knots (almost 6 mph) when sailing, its designers say.
The choice of hydrogen is an interesting one, as other recent airship projects have opted to use helium instead of hydrogen.
Asked about this decision, a spokesperson at the design studio said it opted for hydrogen due to its larger lifting power, which makes it possible to limit the volume of the blimps. Despite hydrogen being flammable, current technologies and materials make it possible to use the gas safely and securely, the studio says.
While the original concept measured a whopping 265 meters (869 feet) long and was capable of carrying 200 passengers, the latest iteration is much more compact at 100 meters (328 feet) long. (Presumably, it would have a somewhat lower payload, too.)
The Air Yacht has a stated flying endurance of 48 hours, and it is being designed to allow for boarding and deboarding while on the move. Helicopters would be able to land on a helipad located on top of the cabin to drop off or pick up passengers, the studio says.
Given the limited number of travelers with access to helicopters, it's not surprising that the aircraft concept is targeted at wealthy individuals as a flying megayacht of sorts. The luxe cabin design features a shipowner's suite that occupies the central space and provides 360-degree views. Additionally, there are five smaller suites, plus a large area for lounging and dining.
Although Lazzarini Design Studio has yet to secure investors for the Air Yacht, the studio is moving forward with testing a 30-meter (98-foot) scale model in Germany later this year.
There will likely be some unexpected challenges in this next phase of the Air Yacht's production journey, and only time will tell whether this latest aircraft will help spark a renewed interest in airships.
THE BIRTH OF A NEW AIRCRAFT
With air navigation, airyacht reinvents the art of cruising..

SAVE RESOURCES
To be lighter than air, AirYacht will use material-saving construction technologies, and advanced recycling solutions during operations.
NO EMISSIONS
All systems will be powered only by electricity.
NO IMPACT on VISITED PLACES
No infrastructure is needed to board people.
No airport. No roads.
The elevator, a key innovation
While flying airships is known for more than a century, the way to unlock sustainable airship cruises was to be able to embark passengers in flight with no ground infrastructure.
At AirYacht we developed the elevator: it uses a lot of technologies like active stabilization, AI controlling or safety monitoring. With it you will be able to go for a visit on the ground and then come back to have dinner onboard.
The AIRSHIP : Safe & Sustainable
At the forefront of an air transport new era, AirYacht will use the largest rigid airship to come on earth as a flying vector. Safe and certified, it will be filled with helium, it will reduce drastically the energy need for air navigation and have no impact on visited places (no ground infrastructure).
Among key features and innovation areas
The elevator : Go everywhere on the ground during your cruise.
The propulsion : Hybrid and soon H2 – sustainable and emission free.
Limited use of resources : Water recycling, energy optimization through AI control of systems, fuel cell.

