Broker’s Comments

ATALANTA J is a very special classic motor yacht build by Feadship in 1958. She retains many of her original features and all of her charm. Through the years and with a series of smitten owners she has been thoughtfully updated and improved using modern technology that does not jar. She is a great sea yacht and is captivatingly pretty.

ATALANTA J is the perfect family cruising yacht. She has a lovely seating area forward as well as a covered dining area on her spacious aft deck. She is has well organised bridge with access to her engine room. The main deck saloon is elegant and light floods in, and there is a lovely combination of modern fabrics against her teak upperworks. Forward there is a lovely surprise with a forward saloon and galley area. Aft of the deck saloon are practical and spacious sleeping cabins, which all retain the charm of her original build.

She is safe and comfortable for the whole family and she has been cherished and much loved by her current owners who will be sad to pass her onto her next owners.

Owner’s Comments

ATALANTA J has been our family yacht for some years, and we bought her in Hamburg, Germany. On purchase my parents cruised down to the South of France and then to Corsica and Sardinia aboard her. Father is no longer with us, but we continue to enjoy ATALANTA J and we have based her and use her today in the azure waters of the Côte d’Azur.

During our ownership we have always kept up with the maintenance aboard ATALANTA J. We made a big improvement by changing the seating on the aft deck and fitting a large dining table, which makes her a very social yacht. The second berth in the master cabin has also been enlarged. During our ownership she has always had a full time captain but we are also very hands on with handling the yacht and we like being involved with her maintenance programme.

I love ATALANTA J because she is easy to handle and she is a wonderful platform for entertaining family and friends. I find her very easy to helm and being able to navigate her ourselves adds to the enjoyment of owning her.

I now have two small children and whilst we greatly enjoy the time that we spend aboard ATALANTA J, I don’t now have the time to invest in her to give her the care and love that she should have, so she needs new owners. We will be very sorry to say goodbye.

ATALANTA J presents a rare opportunity to purchase an iconic wooden Feadship that could use some TLC above and below decks.

First launched in 1958, this classic motor yacht was originally named SIROCCO. At 25.43 metres, she was the largest motor yacht under construction in Holland at the time.

In 2007 she returned to Holland for a two-year refit under the supervision of naval architect Felix Buytendijk. And then, in 2014, the ATALANTA J classic motor yacht went to Hamburg for another upgrade.

Exterior Design & Engineering

It’s believed that the ATALANTA J yacht owner has single-handedly crossed the Atlantic in her four times, showing off her sea-keeping skills.

Her aft deck was reconfigured during her 2014 refit to add storage and seating capacity and create a sheltered dining area under the semi-permanent bimini to make her more suited to use in the Mediterranean.

The ATALANTA J yacht has an upper and lower salon as well as outdoor dining for eight. It’s furnished with maritime-themed accessories, such as barometers and clocks, for an interior that feels classic.

Interior Design

Up to eight guests can be accommodated across four cabins, with additional space for two crew. The lodging comprises an owner’s cabin with two queen-size bunks, a wash basin and an en-suite bathroom, plus three twin cabins with wash basins and a shared bathroom.

Toys & Tenders

The ATALANTA J yacht also come with two tenders, which are ideal for shore excursions; a 3.5-metre Zodiac and a 4-metre stroke Yamaha.

She is a stunning classic motor yacht built in 1958 by the De Vries Shipyard to a design by De Voogt. De Vries and De Voogt are two of the three members of Feadship, the world leaders in the design and construction of the highest quality Dutch yachts. Originally named SIROCCO, the yacht was commissioned by Mr B.E. Ruys, an important ship owner from Rotterdam. At the time she was the largest motor yacht under construction in Holland. She had a two year refit in Holland in 2007 conducted under the supervision of naval architect Felix Buytendijk. More recently in 2014 in Hamburg she underwent another upgrade, when the current configuration of the aft deck was created. This has increased storage, seating capacity, and made for a sheltered area under the semi-permanent Bimini – ideal for modern Mediterranean use. It is understood that the previous owner of the vessel undertook 4 trans-Atlantic voyages on the yacht single handedly, illustrating her fantastic sea-keeping abilities. She is in need now of some attention both above and below decks to bring her back to her former glory, although it is understood that the teak on steel structure is as strong and sound as ever, and is still ready to give many years of active service. A new owner should expect to invest in this stunning vessel, in what is undoubtedly a very worthwhile project.

Truly Classic 90 sailing yacht Atalante for sale

The 27.5-metre sailing yacht Atalante is newly listed for sale with Bernard Gallay of Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage.

