FEADSHIP YACHT BROADWATER

The Worth Avenue Yachts team announces the completion of M/Y BROADWATER refit. M/Y BROADWATER (formerly known as RASSELAS) has undergone an impressive refit and hull extension. The highly anticipated refit has converted the Feadship from 171’ (52m) to 182’ (55.5m) in length.

The new BROADWATER features numerous upgrades that make this one of the most highly regarded Feadships to date. M/Y BROADWATER will join the impressive lineup of charter yachts offered at Worth Avenue Yachts.

About the Newly Refit Yacht BROADWATER

Captain Mark Jones says this about the completion of the new BROADWATER project, “It has been a pleasure to be a part of the BROADWATER program for over 6 years and the newest vessel is undoubtedly the most pristine product to be launched by her incredibly ambitious owner. With the technical difficulties of converting a private yacht to a commercial yacht and the stern extension, along with a full interior revamp and re-design of the sun deck, this was by far the most challenging and hence rewarding refit yet. I can’t wait for guests to enjoy this modern, classic Feadship.’”

The 3rd in the BROADWATER Feadship series

The 182’ (55.5m) BROADWATER project is the third in the BROADWATER series. The exquisite design of BROADWATER lends itself to the fine craftsmanship of renowned designer Adam Voorhees . Responsible for the earlier BROADWATER designs, Vorhees has worked closely alongside the owner to create stunning designs and eye-catching lines throughout each of his yachts. The newest BROADWATER conversion took place at the new  Huisfit  premises of Dutch Masters Royal Huisman in Amsterdam. The extensive refit features a 4 m/13 ft hull extension, including a re-styled stern. Additionally, the sundeck has been completely rebuilt, featuring a new composite mast with sun awning.

CHARTER YACHT BROADWATER'S INTERIOR

The interior of the vessel has been re-styled along with modifications to the Owner’s / guest + crew areas. Additional, board systems required for a Classification change (Owner’s brief) from “private use” to “commercial use.” New teak and furniture on the main and bridge deck along with painting of the superstructure and hull.

The Feadship ‘s striking design features many key elements that make this yacht a true masterpiece. The exterior contrast of navy and white exudes both luxury and class from every angle. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

Superyacht Owner Matt Voorhees Shares Details of Broadwater Refit

Serial superyacht owner Matt Voorhees discusses his love of refitting classic Feadships in the latest edition of our lockdown series, At Home with BOAT.

Voorhees' 56 metre Feadship Broadwater is currently undergoing a major refit at Royal Huisman and will be "on the water starting to cruise" by "late July to mid August" of this year.

As well as refitting the interior, Voorhees has added a stern extension to the yacht to incorporate a beach club, he told editor-in-chief Stewart Campbell in episode 15 of the interview series.

"What was needed most clearly for me was a stern extension that modernised and opened that very lovely boat to the sea […] So we have extended the boat," he said, adding that the new feature will also help attract charter clients.

Although the refit meant that Voorhees was not able to isolate on board as he would have liked, the Broadwater owner reasoned that "in some ways the boat will be more prepared for me and for our [charter] customers ", as the lockdown period has provided the Royal Huisman shipyard with extra time to work on the yacht.

As Broadwater is Voorhees’ third Feadship in 10 years, the superyacht owner also explained why he loves the brand, and what exactly makes these yachts "a very special breed of boat".

Finally, Voorhees discusses how he balances personal use with the charter season on board  Broadwater , as well as advice for owners undertaking their first refit – namely suggesting that a "pedigree yard" is the best place to have such work done.

The bodies of five people found after the superyacht sinking have been identified by the Italian coastguard.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among the dead.

Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo have also been identified.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch remains unaccounted for.

Search and rescue teams have been looking this week for six people who were unaccounted for after the Bayesian superyacht sunk on Monday.

Here's a reminder of who they are:

  • UK technology tycoon Mike Lynch , co-founder of the firm Autonomy and dubbed the "British Bill Gates"
  • His daughter, Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student
  • Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International
  • His wife Judy Bloomer
  • Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance
  • His wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer

Italian authorities have not yet identified the five bodies recovered from the shipwreck, which brought the total number of victims to six.

The body of on-board chef Recaldo Thomas was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

As we reported in our previous post, divers in Sicily have recovered a fifth body from the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht.

