Two years ago, Wally founder Luca Bassani and the Wally team, now part of the Ferretti Group conglomerate, introduced a new style called the wallywhy200 . It had some of the brand’s hallmarks like the open bow, but it seemed to wander off the reservation with its full wide-body design. The 89-footer (the 200 refers to 200 GT of interior volume) had the same space as a 125-footer, according to Wally. This quest for space led to the removal of side decks and a full-beam interior. At the bow, a forward owner’s cabin had an unprecedented 270-degree panoramic view of the horizon.

I had a chance to sea-trial Wally’s latest model, the wallywhy150, last summer, before its official launch earlier this week at the Yachting Festival du Cannes. I came away impressed.

The Wally team wanted more than just a 79-foot sistership that with ten less feet in length than the 200. It wanted to pioneer new ideas.

Bassani says the model name “why,” which stands for “Wally Hybrid Yacht,” has nothing to do with the propulsion of the boat. “It combines elements of a motoryacht and a faster semi-planing vessel,” he told me. “It offers the best of both worlds: the stability and the strength of an explorer, while keeping the comfort and elegance of a luxury yacht.”  The 150’s hull architecture is consistent with the larger 200, but the appendages have been reduced to better align the 79-footer’s proportions.

Like the 200, the exterior of the wallywhy150 may initially raise eyebrows. It leaves normal way behind, with a continuous hull flow from stern to bow, no side decks and no portholes, as part of the Wally family feeling. But stepping aboard unravels the function behind these stylistic choices.

The wallywhy150 shares elements such as the bow stateroom for the owners, while the full-beam design maximizes interior space. Where it breaks new ground is at the rear part of the boat. The main salon is integrated with the aft cockpit, separated by a retractable glass door that creates a seamless interface between indoors and out.

The salon is also designed on two levels (including an impressive 9.2-foot-high aft section), with the use of large structural windows and a teak ceiling that is curved to resemble a wave. It delivers an unobstructed view of the sea from any angle. Just a few steps from the engines, the area remains remarkably quiet with the doors closed.

The flybridge is also a different design than the wallywhy220. The 150’s more open feel evokes a Mediterranean-style ambiance. The aft portion features a lounge adorned with freestanding sofas, a wet bar accompanied by a dining table, and, moving toward the bow, the helm station.

The helm’s distinctive square shapes, extensive use of carbon fiber across the dashboard and futuristic design are definitive reminders of being aboard a Wally.

These dual systems actually reflect the thought behind this new motoryacht. It’s slow and fuel-efficient, but can go fast when you need speed. The exterior is a bit ungainly, granted, but the interior is more svelte and contemporary than any yacht in its class. The main suite with a 270-degree sea view, the open stern, and the performance all reflect Wally’s design ethos. In short, it’s a shapeshifter, offering multiple boating lifestyles across the same hull.

Meet the wallywhy150

Wally in Monaco has unveiled the wallywhy150, a smaller version of the wallywhy200 that made its debut in September.

The wallywhy150 has a length overall of 78 feet, with gross tonnage of 150. Interiors are by Studio A. Vallicelli & C.

“The challenge was to incorporate some of the 200’s best features into a smaller package while opening the door to new and innovative solutions in this size range,” Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and chief designer, stated in a press release. “Most importantly, we have maximized and optimized her exterior spaces as much as possible. They are absolutely enormous and totally unique for her size in the industry.”

The wallywhy150 has a sundeck with dining, a grill, fridges and more. On the main deck aft, the salon, which has 8-foot-2-inch headroom in some spots, connects to the cockpit for one-level entertaining. Forward, the high bow allows 270-degree views from the master stateroom. An additional three guest staterooms are on board, along with quarters for four crew.

With the optional triple Volvo Penta IPS1350 engines, the builder says the wallywhy150 can reach a maximum speed of 23 knots. Standard power should generate a top hop of 21 knots.

When will the wallywhy150 debut? In spring 2023, with Hull No. 1 scheduled to launch in February.