Air Yacht 80 a dream package
- In partnership with Yachting World
- March 14, 2024
Designed for the truly discerning sailor, the Air Yacht 80 – a 24m carbon fibre catamaran – marries the science of performance with the art of luxury.
What if you could have it all? The speed of an ocean racing multihull, combined with the comfort and space of a luxury motoryacht, all in a bluewater vessel which can be managed shorthanded. For John Mountain such a yacht didn’t exist… so he decided to create it for himself, and consequently for others to enjoy without needing to go down a full custom route.
Partnering with world leading firms, including Berret-Racoupeau design, North Sails, Rigging Projects and Lorima masts, helped bring Mountain’s ideas to life. Special attention was paid to the latest state-of-the-art technology and inbuilt safety features to facilitate performance sailing with just two people.
Tuned to perfection
With its distinctive wave-piercing bows, the Air Yacht 80 can match the true wind from 8 knots and reach speeds over 25 knots. Weighing in at just 29.5 tonnes puts it in a class of its own for a catamaran of this size. To achieve this, carbon fibre is used for the full build, including hulls, rig and rigging, while titanium deck fittings help minimise weight and maintenance.
Lifting rudders and curved daggerboards give the yacht another edge: upwind performance paired with shoal draught capability (think fast fetching in the shallows of the Bahamas). In terms of power and propulsion, there is a hybrid system of diesel and electric engines, while the 67kW battery bank is topped up by 10kW hydro-regeneration under sail plus a 4kW solar array.
A raft of clever features help make such a large yacht manageable. Hydraulic furlers are built into the longeron, retractable capstans make for easy mooring, while a hand-held remote control allows for easy docking and anchoring from anywhere onboard. Safety features are equally prioritised, and include the renowned UpsideUp anti-capsize system, load cells in the rigging and cutting-edge anchor guardian technology.
Luxury living
The live-aboard experience is uncompromisingly luxurious, from the drop-down cinema screens on the flybridge and in the saloon to the ergonomics of the custom-designed furnishings throughout the yacht’s interior. Finishes are superb, with wengé, walnut and teak wood floors and furniture, as well as plush pile carpets. You’ll find a fabulous entertainment area complete with barbecue, sun loungers and drinks fridge on the covered flybridge, before descending to the main deck with its 80m2 of seamless indoor-outdoor living space.
The cabins (offering space for 8 guests plus crew) include the owner’s stateroom, with its en suite king-size bedroom and separate study/dressing room. This has a Murphy bed on the bulkhead that easily converts it into a fourth suite if needed. The chef-style galley, with its large windows providing clear sightlines of the ocean, is complete with a full suite of integrated Fisher & Paykel and Miele appliances and equipment seamlessly integrated into the design. A separate crew cabin, a 7m forepeak tool/toy room, large sail locker and customised storage areas add behind-the-scenes convenience.
Fully loaded
The Air Yacht 80 is a truly turn-key purchase: everything you need on board is included, from the finest Egyptian cotton bed linen to the Highfield tender, with a dedicated space designed for every last item. This means that all you need to do is stock up on your consumables, and set sail (at speed)!
The remarkable Air Yacht 80 is available via a limited release to a select few customers. Hull number two is currently under discussion. For enquiries and further information, visit airyacht.com .

Another of these yachts is the PARSIFAL II, a charter yacht that can readily welcome up to 10 guests at a time and can be attended to by six qualified crew members.
Designed for entertainment, the AIR yacht lacks nothing in the amenities department. She has a full-blown gym, a swimming pool, a beauty room, an elevator, an impressive movie theatre, a jacuzzi, a spa room, and a commercial helipad.
She also has full air-conditioning and internet connection throughout the yacht.
Adding to this, she has access to tons of toys on board. Guests can choose from a plethora of activities they can do, such as riding in one of their jet skis, kayaks, scuba diving equipment, water skis, wave runners, and even inflatable water toys.
Specifications
The AIR yacht currently spans 265 feet or 81 meters, has a beam of 38 feet or 11.6 meters, and a draft of 11.8 feet or 3.55 meters. She is built with a steel hull, along with an aluminum superstructure.
Although she weighs a hefty 1,893 tons, her powerful twin MTU engines partnered with her jaw-dropping 177,000-liter fuel tanks, she can easily cover a distance of over 5,000 nautical miles and can cruise at speeds of 15 knots, and can even go up to speeds of 17 knots.
AIR superyacht was engineered by famous designer Henri de Voogt, who started his passion for yachts by participating in races.
They are now famous for their creative exterior yacht designs and have been involved in several yachts such as Bliss and Viva.