Identities of the recovered bodies have not yet been confirmed by authorities.

A fifth body has been recovered from the wreck of the yacht, the civil protection authority has told Sky News.

This brings the total number of confirmed deaths to six, after the body of chef Recaldo Thomas was found on the day of the sinking.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returned with a blue body bag to Porticello at just after 8.45am local time.

The search operation to find the missing has been plagued with difficulties.

Conditions underwater have been described as "complex" and "prohibitive".

Here, Sky News looks at the factors that have made the search and rescue operation so difficult...

An Italian doctor has shared more details of a British mother's fight to keep her one-year-old daughter alive as the yacht capsized.

Charlotte Emsley, who held her baby above the waves, woke up in the water after falling asleep on the deck of the Bayesian, said Dr Domenico Cipolla, of Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo, Sicily.

"She told me that two minutes after falling asleep with her baby they were in the water, she did not understand how this happened, it went dark.

"Her partner was not with her, he was in another room."

Dr Cipolla said mother and child were physically in "a good condition" when they went to a hotel on Tuesday, but both parents were "so shaken by what has happened, it was a tragedy for them".

"She sometimes cried for her friends in the hospital."

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

Divers were struggling to reach the fifth body discovered yesterday but daylight has brought with it renewed efforts, says news correspondent Ashna Hurynag , in Sicily.

The air was "filled with the sound of sirens" as four bodies were transported to ambulances on Wednesday afternoon.

The significance of the discovery has not been lost on the 50 people "gathered to sort of watch this extraordinary search and rescue effort" as divers once again "plunge 160ft down" this morning, says Hurynag.

As of 3pm yesterday afternoon, it was "very clear that there was no signs of life".

"Those [four] bodies have now been taken to mortuaries. A formal identification process will now get under way."

It may take some time for doctors given how long the bodies were underwater, says Hurynag.

Under Italian law, relatives must be informed before the identities of the dead are released.

The search will resume for the sixth and final missing person this morning.

Identities of four bodies recovered from the wreckage have not been confirmed by authorities, despite conflicting media reports.

The process of bringing the fifth located body to shore was described as "ongoing" by Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Fire crews from the Vigili del Fuoco said they had been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.

Remote-controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search, the Italian coastguard said.

Those named as missing in the disaster were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the Bayesian superyacht, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

An investigation of the incident is taking shape, with the ship's captain, James Cutfield, reportedly quizzed by authorities for two hours as they began questioning all crew members.

Survivors have been recuperating at a hotel complex in Porticello, where authorities were gathering witness statements.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Bayesian shipwreck.

Five bodies were found by search and rescue teams yesterday, with four of those recovered and taken ashore.

The scenes at the port of Porticello were solemn as the bodies made their way off boats and onto land, before being driven away in ambulances.

Onlookers wiped away tears, while emergency service staff and others involved in the operation formed a guard of honour.

The identities of the recovered bodies have not yet been confirmed by authorities.

Teams today will continue their search for the sixth and final person unaccounted for and recover the fifth body found yesterday.

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers at the scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 164 feet underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life emerging over three days of searching.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a half-mile offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipmaker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.

Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.

But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the sailboat that came to the Bayesian’s rescue said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 246-foot tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.

Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were also on the wreck Wednesday.

In all, some 27 divers were taking rotations, including four who helped with the recovery of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement, which for the first time Wednesday referred to the operation as a “recovery.”

The limited dive time was designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”

“It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door.”

Divers recover 2 bodies following sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily

Wednesday, 21 Aug 2024

Rescue personnel operate in search for the missing, including British entrepreneur Mike Lynch, in the area where a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Porticello, near the Sicilian city of Palermo, Italy, August 21, 2024. REUTERS/Louiza Vradi

ROME (Reuters) - Divers scouring the wreck of the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily have found the bodies of two of the six passengers who were missing, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The boat, owned by the wife of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was carrying 22 passengers and crew and was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday.

Rescue teams did not immediately give the names or the sex of the drowned people, who are the second and third victims of the shipwreck to be found.

The body of the yacht's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was located shortly after the vessel sank.

‘devastated’ mentor spoke with nyc jeweler missing in sunken bayesian yacht days before tragedy: ‘it doesn’t look good’.

