I agree with Yelper Janene who said: "he building is dated but the location is great" And it really is dated but being right on the water, has wonderful views. A lot of it looks like it's the same as its 1913 establishment date. The claim to fame is that the Mount Dora Yacht Club is Florida's oldest inland Yacht Club. But guess what it doesn't have? It doesn't have any yachts; hence a yachtless yacht club. So, about the only use of the place is as a rental facility for weddings, etc.

Photo of Janene H.

The building is dated but the location is great! Located right in downtown Mount Dora, right on the lake, and a shirt walk to the shopping district. We attended a wedding here and it was very nice. Half of the main room was set up for dancing while the other was set up for dining. There are large picture windows which take in the view. Parking was roped off and was very limited. It is an interesting history lesson looking at all the photos and memorabilia along the walls. Even though the building is dated it is still charming, much like Mount Dora itself!

71st Annual Yacht Club Reggatta Ready To Set Sail

Mount Dora welcomes sailors from all over the state to the MDYC's 71st Annual Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, March 23rd – 24th 2024. The races begin around noon on Sat and 9:30am on Sun near the lighthouse at Graham Pointe. Watching the beautiful masts move across Lake Dora is a sight you won’t want to miss. With three courses and almost 100 sailors and some good weather, it hopes to be a breathtaking sight for participants and spectators alike all over Lake Dora. The Mount Dora Yacht Club comes together with almost all of its members volunteering to serve in some way at this weekend long event each year. For 2024 they are proud to have Advent Health as the presenting sponsor. In addition, another 50+ sponsors give to make this a true sailor’s delight. Coming from all over the state, the sailors’ ages range from 8-80. The committee has met their goal to enlist more junior sailors by providing scholarships and this year is a big success doing just that! Families in Florida have many opportunities to be active outdoors and being on the water is no exception. “We are thrilled to have more youth sailors participating in our regatta this year than ever. In addition to Lake Eustis Sailing-Youth Foundation, who has supported this regatta for years, we also have three other youth sailing groups” says Regatta Chairperson, Edee Robinson. “The skills learned are true life skills including applied mathematics and science, balance, agility, strength, and overall confidence…alongside the youth will be adult sailors, many who have been sailing for decades”, says Robinson. Participants not only come to sail but they also boost our economy…many staying in downtown Airbnb’s, local hotels and the like. The rich tradition of sailing and a community coming together for water sporting makes the MDYC’s Regatta the longest standing event in Mt Dora and the longest running annual festival in the state. For more information, call 352.516.4031 The Mount Dora Yacht Club is located at 351 West Fourth Avenue, Mount Dora Fl 32757

is located in beautiful Lake County, Florida. Their clubhouse is nestled in the quaint town of along the banks of . The goal of the club is to provide an enjoyable atmosphere where sailors can gather for social events, promote water activities, and cultivate community relations.

In 1913, and a group of fellow boat owners met at his boathouse to discuss and make plans for organizing a yacht club. They enthusiastically drew up Articles of Incorporation, subscribed money to buy land on the lake and build a clubhouse, and voted for the officers, making himself the first Commodore. Built at a cost of $5,000, the clubhouse was ready for the new members to enjoy by October of the same year. The first Regatta, featuring power boats, took place shortly after the opening of the . Many regattas were held that year to encourage boating, but the first one was so special that all the businesses closed so everyone in town could watch the races.

The , the received its charter on October 11, 1913, signed by Governor Park Trammel. The club has been in existence ever since and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2003.

The original club was formed for the "promotion of yachting and education in seamanship." All members were required to be boat owners, a rule which was enforced until the 1940s, when the loss of membership due to the war, and gasoline rationing made the requirement impractical. During World War II, several MDYC members assisted the Coast Guard in patrolling Lake Harris every day. The Club itself was used as a USO during the war, and food was prepared by the members, who bore both the expense and the sacrifice of some of their food ration coupons in order to provide for the servicemen and women who visited the USO. Some 17,000 servicemen and women were entertained at the . At the time Mount Dora’s population was less than 4,000 people. The club never closed its doors, even though World War II took a heavy toll on the membership. It remains the in Florida.