Delivered in 2009 by Dutch builder Claasen Jachtbouw , the sloop was designed by Hoek Design with multiple refits completed in 2014 and 2015, as well as a complete renovation in 2019.

She accommodates up to nine guests in five cabins, each with its own bathroom. The interior is finished with raised and fielded panelling in the traditional style and includes a comfortable saloon with a large TV and coffee table. There is also a deckhouse saloon forward with a dining table and navigation station where guests can interact with the crew while underway.

Atalante has two cockpits, the aft one for sailing activities with winches to hand and the other, amidships, for guests to relax or enjoy a meal, protected by a bimini that remains in place under sail or by a larger awning when at rest. At anchor, a platform folds out of the hull amidships giving ease of access to embark the tender.

In addition to being an excellent family cruising yacht, Atalante has also scooped some impressive regatta results, achieving second overall in the Palma Superyacht Cup in 2013 and winning the Hoek Design Cup two years running in 2012 and 2013. For windless passages, the MCA-compliant yacht for sale is powered by a single 250hp Lugger engine.

Luxury yacht sinks: Last body, believed to be tech mogul's 18-year-old daughter, is found

Search and rescue teams recovered the final missing person from a luxury superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily, the Italian coast guard has said.

The woman's body was discovered in the wreckage and brought ashore on Friday. She has not been identified.

However, Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, was previously reportedly unaccounted for, and the body is likely hers.

The Lynch family was aboard the Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht that sank after capsizing while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily on Monday.

Bayesian had 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew — when it capsized and sank within minutes of being hit by a predawn storm.

ITALIAN DIVERS FIND 5 MORE BODIES, 1 STILL MISSING AFTER SUPERYACHT DISASTER SURVIVOR'S OMINOUS TEXT MESSAGE

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday, and he was apparently aboard the vessel to celebrate his recent acquittal in a U.S. fraud case with associates who helped him through the trial. His wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors.

Christopher Morvillo, an American lawyer with Clifford Chance who defended Lynch in the fraud case, also died, as did Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, who testified in Lynch’s defense.

Morvillo’s wife, Neda, and Bloomer’s wife, Judy, were also among the dead. The body of onboard chef Recaldo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, was recovered Monday.

A nearby sailboat rescued 15 people, including a 1-year-old girl.

Divers have been searching for the missing in the hull of the Bayesian, which now rests on the seabed 164 feet underwater.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, sometime around 5 a.m. Monday near the port of Porticello, where it was anchored and then sank quickly.

Investigators are seeking to learn why the superyacht sank so quickly.

The CEO of a manufacturing company responsible for building the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week blamed a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew for the vessel’s demise.

Reuters reported that Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the British-flagged Bayesian in 2008, directed blame at the crew.

"The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors. The impossible happened on that boat ... but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell," Costantino said in an interview.

Costantino ruled out design or construction flaws as reasons the ship sank, saying it was unlikely after 16 years of trouble-free navigation, including in more severe weather than Bayesian encountered this week.

Instead, he blamed the yacht’s crew for the "incredible mistake" of not being prepared for the storm, which was included in shipping forecasts. The passengers should have been called out of their cabins and assembled at a safety point as the ship was preparing for the storm by pulling up the anchor, the CEO said.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino declared.

Prominent U.K. tech tycoon Mike Lynch, once considered the "British Bill Gates," is missing after the sinking of a superyacht off the coast of Italy on Monday.

The news comes just months after the entrepreneur was acquitted on fraud charges by a San Francisco jury, ending more than a decade of legal battles stemming from the sale of his company to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch, 59, earned a PhD from Cambridge before co-founding software firm Autonomy in 1996. Under his direction as chief executive, the company grew to become the largest tech firm in the U.K., and he became one of Britain's wealthiest men when he sold it for more than $11 billion to HP.

But shortly after the sale, Lynch was fired from his CEO position at Autonomy, and HP wrote down the company by $8.8 billion within a year, accusing Lynch of cooking the books to inflate its value.

The U.S. and U.K. both launched investigations into the allegations, and the U.S. formally requested Lynch's extradition to the U.S. in 2019 to face several charges including securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy.

According to The Sunday Times , Lynch, who is married and has two daughters, ages 18 and 21, was extradited from Britain in May of last year and spent 13 months on house arrest in San Francisco while he awaited trial. He was acquitted on all 15 charges in June.

"I am elated with today's verdict," Lynch said in a statement following his acquittal. "I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field."

HP largely won a civil lawsuit against Lynch and another former Autonomy executive in London in 2022, though damages have not yet been decided. The company is seeking $4 billion. In a sit-down with The Times last month, Lynch said he plans to appeal that verdict.