Fort Lauderdale – 18 October 2023 – The new wallywhy150 is set to make waves at the largest in-water boat show in the world. Gathering exceptionally positive feedback at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the wallywhy150 will make its US debut at the upcoming Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) from 25 to 29 October 2023.   “ The wallywhy150 has been developed on the same concept as the larger wallywhy200, and in fact both models were conceived at the same time four years ago, ” says Stefano de Vivo, Managing Director at Wally. Following the successful debut of the wallywhy200 in 2021, there’s every reason to be excited about the arrival of her stunning smaller sister. “What we’re doing is offering those same features of the bigger vessel but in a smaller package, with design decisions that have created a unique and ultimately highly liveable 23.99-metre motor yacht with unparalleled interior and exterior spaces, and a layout that will be envied by everyone who sees her. We didn’t see the smaller volume as a compromise ,” de Vivo adds, “ but rather a challenge and a new way to innovate – and at 150 gross tonnes, the wallywhy150 is actually a true ‘space-ship’, pushing into new frontiers for a sub-24-metre yacht. ”   Of course, there are certain key criteria that define the wallywhy200 that were central to the design of the new wallywhy150. There’s the master cabin in the high bow at main deck level complete with sweeping 270-degree panoramic view, and there’s the nod to one-level living found on the wallywhy200 with an extraordinary split-level saloon-cum-dining area that leads straight out onto the aft beach, coupled to interior design from Studio Vallicelli Design. Up top, there’s a vast saloon en plein air that runs nearly the entire length of the yacht ­– part sundeck, part chill lounge, and part party space – with the trademark angular hardtop providing shade and weather protection while extending seamlessly from the stealth-style glass raised pilothouse.   The effect is not only immediate in terms of striking aesthetics – unmistakeably Wally – but also in terms of the genius of the spaces and what they offer. This is the traditional idea of what a yacht should be completely inverted to show what a yacht can be: bold, brilliant, and utterly practicable for big days out on the water with family and friends.   The forward master takes everything the wallywhy200 offers and slides it into the smaller 150 with barely a hint of compromise. The comfortable double bed still gets its walkaround space and still benefits from that glorious yawn of a view, a true aquatic amphitheatre to watch the ever-changing play of the sea and sky. Below, there are options for either a VIP, guest double and guest twin cabins, or two VIP cabins. Whichever layout is preferred, the stretch of glass that enwraps the hull and superstructure means vast vistas and natural light in abundance.   Back on the main deck, the interior is split between a lower and upper saloon area, with low-rise steps connecting the two. The standard layout would be to have the sofa on the upper level and dining on the lower, but this is not set in stone. Indeed, flexibility is key here, and this space begs to be configured in original ways – and, of course, customisation in function, materials and finishes is the Wally way, meaning each wallywhy150 can bear the unique mark of her owner. In addition, there is an option for an open-plan galley to open up the area even more.   “ There are plans to do a few funky configurations to please the different uses of the yacht that different owners will have, ” says de Vivo. “ Some of our clients will use it as a family boat, some will use it as a dayboat and others will use it as a chase boat. That’s kind of the point – we can provide an exceptional platform and then let people’s imaginations run wild .” For a yacht that packs in surprises and innovations at every turn, it’s hard to pick out highlights – but the aft terrace on the main deck is a clear contender. “ The terrace-on-the sea is as ingrained in Wally’s DNA as carbon fibre ,” enthuses Luca Bassani, Wally’s Founder and Chief Designer . “ It was first introduced aboard Tiketitan, which had a main salon below deck overlooking the open transom offering unique access to the sea. In 2012 the terrace-on-sea concept was reinterpreted for the first wallyace, which featured an aft owner’s suite and VIP cabin opening onto the terrace-on-the-sea. It’s something that has been there from the beginning and it’s one of the key differentiators Wally has versus other boats, which is the feeling of connection with the sea. ” In order to do that, says Bassani, you have to have an uninterrupted view and continuous flow between the inside and outside. It’s an idea the wallywhy150 takes and expands upon to deliver a truly exceptional guest-area experience. “ The terrace-on-the sea concept was then carried over to the new wallytenders and the wallypowers – it’s a fil rouge that connects the Wally DNA, and you could be on a Wally sailing yacht or a wallywhy and they both feel like a Wally, ” explains Bassani . “ It’s challenging to design, because you are near the water and there’s a lot of engineering that has to be completed to ensure it’s a safe space that won’t get flooded, but our experience comes to the fore in that regard and it’s a feature that is superbly designed and executed on the wallywhy150 .”   “ Wally design always follows function, so the pilothouse’s angular design which is reminiscent of the wallypower range – and the original wallypower118 in particular – is a consequence of the T-top and is almost a happy coincidence, ” Bassani adds. “ But when you use the same kind of shapes you end up with the same kind of solutions, and that’s also why we have chosen a similar colour to the 118. It’s a little bit of an homage to that iconic design .”   In engineering terms, Wally has been able to draw not only on its own experience developing ultra-lightweight and geometrically complex sailing and motor yachts, but also on the extensive expertise of the Ferretti Group Engineering team. The result is dramatic, with the hull carrying huge expanses of glass that not only provide the forward, elevated master suite with the trademark wallywhy wraparound bow windows, but also create double-decker full-height windows in the split level saloon.   “ The structure has to be very well thought out, ” says de Vivo , “ because basically it’s a glass cage, but you also have to consider the piping and cable runs, air-conditioning ducting and other technical elements that have to be incorporated. There’s a lot of planning and engineering design that goes into it, and the reality is also that we are using glass of a thickness you would typically find on a 50- or 60-metre yacht, which confers exceptional strength to the structure. That is not typical for a sub-24-metre boat. ”   The wallywhy150 is not typical in any respect. The aft cockpit flows from the lower part of the saloon, creating a vast indoor-outdoor terrace that flows uninterrupted from the upper saloon forward to the sea aft. Clever design means stoppers can be raised to separate the lowering aft portion of the terrace from the forward part, creating a seaworthy barrier for passagemaking while allowing unrestricted water access at anchor. The hydraulic aft platform can be lowered both for launching a tender or as a submerged beach and swim platform, and the design allows not only for the carrying of a variety of water toys but also of a 3.9-metre tender.   The wallywhy150 will also offer her owners the capacity for extended cruising, with a range of around 400 miles promised at cruising speed. Powered by optional triple Volvo Penta IPS1350s, the 150 will be capable of a mile-chomping 23 knots top speed, with standard Volvo Penta IPS 1200s delivering 21 knots. Moreover, she will be an exceptional sea boat. “She’s extremely stable,” says Bassani, “and that’s mostly down to her hull shape, but also down to her construction which uses carbon up top to reduce weight aloft.” Of course, she is also offered with stabilisation to ensure comfort both underway and at rest.   The combination of avant garde looks, astonishing spaces and admirable performance perhaps explains why a concept like the wallywhy, which eschews boating convention, already boasts a growing fanbase among owners. “ The reach of the wallywhy range has already proven surprising, because Wally has never been for everybody – we’re not afraid to push boundaries of design function, and we always take things to the extreme ,” Bassani admits. “ But the surprising thing is that a lot of clients who visited the wallywhy200 were very surprised by the volume you get inside, the usability, and the shock of the exterior space, and then it all starts to make sense to them,” he continues. “A lot come back after seeing other boats saying nothing else compares to it, and we believe the wallywhy150, because of what it offers for a 23.99-metre yacht, will garner an even stronger reaction .”   Adds de Vivo, “ Like with all new Wallys, the wallywhy150 is revolutionary and it has to be seen, touched, felt and experienced first-hand – it’s very hard to judge without being on board. The spaces and the volumes are incredible. The saloon, for example, is over 2.5 metres high ,” he continues, “ which is crazy when you think about it because it’s a boat under 24 metres – you don’t even get that on a 70-metre yacht. And the deckhead there is curved fore-and-aft and transversally, creating a dome-like effect – it’s just incredible and you have to see it to believe it. We asked a lot to our engineers but when you find those solutions you start to see new opportunities and innovative ideas, like the deckhead, start to evolve. It all comes together and the result is something really new in this highly competitive size range .”

