Body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch recovered from yacht, Italian official says, as divers search for his daughter

T he body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the sunken Bayesian superyacht, Italian interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters Thursday.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing, Mariani said, and divers are still searching the area where the vessel sank.

Earlier Thursday, a fifth body was brought to shore from the wreck of the boat, which sank earlier in the week. A CNN team on the ground saw Italian authorities move the body from a rescue boat to ambulances at the Sicilian port of Porticello.

The British-flagged vessel, with 22 passengers and crew members on board, rapidly sank after its mast, one of the world’s tallest, broke in half during a violent storm. Fifteen people were rescued on Monday and one body was recovered – thought to be that of the onboard chef Recaldo Thomas. Six others were initially reported missing.

As investigators probe the cause of the wreck, the CEO of the firm that owns the vessel’s manufacturer has detailed how a litany of avoidable “mistakes” may have contributed to the ship sinking.

Once they became aware of the bad weather, the ship’s crew should have locked down the hull, closed all doors and hatches and made all guests congregate in the ship’s assembly point, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. All it took was a 40-degree tilt and those in the cabin found themselves with the door above. Can you imagine a 60-70 year old man climbing out?” he said.

In a separate interview with Sky News, Costantino said vessels like the Bayesian are “safest in the most absolute sense” ought to have been “unsinkable.”

“First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing into the wind. Second, with the structure of the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies,” he said.

Constantino said he was in a state of “sadness and disbelief” since learning that the Bayesian – built in 2008 by the Italian company Perini Navi, which was acquired by The Italian Sea Group in 2021 – sank early Monday.

The six individuals reported missing were Lynch and his daughter; Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; prominent American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Italian authorities are not yet disclosing the names of all those whose bodies have been brought ashore. This is likely because in Italy, a person close to the deceased must formally identify the body, before a coroner or the prosecutor’s office confirms this.

Given that the sinking of the Bayesian is under criminal investigation, formal identifications will likely come from the prosecutor’s office. Italy’s civil protection agencies do not have the authority to confirm victims’ identities.

Since the boat sank, emergency crews have battled difficult conditions to enter the wreck, which is around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet.) Divers have had around only 12 minutes to reach and explore the site before having to resurface.

Initial reports suggest a small  waterspout , which developed over the area the boat was in Siciliy on Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Four days in, Italian authorities are still trying to understand how the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht sank so quickly. Separately, the United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has also opened an investigation, saying on Wednesday that it would deploy a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the scene.

CCTV shows footage of sinking

Waterspouts, a type of tornado, are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by  high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning . While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere. Waterspouts in Sicily, however are rare.

Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, stressed that there was no indication that the design or construction of the boat was at fault in the ship’s sinking. “This episode sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact,” he said.

Unverified security camera footage released on Wednesday appears to have shown the moments that the tornado sank the yacht. As rain pelted down on the port, a grainy video shows the boat being battered by the storm, rocking violently from side to side before capsizing.

One witness, the owner of a villa looking out to where the Bayesian was anchored, said that after news of the sinking yacht emerged, he watched back his CCTV footage, where the boat could be seen sinking.

“In just 60 seconds, you can see the ship disappear,” he told Italian outlet ANSA. “You can see clearly what’s happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. It disappeared in a very short time.”

This story has been updated with additional information.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

z yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

On Board 49m M/Y Ocean Z with Capt. Billy Lockhart

z yacht owner

Claire Griffiths is  Dockwalk ’s contributing editor in the Mediterranean. She fled to the sunny south of France from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Claire has a background in journalism for national and regional UK press and a career in political and corporate PR prior to that. Claire’s hobbies include eating, sleeping and dancing at inopportune times. She tries to avoid sheer drops and Olympic bobsled runs. Email Claire at [email protected]

Capt. Billy Lockhart has always loved pressing buttons and messing around on boats. Throw his extrovert personality into the mix, and he was born to be a yacht captain. He began his career running the dive department on cruise ships, where he also met his wife, the casino bank manager on board.

“Cruise ships go to all the same places as the superyachts, and my wife and I watched the yacht crew go by and we said to ourselves, ‘Now that is what we should be doing!’” So on December 5, 2000, they drove from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and dockwalked. “I had enough sea time to do my 100-ton license and my wife started out as a stew,” Lockhart says.

Lockhart’s first captain position was for the owners of NASCAR, and he stayed 15 years. “All of our boats were called M/Y Finish Line . We went through a dozen different boats and the last one we built from scratch at Trinity,” he says. “In 2014, we flew to Amsterdam for the World Superyacht Awards and won our category.”