On the news of Lynch going missing on Monday, the author of The Times piece, Danny Fortson, wrote on X, "I am reeling from this news about Mike Lynch. The terrible irony is that when we sat down last month, he made it clear that he felt he had won a new lease on life, that his acquittal in America gave him a ‘second life.’"

What is known about the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily and those aboard

PORTICELLO, Sicily — (AP) — Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.

The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.

Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.

Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.

Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.

Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.

One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.

The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.

While scientists haven't attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.

Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations' panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.

Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.

“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.

Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.

“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."

As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Missing tech tycoon mike lynch’s co-defendant in $11b fraud trial fatally struck by car just days before billionaire’s yacht tragedy.

Missing UK tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s associate Stephen Chamberlain, who stood trial for fraud alongside him after the sale of software company Autonomy, died just days before the entrepreneur vanished in a shipwreck off the coast of Sicily.

Chamberlain was out for a run in Cambridgeshire, England, on Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle and died after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Chamberlain and Lynch, who remains missing after a yacht he was on with his wife and 18-year-old daughter sank Monday, were co-defendants in the decade-long fraud case that arose after the $11 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard.

Both men were acquitted last June.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Baceres, was rescued soon after the vessel went down after a major storm, but the British tech magnate — sometimes referred to as “the Bill Gates of the UK” — and his daughter, Hannah, are among six missing passengers who have yet to be found. The missing include four British nationals and two Americans.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

• A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

In a statement, Chamberlain’s family described him as, “an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.”

His lawyer, Gary Licenberg, who defended him in the long-running San Francisco fraud case, called his client a “courageous man” who “fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year.”

Chamberlain, 52, had been the vice president of finance at Autonomy, the sale of which prompted HP to sue Lynch and his colleagues, claiming they overstated the value of the company by billions.

HP wound up taking an $8.8 billion writedown a year after the purchase, later blaming “accounting irregularities” for overpaying for the purchase.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”

Manslaughter Probe Launched as Final Body in Superyacht Disaster Is Found

The body of the 18-year-old daughter of British technology magnate Mike Lynch—the last missing person from the shipwreck of the Bayesian superyacht that sank earlier this week—has been found, Sicilian authorities said Friday. Prosecutors are now exploring manslaughter charges as part of their investigation of the tragedy.

Hannah Lynch was scheduled to start at Oxford to study English next month after having completed her studies at the prestigious Latymer Upper School, where she was said to have been a standout student in literature and poetry.

“I’ve never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did,” wrote Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, head of English at Latymer, noting her fondness for Joyce, Faulkner, Conrad, and John Donne.

Divers working at the seabed more than 150 feet underwater discovered that she was trapped, like other victims , inside one of the ship’s cabins. Investigators determined the victims likely raced desperately for air as the vessel capsized, climbing upward before becoming trapped, as they were found in different cabins than they were supposed to be sleeping in.

“They gasped for air until the last moment, then they were dragged down without hope,” a source told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera .

The Bayesian, which was anchored off Porticello, a fishing village 10 miles east of the Sicilian capital Palermo, sank in the early morning hours on Monday morning when the area was hit by powerful storms.

Eighteen-year-old Hannah Lynch, whose body was found at the site of the Bayesian shipwreck Friday, was scheduled to matriculate at Oxford in September.

Authorities are now probing whether Lynch, her father, and five other deceased victims, including Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, could have been saved if not for a chain of human errors in advance of the disastrous shipwreck.

According to the Italian newspaper la Repubblica , investigators are looking at how the Bayesian’s crew responded to worsening sea conditions before the 180-ft sailing vessel sank in little more than a minute at 4:06 a.m. in the early hours of Monday.

The paper reported that the vessel’s captain, James Cutfield, was heard repeating “we didn't see the storm coming” when he was treated in hospital after the shipwreck.

However, la Repubblica reported that investigators have reviewed Automatic identification system (AIS) data that, along with witness interviews, suggests the crew had over 15 minutes to plan for and respond to the inclement weather, including rising wind and waves. “It was a fast but progressive worsening of the sea and wind conditions,” one source told the paper. The superyacht became unmoored and was overwhelmed by 100-mile-per-hour wind gusts.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long tally of errors,” Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipyard where the Bayesian was built, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera . “The passengers should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And why didn’t the crew know about the incoming storm?”

Mike Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, survived the shipwreck because she fled her cabin as conditions worsened.

A much smaller vessel anchored nearby, the Dutch sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell, saved some of the survivors after finding them on a life raft.

The Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating multiple potential cases of manslaughter against unknown persons, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

The agency also reported that the Italian Coast Guard has visited private homes and public places to retrieve any video evidence of the vessel and conditions in the area, which prosecutors are reviewing.
