Chains & binders, item added to your cart, calculating sling angles: a guide for safe lifting.

Lifting slings are critical components of any rigging system. When it comes to choosing the right sling for your lifting needs, there are many factors to take into consideration such as working load limits, materials, number of legs, and hardware.

But a commonly overlooked factor in choosing the right lifting sling involves its rated capacities at different angles.

Sling angles form between the horizontal plane of your load and the sling, significantly impacting the load's stability and the stress exerted on the sling. Understanding the impact of sling angles on calculating the accurate capacity for your lifting device ensures the safety and stability of your lifted load.

This guide will help you understand the importance of sling angles, how to use them in determining the right capacity lifting sling, and best practices to follow.

What is a Sling Angle?

A sling angle is the area formed between the leg of a lifting sling and the horizontal plane of your load. As the sling angle decreases, the tension on the sling increases. This is because smaller angles require more force to lift the load vertically, putting more stress on the sling.

  • READ:   Tension vs. Compression Forces

When using a sling for a vertical lifting task, designated and qualified individuals use sling angles to calculate the appropriate capacity needed for the sling to lift the load safely and efficiently. Using slings beyond their limits can lead to overloading, causing sling failure, potential accidents, and deadly situations. Therefore, understanding how sling angles help with finding the right capacity is essential for ensuring the safety of personnel and the stability of the lifted load.

How to Use Sling Angles to Calculate Sling Capacity

The goal behind calculating sling angles is to determine the pounds per force (lb/f) on each leg when in a lifting position to ensure your chosen lifting sling can withstand the added tension. There are many factors to consider such as length of the sling leg (L), height of the load bearing points (H) , load weight (LW) , and load tension (TF) . However, the key to calculating the appropriate capacity required for your lifting sling starts with your sling angle.

Calculating Sling Angles

To calculate the angle between your sling and your load, you need to use the arcsin trigonometric function for precise measurement, as shown below:

Sling Angle ( θ) = arcsin(H/L)

However, many designated personnel find their sling angles using devices such as digital inclinometers or angle finders. These tools often have magnetic bases or clips to attach securely to the sling, where they find the precise measurement of the angle. Other ways of calculating the sling angle include using a protractor or a sling angle chart provided by your sling's manufacturer. By cross-referencing the sling's length and vertical height with the corresponding angle, you can find your measurement quickly and easily. (NOTE: These do not account for non-standard conditions, and may not account for all variables involved in your lift. Consult your sling manufacturer for any questions on these variables.)

EX:  If sling length ( L ) measures 11 ft. long, and sling height ( H ) measures 10 ft. long, then  arcsin (10/11) = ~65.38°.

Finding the Load Factor

Once you found your sling angle, then you can determine what capacity you need for your lifting sling. To do this, you need to find the corresponding load factor of your angle. The load factor is a multiplier used to calculate the increased tension in each leg of the sling as the sling angle decreases from vertical. It reflects how much the tension in the sling increases due to the angle of the lift.

  • BLOG:   Tensile Strength for Lifting & Rigging Equipment

In a single-leg lifting sling where the angle is 90° to the horizontal plane of the load, the load factor equals 1, meaning no additional tension needs to be considered for this lifting setup. However, if the angle decreases to 60° instead, then the load factor equals 1.154, indicating tension is making the load weight heavier than it actually is.

EX:   If you hoist a load with a three-legged lifting sling forms a 60° angle with the horizontal plane of your load, which weighs 15,000 lbs, then the minimum required vertical capacity of your sling = 15,000 x 1.154 = 17,310 lbs.

Additionally, another factor to consider is the reduction factor. This value represents the decrease in the effective capacity of a sling as the sling angle decreases. It shows how much the rated capacity of the sling should be reduced to due to the angle. Using the example above, if the slings angle is 60°, then the lifting sling is reduced to .866, or 86.6%, of its total effective capacity.

Many sling manufacturers include calculated charts for a load's increased tension and reduced capacity, as shown below:

Most sling manufacturers include these values for a range of sling angles, typically in increments of 5, starting at 90° and decreasing down to 30°.  For safe lifting, it's generally recommended to keep sling angles above 30 degrees.