This year, M/Y Ocean Z was a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards. This steel-hulled, full-displacement, true bluewater superyacht was delivered in May 2022. “ Ocean Z is a very interesting boat because it was built on spec,” Lockhart says. “We made the contract rather late, so it was a marathon sprint from start to finish, getting the boat finished and delivered. We put a lot of time and effort into making sure that everything we had control over was done to the highest level of perfection as well as customized to the way the owner likes to enjoy yachting.”

A good deal of effort was put into the loose furniture layout, the deck exterior, and the interior soft goods. In doing so, Lockhart reckons they were able to imprint a great “personality” onto an already great boat. “Reymond Langton Design did a very good job of putting together a very nice high-end interior, but also monochromatic, which is appropriate when what you are doing is trying to sell the boat to a future client and you want that boat to be as appealing to as broad a market as possible. And it was our job to come in and put our personality on it and it came out very nicely.”

The yacht has already completed two Atlantic crossings and more than 15,000 miles in the first year. “She just runs like a dream, rides like a dream,” Lockhart says. “We are not remotely the biggest in the Mediterranean, but we are easily the prettiest!”

Lockhart is particularly impressed by the boat’s use of space as every cranny is used and enjoyed. “Typically, on these boats you have areas where people just don’t go — that’s not the case here, every area has its own appeal, its own function, its own versatility, from the beach club to the sun deck, to the wheelhouse deck aft. They are all very inviting.”

The yacht has a traditional layout. The only unorthodox element is the tender bay on the bridge deck forward of the pilothouse. “That,” says Lockhart, “gives you a wholly dedicated space aft, which was a new feature for us. It took a while to figure out what that space meant for us.” It now has various functions: a gym for parents, a “den” for the teenage girls, and at anchor, it’s a beautiful beach club. “We decided toy-storage wise that anything visible needed to look like a high-end retail showroom,” he says. The team opted for a cantilever umbrella and large daybed on the sun deck.

“I’m very happy with her seaworthiness,” Lockhart says. “We’ve done two crossings with this boat and it’s definitely a luxury not to have to put a lot of concern into things like weather. We try to avoid getting beaten up by it — I’ve had more than enough of that — but on board Ocean Z , if you’ve got to go, you can go.”

Machinery wise, the systems meet expected standards and Lockhart considers it a very well put together boat, although if he had written the spec, he would have done it a bit differently here and there. “The layout for crew duties is fine: the engine room is compact but accessible, the stew pantry is not huge but completely functional, the galley has a nice space, and there is plenty of cold storage,” Capt. Lockhart says. “The exterior decks are very large and, despite the fact there’s very little built-in furniture, there’s still plenty of storage for bosun’s stuff, and so on. Crew accommodation is nicely outfitted, the sound privacy is fantastic — you can’t hear anything on the other side of the door.”

Eastern Med is the itinerary this summer; Scandinavia and Alaska beckon for future cruise, for the yacht plans to do everything but Zzzzz.

Threads spotted exploring ads, but says 'no immediate timeline' toward monetization

Instagram says it's not testing ads in Threads and has no immediate plans to monetize after multiple developers and reverse engineers uncovered references to ad products in the app's code, including the word "ads" itself, as well as references to sponsored items and ads configuration. A JSON file that developers used, presumably for testing purposes, was also discovered in the public-facing Threads mobile app. One of the developers who uncovered these findings, Alessandro Paluzzi, was also able to force a post to appear as a sponsored post, which he shared on X. The post shows how a "Sponsored" label would appear next to someone's Threads username.

CEO of company that made sunken yacht in ‘disbelief’ as he claims vessel was ‘unsinkable’

CEO of company that made sunken yacht in ‘disbelief’ as he claims vessel was ‘unsinkable’

The 543 tonne yacht was dubbed 'the safest in the most absolute sense'.

Niamh Shackleton

The CEO of The Italian Sea Group has spoken out following the devastating sinking of a superyacht carrying 22 people off the coast of Italy.

The Italian Sea Group own the firm Perini Navi, who built the Bayesian - the 543 tonne yacht that sank earlier this week - in 2008.

The 56-meter long vessel, which boasts the world's tallest aluminium mast, was refurbished in 2020.

On Monday (August 19), the Bayesian was out at sea in Sicily when a sudden and powerful storm struck, causing the yacht to capsize.

The storm was so violent that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea, BBC News reports .

15 passengers onboard went on to be saved by emergency services, but sadly six people have been confirmed to have died while one other remains missing.

One body that's been identified is that of 'British Bill Gates', Mike Lynch.

It was confirmed today (August 22) that the tech tycoon's body had been recovered , but his 18-year-old daughter Hannah still remains missing.