The World’s First “Air Yacht” Would Sail in the Sky and Sea (With Zero Emissions)
Yachts and private planes make for luxurious ways to zip from one place to another, but recently, a businessman based in Germany and Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini discovered what happens when they combine boats and jets: the ultra-sleek sky yacht. Equipped with eight counter-rotating electric engines powered by super-lightweight batteries and solar panels, the nearly 500-foot-long yacht can traverse the sky (and sea) at 60 knots for more than two days straight with zero emissions. Plus, aside from its full-electric mobility, the air yacht is sustainable in other ways too: It will be built entirely from carbon fiber, which is as high-strength as it is lightweight.
The 500-foot futuristic vessel comprises three main parts: a central compartment with a living room and dining area flanked by two inflatable helium blimps that house 10 suites.
Lazzarini’s design looks like something out of the future: a spacious living room and dining area housed within the sky yacht’s central torpedo-shaped structure that’s connected via eight carbon bridges (four on each side) to two 150-foot-long blimps. And the blimps that contain a whopping 14,125,867 cubic feet of helium that keep the vessel high in the sky, flanking the main compartment, aren’t just there to elevate the jet: Between the two, there are 10 guest suites, all of which boast 360-degree views.
The two balloon-like compartments on either side of the impressive vessel comprise an inflatable base that allows the innovative machine to float atop the water surface when the owner is in the mood to sail the sea versus the sky. Though being able to choose which medium makes the most sense for specific destinations sounds like an ideal way to travel, the sky yacht is, unfortunately, still quite a ways off from replacing typical ships and planes.
The enormous sky yacht is too big to simply park at a marina while its guests climb aboard, so it comes equipped with a retractable staircase.
For the private owner who commissioned the estimated $627,511,500 sky yacht, however, his new mode of transportation is the way of the future. In fact, Lazzarini has promised that a first-scale model prototype will lift into the air later this year, and a collection of slightly varying designs (of different lengths) is currently in the early phases of both engineering and prototyping. So, perhaps we’ll all be passengers onboard a boat that flies before the end of the decade.

4 victims on Mike Lynch's yacht were trapped inside air bubbles before suffocating, report suggests
- Four victims in a sunken superyacht were likely trapped inside air bubbles, per Italian media.
- The four ran out of oxygen and suffocated, la Repubblica reported, citing autopsy results.
- The yacht sank last month, claiming seven lives, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.
Four of the bodies recovered from Mike Lynch's superyacht showed signs that they had been trapped inside air bubbles before suffocating to death, an Italian media report said.
La Repubblica, citing autopsy results, reported that four of the seven victims who died after British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month died of "atypical drowning."
The autopsies found no water in their lungs, trachea, or stomach, which suggested that they ran out of oxygen while stuck inside air pockets in one of the yacht's cabins, per the outlet.
Pathologists from the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Palermo's Polyclinic carried out the autopsies on the bodies of Lynch's attorney Chris Morvillo; his wife, Neda Morvillo; the Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer; and his wife, Judy Bloomer, on Monday and Tuesday, the report said.
Tiziana Lenzo, a press officer for Palermo's Polyclinic, told Business Insider that the hospital was not allowed to comment on the autopsy results because the incident is under investigation.
The 183-foot Bayesian superyacht sank on August 19 during stormy weather near Porticello, prompting the Italian Coast Guard to launch a search-and-rescue effort.
Fifteen of the 22 people on board survived, while seven — including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter — were confirmed dead.
Matthew Schanck, the chairman of the UK's Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told BI last month, while the rescue efforts were still ongoing, that divers were likely searching for air pockets where survivors may be located.
Meanwhile, Nick Sloane, who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, told Sky News at the time that divers had a "very small" window of time to try to locate anyone stuck inside, hopefully in "an air pocket."
In the aftermath of the sinking, some have focused blame on crew members.
Related stories
Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the firm that built the Bayesian in 2008, criticized crew members for not following protocol and failing to prepare for the storm.
Costantino told the Financial Times that the yacht was "designed to be absolutely stable."
Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of the team that designed the yacht, told La Stampa that the Bayesian was built to go to sea in "any weather" and that a side hatch left open could have let water enter the vessel, per Reuters.
During a press conference last month, investigators said five bodies had been discovered in the same cabin.
Italian prosecutors said they had opened a manslaughter investigation following the sinking.
The captain of the yacht, James Cutfield from New Zealand, and two Britons — an engineer, Tim Parker Eaton, and a crew member, Matthew Griffiths — have been placed under investigation, per Sky News .