Dividing Capacity by Sling Legs

Lastly, if you want to find the capacity for each sling leg, then divide the load weight  ( LW ) by the number of sling legs and multiply it by the tension factor ( TF ).

EX:  If  LW  = 1,000 lbs. and your lifting setup involves two sling legs each at a 45° angle, then 1,000 / 2 x 1.414 = 707 lbs. per sling leg.

No matter how many sling legs are included, your lifting device should be positioned in the center of your load for proper weight distribution. Not only is this a safe lifting and rigging practice, but it makes calculating sling leg capacity much more accurate.

Sling Angles for Other Hitches

Sling angles affect all types of lifting hitches, reducing rated capacities in different ways.

Basket Hitch

In a basket hitch, the sling is passed under the load with both ends attached to the lifting device. This setup effectively cradles the load, distributing the weight across both legs of the sling. A vertical basket hitch is often used when a balanced, stable lift is required.

When two lifting points are present in a basket hitch, the sling angles equal 90° to the horizontal plane of the load, with each leg supporting half of the load weight. However, with one lifting point, sling angles decrease, affecting the tension factor and increasing the rated capacities for the lifting sling.

angle chart for vertical choker hitches

Choker Hitch

In a choker hitch, the sling is wrapped around the load, with one end passing through the other to create a tightening loop around the load. This setup is commonly used for lifting cylindrical objects or loads that might slip if lifted with a straight or basket hitch.

Sling angles play a significant role in the lifting device's rated capacity for a choker hitch. Because of the nature of the hitch, there is more load compression and friction at the choke point, adding more stress on the sling. Therefore, measuring sling angles is crucial when determining the right capacity for your lifting sling.

When measuring sling angles for choker hitches, the plane  does not  align with the horizontal surface of the load. Instead, the plane aligns with the choked sling leg, as shown in the graphic. The sling angle forms between the plane and the lifted sling leg, otherwise known as the angle of the choke. As the angle decreases, so does its rated capacity to lift the load.

To determine the minimum rated capacity for your choker hitch, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Web Sling & Tie Down Association (WSTDA) put together charts where a specific range of sling angles correspond to the appropriate reduction factor.

Remember, this is the reduction of the  choker hitch capacity . When calculating the reduced capacity of your lifting sling, you need to use this value instead of other hitch capacities for proper calculation.

EX:  If a lifting sling has a choker hitch capacity of 8,500 lbs., and my vertical lift has a choke angle of 102°, then my reduced capacity equals 7,395 lbs. (8,500 x .87).

Best Practices for Lifting Slings

For any lifting operation, you'll want to keep in mind the following measures to ensure safety, efficiency, and longevity of your equipment:

  • Select the Right Sling:  Choose the appropriate material for your lifting sling based on the load's weight and shape. For example, synthetic slings work best for delicate loads, while wire rope slings work better for heavy, rough loads.
  • Follow Manufacturer Guidelines:  Adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations for inspection intervals and criteria for retiring slings from service.
  • Check Rigging Hardware :  Inspect hooks, shackles and other rigging hardware for wear, deformation, or damage. Ensure all components are properly rated for the load.
  • Ensure Proper Sling Usage:  Inspect the environment of your lifting job to keep your sling and cargo protected. Avoid sharp angles and edges, maintain proper sling angles throughout the lift, and keep your load balanced to prevent shifting, which can lead to dangerous situations.

Tackling moscow by train and boat.

Our first full day in Moscow started fairly late since we were still catching up on sleep.  Around 1, we finally were able to get our act together and get out the door.

We stopped by a cafe to get some breakfast and headed over to the Red Square.  Since the festival is going on, we had to go through metal detectors.  Once we cleared security, we reached the State Historical Museum which provided an entrance to the Red Square.

We walked the length of the Red Square, passing by the Kazan cathedral.

Under normal conditions, the Red Square is a large walking area with the State Historical Museum on one end and St. Basil's on the other end.  On the sides is the Kremlin wall on one side and then the GUM shopping mall and the Kazan cathedral on the other side.  Presently, the walking area has been considerably narrowed and the fesitval grounds occupying a large space between the Kremlin and the mall.