As the search for the remaining missing passengers continues, The Italian Sea Group CEO Giovanni Costantino has spoken out and labeled the superyacht as 'unsinkable'.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he told Sky News.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

Costantino added that their structure and keel made them 'unsinkable bodies'.

Addressing Monday's tragedy, the millionaire went on: "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

He added that the sinking 'put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other'.

CCTV footage of the the storm hitting the yacht has been released where the vessel is seen sinking beneath the waves in a matter of a seconds.

The video confirmed that 'nothing could be done' for the yacht and its passengers because it 'disappeared in a very short time'.

The captain of the ship (who survived the ordeal) has since admitted that he didn't see the storm coming before it hit the superyacht.

It's unclear if anything could have been done had he known the storm was approaching, however.

The yacht was moored about a half-mile offshore off Porticello near Palermo at the time the storm hit around 5am local time.

Capgemini and America’s Cup Media to bring a new dimension to the 37th America’s Cup experience with WindSight IQ™

Breakthrough technology will visualize the wind live on screen, allowing fans and commentators to better understand optimum routes and team tactics, and making coverage of the sport more accessible than ever before

Paris, August 22, 2024 – Capgemini and the America’s Cup Media today revealed WindSight IQ™, the product innovation they will bring to the broadcast of the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup, as part of their global partnership announced earlier this year . For the first time, viewers and race commentators will be able to actually see the wind and how it varies across the racecourse in real-time. Furthermore, a yacht simulator will take the wind data and calculate the optimal routes around the course, enabling commentators and viewers to predict what teams on the water should do or analyze how teams could have won a race. A feat of engineering and design, WindSight IQ™ means that commentators and viewers will have more data and insight into the pinnacle event of international sailing than is available to the competing teams on the water.

Passion, meet innovation.

Tech is now an integral part of how fans consume sports

Viewing habits are changing, a recent study by the Capgemini Research Institute [1] found that 84% of fans say emerging technologies have enhanced their overall viewing experience. With 77% of Gen Z and 75% of Millennials preferring to watch sport outside of live venues, the viewing experience on screen is more important than ever. Wind patterns are a key factor in sailing that can change the course of a race and make the difference between winning or losing. For the first time, these wind patterns will be revealed and visualized by WindSight IQ ™ to bring a whole new dimension to the race experience for fans and broadcasters.

“WindSight IQ ™ is an innovation America’s Cup Media have been evaluating for a long time now, our objective has been to take another quantum leap in using technology to increase the understanding of sailing and the intricacies that the sailors at the pinnacle of our sport have to conquer. But to achieve our objective we needed to find a partner that was equally driven by pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation which Capgemini clearly were. So, for the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup WindSight IQ ™ is a significant advancement for the consumption of our sport,” explains Grant Dalton, CEO of the America’s Cup Event. “Four elements determine the race winner: the boat design, the team, the water, and the wind. Before and during the race, commentators will now be able to see the real-time wind patterns and explain to the viewers the options for the competing yachts. Being able to see the unseen wind and compare teams’ actual performances and tactical decisions to the optimum routes, will mean audiences can follow and engage in the racing on a whole new level. We are really looking forward to the impact WindSight IQ ™ will bring to this year’s Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup viewing experience.”

Revealing the wind to millions in real time

Due to the technical challenge, no-one has been able to accurately demonstrate visualization of the wind in real-time yacht racing conditions – until now. Combining its expertise in technology, engineering, data and design, Capgemini and America’s Cup Media, the host broadcaster for the event, will use LiDAR (light detection and ranging), sensor fusion and scientific computation to reveal the wind in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) graphics. The wind field data is also fed in real-time to a yacht simulator and used to create a live ‘ghost boat’ simulation that can be projected onto the racecourse through AR and VR graphics. It will show the optimal path that the crews should take given the measured variations in wind pressure, sheers, orientation, and speed.

To accurately collect raw wind data, three LiDARs have been positioned along the Barcelona waterfront overlooking the racecourse, scanning the full race area. Each LiDAR has an average 6.5km scanning range up to a maximum of 12km, and measures wind speeds, every 1.5 meters from 0 to 12km, up to 38m/s (73 knots) with an accuracy of <0.1m/s. WindSight IQ ™ supplements the LiDARs with wind data directly from the racing yachts and buoys’ wind sensors. All these data streams are fused using innovative algorithms to enable a wind field to be created over the entire racecourse. The wind field is refreshed every second based on the sensor measurements and predictive wind models.