The “devastated” mentor of the luxury Manhattan jeweler who vanished when the Bayesian yacht sank off Sicily spoke with her protége days before the tragedy — and admitted she has little hope that the missing passengers will be found alive.

In an exclusive interview with The Post, goldsmith Cecelia Bauer recalled inviting Neda Morvillo to a luncheon with fellow jewelers on Monday, the same day the superyacht capsized off the coast of Palermo.

Jewelry designer Neda Morvillo and her husband, Christopher Morvillo, are missing after after superyacht sank off Sicilian coast.

Morvillo, who has a fine jewelry business in Midtown, and her lawyer husband Christopher Morvillo are among the six people who went missing during the tragedy.

But officials are holding out hope they may be trapped in the ship alive, surviving on air pockets 160 feet below the surface.

“I’m totally shocked,” Bauer said upon learning her former student and Morvillo’s husband were aboard the doomed yacht.

“I’m devastated because I can’t believe she’s one of the missing. It doesn’t look good … I would find it hard to believe that anyone has survived this long.”

Divers operate in the sea to search for missing people after a luxury yacht sank near Sicily, Italy on August 19, 2024.

Bauer told The Post she trained the missing jeweler approximately 20 years ago.

A website for Morvillo — who goes professionally as Neda Nassiri — credits Bauer as her mentor.

“She was a student of mine,” Bauer said. “She came to my studio and she studied with me for many, many years, and she was able to go out on her own, and get her own studio and a place to work.

“She became a very close friend. She’s very dear to me. And this news is just absolutely devastating.”

Morvillo declined Bauer’s lunch invitation over the weekend but didn’t offer a reason why.

“She said that she wasn’t going to be able to come,” Bauer explained, adding that she had “no idea” Morvillo had been sailing the Mediterranean Sea on a superyacht.

Bauer described Morvillo as “very upbeat, very happy,” and “incredibly smart.”

“She was glad to help anybody out that she could,” Bauer said. “She was extremely generous…She was very special.”

Bauer explained that she met Christopher Morvillo only on several occasions, but recognized him as a “really nice fella” who was “very well connected.”

Christopher Morvillo was the couple’s ticket onto the yacht as they were celebrating British tech tycoon Mike Lynch ‘s win in his longstanding fraud trial earlier this summer.

Mike Lynch, former chief executive officer of Autonomy Corp departs the Rolls Building on June 27, 2019 in London, England.

Lynch, the owner of the yacht, and his 18-year-old daughter are also lost at sea.

“It’s all just pretty horrible,” Bauer added. “I don’t even know what to say, it’s so terrible. I can’t imagine what her family [is going through],” the grieving goldsmith said.

Neda and her husband have two daughters, Sabrina and Sophie, who were due to fly out to Italy and spend time on the luxury boat before it sank.

“He was so excited about the trip,” fellow attorney  David Oscar Markus wrote in a blog post after discovering the couple was missing.

“He couldn’t wait for his daughters to meet up with him and his wife. I am so thankful the girls had not yet arrived when this tragedy struck.”

Christopher Morvillo’s mother has holed up in her Long Island home eagerly awaiting developments, according to neighbors.

“Cathy is distraught, she is holding out hope they are still alive,” a neighbor told DailyMail.com Tuesday.

“It’s heartbreaking. We are waiting with bated breath,’ the person said. ‘It’s a wonderful family and we are all grieving along with them. His mother still has hope that there’s some chance her son and daughter-in-law are alive.”

A rapid inflatable emergency lifeboat in Porticello Harbour on the Sicilian coast where the search continues for British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, who are among six tourists missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Italian divers were exploring the sunken Bayesian late Tuesday after using jacks to smash the 1¹/₄-inch-thick glass, according to local reports.

They reached the common areas of the 184-foot luxury vessel, but have not yet made it to the cabins — where one expert theorized the missing passengers might be trapped, but alive.

The search and rescue mission could take hours. Because of the depth, divers can only stay underwater for 12 minutes at a time.

The Bayesian capsized with 22 people — 10 crew members and 12 passengers — after it was suddenly struck by a freak storm around sunrise Monday morning, officials said.

Fifteen people managed to escape before the superyacht went down.

The ship’s Canadian-born chef Thomas Recaldo marks the only confirmed death in the tragedy.

In addition to the Morvillos and Lynch and his daughter, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer ad his wife, Judy, are still unaccounted for.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”