We even asked a stranger to take our picture!

After walking around the Red Square, we had to leave to meet up with our Metro Tour.

Moscow has famously pretty metro stations so metro tours are quite popular.  We booked a relatively inexpensive tour through a tour group which met outside of the Red Square.

On our way, we passed by the Kremlin gardens and the tomb to the unknown soldier and the eternal flame.

We soon met up with our group which, fortunately, was only 5 people.  Our guide told us that we were going to visit 8 stations during the 1.5 hour tour.

Honestly, a lot of the stations blended in to me so I won't be able to give you a detailed description of all of them.  However, I did learn that there are 222 metro stations and the trains come every 2-3 minutes reliably.  For that reason, Moscow > DC.

One of the first metro stations we visited had bronze statues all over of various depictions.  Many of the statues had superstitions tied to them.  For example, for a statue of the dog, it's held that if you rub the nose of the dog, you'll have good luck.  Consequently, most of the statue is tarnished - except for the nose.  I joked to Tomas that they probably rotate the "good luck" portion of the statue to ensure the entire statue gets polished.

However, I do remember some of the stations.

Novoslobodskaya is a station adorned with stained glass on the walls.

There was also Belarusskaya, which paid tribute to Belarus.

Another station which name I cannot remember but had pretty mosaics in the ceilings.

My favorite station was Komsomolskaya.  It's the busiest station and a hub for other connecting trains.  It was built during Statlin times and he wanted the station to embody beauty to set a good first impression to Russia.

I'd seen pictures of it beforehand since it's the most famous but it's so much more impressive in person.

Look at these ceilings!

sailboat lifting sling

Overall it was a very interesting tour.  Not sure of any other city which could offer a metro tour.  DC certainly can't...

After the tour, we headed back of the hotel to rest for a bit.  We had purchased tickets to a tour hour boat down the Moscow river.  The tickets were good for any time on any day and the boats left every 20min.  We decided to knock the tour out that day and headed over to the pier.

We arrived at the pier and saw a boat by the company we had purchased from boarding.  We approached and they shook their head and said it wasn't the right boat.

So we waited for another boat.

Another boat came along by the same company we had purchased from so weapproached them.  Again - we were told it wasn't the right boat and the boat we were looking for was coming.

A third boat came along which was NOT by the company we had purchased from.  By this point, it had been longer than 20min waiting and I was starting to suspect that the correct boat was actually one of the ones which turned us away.   We approached the 3rd boat to ask if they knew which boat we should be on.  However, when we approached,  they waved us aboard without scanning our tickets.

So, we boarded the 3rd boat....which was definitely not ours.

We settled into an upper deck, open air table to take in the views.

We passed by pretty buildings.

The somewhat impressive cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After about hour on the cruise, Tomas remarked that it had been about an hour so we should be turning around soon.  I reminded him that we actually had no idea how long this cruise was or where we would be dropped off.  Since we were on the wrong boat.

Fortunately, it did turn around and took us back to the pier.

For dinner, we decided to go to this burger place, Black Star Burger, which our guide told us about.  Tomas really liked his - I thought mine was OK.  It was a decent size patty with a mountain of Cole slaw on top.  We've realized that apparently Russians dislike getting their hands dirty while eating so some restaurants will give out gloves to use.  This particular restaurant gave out black gloves.

Since little mum has been asking about pictures which show my feet, I assume she wanted to see my new shoes.  I recently bought Allbirds which are suppose to be super comfortable walking shoes which you wear without socks and can be washed.  I didn't wear them too extensively beforehand, so that was probably my first error.  I also didn't bring another pair of good walking shoes,  which was likely my second error.  The Allbirds were great the first two days without socks.  Midway through the third day, my right foot was quite unhappy. Left foot was a trooper. So, now I have a bandaid on the heel of my right foot and wear socks.

Yellow 8-Inch Wide Weighted sling

8 Inch Wide Weighted Slings

Write a review.

Safe payments with trusted SSL protection

The 8-Inch Wide Weighted sling is manufactured from strong polyester and includes lead weights sewn into the double kneel pad. The weights help keep the shape of the sling and help keep it from floating, but the weights are not enough to keep adequate tension on the boat lift cable. It is recommended to use additional cable weights to keep more tension on the cable.