Both regattas and cruises were major activities in earlier years, and continue to be so today. In the beginning, however, races were held for power boats and speed racing. Since 1953, have replaced them, and have been held every year since except for one when a storm with lightning prevented the Regatta from taking place.

In 1966, the original building burned, and a new one took its place at the foot of 4th Avenue on Lake Dora.

Mt. Dora winter general Membership meeting

February 25 - 26, 2022

Friday Night, February 25th: Friday night found the members of FCA enjoying adult beverages and plenty of scrumptious appetizers provided by Mt. Dora Yacht Club.  FCA member guests and Mt. Dora members, both general members and FCA members, had a delightful evening catching up on what had been happening in their respective clubs.

Saturday General Membership Meeting: Saturday morning started with a continental breakfast of muffins, Danishes, biscuits with jams, fruit, juices and plenty of coffee. During the registration period, members took advantage of the time to shop the well-stocked Ship's Store managed by Quartermaster Beverly Plummer.  this was a time to pick out those uniform items in demand. Commodore Ray Dewrell called the general membership meeting to order.  The Flag Officers and Program/Committee chairs reported on current and future activities that the organization has been and/or will be conducting.  Minutes of this meeting will be posted to the website as soon as received. At the conclusion of the general meeting, Past Commodore Charlie Kennedy spoke about the history of Mt. Dora and the role that the Mt. Dora Yacht Club has played in Mt. Dora's growth through the years.  Mt. Dora Yacht Club, as the oldest inland yacht club in the state of Florida, was started in 1913 by Henry Fuller. A hearty sandwich buffet was served to attending members and their spouses of the meeting.  Members clustered in groups to share information about their different clubs and how their clubs had survived the pandemic. Past Commodore Joe Tringali, of Palm Coast Commodores, gave an informative and in-depth lecture about yacht clubs and the law.  P/C Tringali provided those attending with much needed knowledge concerning how the law can affect the everyday activities of a club.

Arthur “Dean” Guy, commodore of the Mount Dora Yacht Club, 351 W. Fourth Ave., said he sent a letter to members seeking money for the project and 70 percent of them contributed.

The 1,000-square-foot pier was dedicated in January.

Guy said the decision to build the private dock came because of crowding at the municipal pier next to the yacht club.

“Our members used that dock for many years. We realized we needed one of our own,” Guy said.

Wise Marine Construction of Orlando designed and built the 65-foot-wide pier. It is 114 feet long, with the walkway reaching 90 feet and then branching into three 24-foot finger piers that surround boat slips.

Guy said about 14 boats can dock in the slips and the outside area.

“That depends on the particular depth of the water at any given time,” he said.

Guy said the dock needed to be stronger than a typical residential pier, so it was built using larger pilings and ledgers. He said a typical residential dock has pilings of 4 by 4 inches and ledgers of 2 by 6 inches; pilings used for the yacht club dock are 4 by 6 inches and ledgers are 2 by 8 inches.

Also, a residential pier would normally be built on 8-foot centers. Centers in the yacht club’s pier are 10 feet.

The walkway is 5 feet wide and paved with 2-by-6-inch boards laid crosswise.

Guy said pilings reach 8 feet beneath Lake Dora at the pier’s end.

“A lot of sand on the lake bottom had to be blown away before the hardpan was reached,” he said.

At the pier’s entrance is a 16-by-40-foot upland deck with built-in seating to be used for social activities.

“We have a social evening planned for May,” Guy said. “We’ll use the deck to gather for barbecues and other activities – perhaps have a band.”

Past the deck is a gated entry with key pad security. Two glass lanterns top the gate and others grace the deck, the walkway and the end of the pier. Some are powered by photoelectric cells that switch the lights on from dusk until dawn.

In the center of the dock stands a flagpole flying an American flag, the Florida state flag and the Mount Dora Yacht Club flag. The pole also is illuminated at night.

Construction took two months.

“One of our members devoted a lot of time working on the permitting, which involved the St. Johns River Water Management District,” Guy said.

Jimmy’s Electric Service of Mount Dora provided electrical work.

Guy said the Mount Dora Yacht Club, built in 1913, is the third-oldest club of its type in Florida and the state’s oldest inland water yacht club. The club has about 100 members and 40 associates, who are widows of former members.