“Through technological innovation, combining laser sensor technology with advanced engineering and new visualization techniques, WindSight IQ ™ brings together the digital and physical worlds,” explains Keith Williams, Capgemini’s Chief Engineer for WindSight IQ ™ . “The wind plays a decisive role in the teams’ choices during the race, and by visualizing it, viewers can now see and comprehend the detailed pattern of wind speed and direction across the racecourse, as well as the best potential paths to be followed. The core challenge of this innovation lies in combining both engineering and design; accurately capturing the intricate patterns of the wind and also portraying it in a way that fans and commentators can easily see and understand. Our goal is to make the coverage of the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup more captivating and immersive than it has ever been.”

WindSight IQ™ is a turnkey solution designed, built and operated through a partnership between America’s Cup Media and Capgemini, combining its expertise in technology, engineering, data and design to feed the America’s Cup Media broadcast systems with real-time wind field visuals and AR/VR designs. The three LiDARs used as part of the solution are supplied by LUMIBIRD .

About The America’s Cup

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy −dating back to 1851– and stands as one of the hardest sporting endeavours. The New York Yacht Club held the trophy for 132 years before losing it in 1983 to Australia. Since then, the Cup has only been won by teams from the United States, Switzerland and New Zealand. The current Defender of the America’s Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup will take place between 22 nd August and 22 nd October 2024 in the beating heart of Barcelona, one of the most visited cities on planet earth. Situated around Port Vell and out along the beach to Port Olympic, the sailing world has made Barcelona their home for what promises to be one of the most intense America’s Cups in the event’s 174-year history.

Zekelman Industries has been identified as the buyer of movie mogul Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas, a so-called ‘superyacht’ which went on the market earlier this year. Already renamed Man of Steel, the 2010-built luxury cruiser was listed for sale at a cool US$158 million (C$202 million).

It’s a 282-foot (86-metre) floating palace of sleek elegance. There’s a helipad, swimming pool and jacuzzi on the deck; cinema; gym and massage, sauna and steam rooms; nine cabins, including owner’s suite with private deck and a VIP stateroom. There’s room for 20 guests and crew quarters for 28 staff to serve them while afloat.

An elevator carries occupants to the various decks, adorned in teak and other exotic materials. The yacht carries two custom-built tenders — a 30-foot open sport boat and 34-foot “limousine” boat.

With an estimated top speed of 20 knots (37 km/h), it has a cruising range of 5,200 nautical miles (9,630 km) at 16 knots.

It’s the latest “Man of Steel” incarnation for the steel magnate who lives in Lakeshore and whose father Harry Zekelman founded steel tube manufacturer Atlas Tube in Harrow in 1984.

His first superyacht to carry the Man of Steel name was a 121-foot (37-metre) Heesen 3700 purchased in 2005. That was followed three years later by another Heesen Yachts custom build, a 160-foot (49-metre) vessel which was the Dutch company’s biggest boat at the time. They kept getting bigger, with a 2019 purchase of another Heesen, this one 163-footer (50-metre).

In the world of superyachts, size appears to matter, with ever-bigger and more luxurious private vessels being churned out for the world’s uber-wealthy.

Alas, the really super superyachts are reserved for the really rich billionaires, folks like Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, whose 523-foot Eclipse came with a “developmental cost” of just over US$1 billion. And that 2010-built superyacht is now only the third-largest private yacht among the global elites, with most of these elite owners preferring to sail in anonymity.

The same Dutch company — Oceanco — that built the latest incarnation of Man of Steel is currently building a half-billion-dollar 127-metre superyacht for the richest man in the world, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

Something handy for the owners of Oceanco-built vessels is the company’s “rapid response team” that will fly out anywhere to help out with any sudden servicing needs.

It’s a good time to be one of the world’s more than 2,700 billionaires, an exclusive club that now sits atop net wealth of US$13 trillion (C$17 trillion). Nearly all of them experienced big boosts in earnings during the global pandemic; several have just started tourism ventures for wealthy travellers in space; and, just this week, one of their own — Elon Musk — was named Time magazine Person of the Year.

Fresh from his sale to Zekelman, Spielberg, a billionaire entertainment industry mogul known for directing and producing a long list of Hollywood blockbusters, is also moving up. Construction is underway on his next 358-foot (109-metre) private superyacht. According to Club Yacht, Spielberg would rent out Seven Seas when he didn’t need it, with up to 12 guests at a time paying just over US$1 million per week to cruise the Caribbean in luxury.

Barry Zekelman, frequently in the news with wife Stephanie for their many philanthropic activities, has not been specifically identified as the new owner, but he’s the head of purchaser Zekelman Industries, and he was named in November as the new skipper by yachting publication sites as well as Forbes and Bloomberg news services.

Zekelman, whose wealth was most recently pegged by Forbes at US$2.3 billion (C$3 billion), could not be reached for comment.