The weighted slings are made from marine-grade polyester and have UV inhibitors on the slings. The dyed coloring process guarantees that it will not transfer to your watercraft’s finish. The dual-sided galvanized 5/8 in. thick pear rings feature sheaf guards for protection. The measured length is for the sling material and does not include the length of the metal pear rings.

Boat lift slings are an economical alternative to steel or aluminum cradles.

It is not recommended that all ships be hoisted with slings. Please contact the boat manufacturer before attempting to hoist the boat with a sling. Not for lifting humans or overhead loads.

The Max Overhead Boat Sling Lift can handle up to 12,000 lbs and features a strong top beam that’s 14 ft long, 3 1/2 in wide, and 6 in high. The top beam is made of sturdy I-beam material and has a protective galvanized finish. The drive pipe, which is 14 ft long and 2 3/8 in wide, is also galvanized and supported by sealed ball bearings. The lift uses a 2-part cable setup with stainless steel aircraft cable, each section being 50 ft long.

It operates using stainless steel A-Drives, rated at 7,000 lbs each. The gear system is efficient with a double-worm design, and the motor is a powerful 1 1/2 HP stainless steel type. Control is easy with two momentary switches that are GFCI-protected. The lift moves at a speed of 2 ft per minute and comes packaged in a wood crate. If you choose the cradle option, it includes everything needed for setup except for wood bunks. The lift is shipped via freight truck in a large wood crate and requires a fork truck for unloading. It’s important for the buyer to arrange for delivery and unloading, and the freight company can be contacted for assistance.

Cable and block savers are included with the cradle to keep cable and block from going into the water. By using cradles instead of slings the overall rating of the lift becomes 12,000 lbs.

The BH-USA Max lifts ship complete in one shrink-wrapped 15ft wood crate. The Lift is shipped via a freight truck and will not be able to be unloaded without a fork truck.

A Major U.S. Defense Investor Has Links To Sanctioned Russian Oligarchs

Two children of alleged kremlin allies work on the investment team at 8vc, the firm led by palantir cofounder joe lonsdale., by david jeans , forbes staff.

V enture capital firm 8VC, which has invested in U.S. defense contractors like Palantir and Anduril, employs two children of sanctioned Russian oligarchs, Forbes has learned, at a time when the U.S. government is increasingly concerned about the proximity of foreign adversaries to Silicon Valley.

In 2022, the firm hired Denis Aven, the son of Petr Aven — a Russian banker worth an estimated $4.4 billion who at the time had been sanctioned by the European Union and the U.K. The senior Aven was later sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in 2023 for his role operating one of Russia’s largest commercial banks.

Also on the investment team is Jack Moshkovich, who joined in 2018, and is the son of billionaire Russian oligarch Vadim Moshkovich, a founder of the agriculture conglomerate Rusagro. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the elder Moshkovich was sanctioned by the EU, U.K., Switzerland, Canada and Australia over his alleged ties to the Kremlin and Russian president Vladimir Putin (he has not been sanctioned by the U.S.).

There is no indication that either of the sanctioned fathers have any financial relationship with 8VC. But their sons’ roles at the venture capital firm come as the U.S. government is paying more attention to foreign connections to the tech industry. Last month, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center issued a bulletin warning Silicon Valley startups about foreign adversaries using investment firms to access sensitive data and threaten national security.

The EU sanctioned Vadim Moshkovich for supporting “actions or policies which undermine or threaten” Ukraine.

“There's nothing illegal about hiring the son of somebody sanctioned,” said Daniel Fried, a former sanctions coordinator at the State Department, and longtime Russia policy veteran. But “if you're hiring the children of people that are reasonably assumed to be supporting the [Russian] regime — even if they might have had private doubts at one point — you better have done due diligence.”

Responding to an interview request for this story, 8VC’s managing partner and cofounder Joe Lonsdale posted a 950-word essay on X , saying 8VC has “a strict compliance and legal framework and always makes sure to respect and follow the law. We haven’t taken any money from their fathers or their fathers’ friends, and don’t need it.”

8VC did not respond to a request for an interview with Aven and Moshkovich. Petr Aven and lawyers for Vadim Moshkovich didn’t respond to a comment request.

In the X post, Lonsdale characterized this story as a “pathetic hit piece…looking to paint our two Russian colleagues at 8VC as a ‘scandal.’” He described Moshkovich as “a superstar,” Aven as “a talent,” and said Moshkovich’s sanctioned oligarch father is “a successful agricultural leader,” noting that “if you’re a businessman in Russia, and their leader says to meet, you go, regardless of your views.” (Both the elders’ Aven and Moshkovich met with Putin and other business leaders the day Russia invaded Ukraine.)

Several 8VC employees echoed Lonsdale’s support for Moshkovich and Aven on X. “People like @jack_moshkovich and Denis are what make 8VC and America great,” wrote 8VC cofounder Drew Oetting. Palmer Luckey, the founder of 8VC’s portfolio company Anduril, also responded, stating: “How dare we take the best people away from dictatorships!”

Started by Palantir cofounder Lonsdale in 2015, 8VC invests in an array of industries but has emerged as a prominent defense tech backer, alongside other major firms like Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst. With investments in Palantir and Anduril, which collectively have generated billions in government contracts, 8VC has broadened its portfolio with other military-focused unicorns, including the drone boat company Saronic and the counter-drone systems startup Epirus . On podcasts and blogs, Lonsdale has pointed to China’s rise as a reason for backing military startups. China is “building really advanced things that they're starting to compete with the U.S.,” Lonsdale said at a conference in March. “That became a very scary realization to us about 10 years ago so we went hard into defense.”

8VC now employs more than 70 people, including 10 investment partners. Moshkovich joined the firm in 2018 as an analyst, while completing his studies at Stanford University, where he’d arrived after growing up in Moscow and attending boarding school in the U.K. While at Stanford, he’d returned to Moscow to complete multiple summer analyst roles at McKinsey’s office in the Russian capital, according to his LinkedIn page.

Peter Aven was sanctioned by the U.S. in in August 2023.

Moshkovich, who received a green card and became a U.S. permanent resident over the summer, has worked on a portfolio of investments as a principal, typically focusing on seed and series A funding rounds. He holds multiple board observer roles, including with the AI company FieldGuide, which provides software for audit firms, and collaboration software company Rocklane. He does not appear to have been involved in any defense-related deals.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the EU sanctioned the elder Moshkovich, accusing him of supporting “actions or policies which undermine or threaten” Ukraine; he has disputed alleged ties to Putin and the Russian government, saying he is not involved in politics. In June, he dropped an appeal to remove the EU’s sanctions.

A long-time friend of Jack Moshkovich’s, Aven left Moscow when he was 12 and also attended boarding school in the U.K before arriving in the U.S. He attended Yale, and then completed an MBA at Harvard in 2022. According to Lonsdale’s X post, he hired Aven after learning that he’d lost a potential job opportunity at a private equity firm over concerns about the sanctions against his father.

His father, Petr, previously led Alfa Bank, but stepped down from that role after Russia invaded Ukraine and he was sanctioned by the EU due to his alleged position in Putin’s inner circle. While the EU later annulled some sanctions, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Aven last August, citing his role “having operated in the financial services sector of the Russian Federation economy.” Announcing the sanctions against Aven and several business associates, Treasury deputy secretary Wally Adeyemo said at the time: “Wealthy Russian elites should disabuse themselves of the notion that they can operate business as usual while the Kremlin wages war against the Ukrainian people.”

Aven has disputed the sanctions; last month, in seeking to lift U.K. sanctions, a lawyer representing Aven said his personal beliefs put him in “a position of opposition to the current regime.”

The younger Aven is now working with 8VC to launch an undisclosed venture as a so-called entrepreneur-in-residence, according to Lonsdale. In his post on X, Lonsdale said that while he detests Putin, “I happen to disagree that it’s a good strategy for us to isolate the smart, wealthy Russian people themselves.”

Fried, the former State Department sanctions official, agreed that "there are lots of talented Russians around the world, and the United States.” But, he added, “most of them are not the children of sanctioned individuals."