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.  

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Tech tycoon mike lynch, teen daughter among missing after deadly tornado sinks massive yacht bayesian off coast of sicily.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among the six people missing after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, sources said.

The 59-year-old, who was once dubbed the UK’s answer to Steve Jobs, was onboard the 160-foot sailboat Bayesian with 22 others when it was struck by a tornado off the port of Porticello at sunrise, according to a person familiar with the rescue operation.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is also among the missing passengers, according to his wife, Angela Bacares, the Telegraph reported .

Bacares and 14 others, including a 1-year-old child, managed to escape the boat before it went down.

At least one passenger was killed, the Italian coast guard said.

In addition to Lynch and his daughter, there are four other people unaccounted for, including two Americans.

The boat was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers at the time.

The names of those killed or still unaccounted for weren’t immediately released by authorities, but Italian media reported that the dead man was the yacht’s onboard chef.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, leaving five dead and two missing:

• The first two bodies found inside the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht were identified as British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah, according to a report.
• Two more bodies have been recovered but have yet to be identified.
• Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph . 
• Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it slowly disappearing.
• Italian authorities have said the chances of the remaining passengers surviving the disaster were very small, but “never say never.”
• A r are and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian superyacht’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

Those who survived said the trip had been organized by Lynch for his work colleagues, according to sources.

Lynch — a wealthy tech founder — was acquitted just two months ago by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges linked to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The sale had cemented Lynch’s reputation as Britain’s answer to the Apple magnate — but it quickly turned sour after HP wrote down Autonomy’s value by $8.8 billion.

In the wake of the jury’s ruling, the entrepreneur said he was “elated” to be cleared after denying any wrongdoing and blaming HP for botching the integration of the two companies.

Meanwhile, the coast guard said divers were trying to inspect the wreck of the Bayesian.

The six missing people are believed to be inside the boat’s hull, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service said.

The search and rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

The boat is believed to be owned by Lynch’s wife.

The Bayesian, which was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020, is owned by a firm called Revtom Limited — of which Lynch’s wife is named as the sole shareholder.

The 30.5-metre Wally sailing yacht Wally Love has run aground following a storm on the Spanish island of Formentera. Footage taken by a bystander shows the yacht out of the water and listing on her starboard side close to shore. Several other sailing yachts have run aground alongside her. 

The State Meteorological Agency informed the public of a "strong destabilisation of the atmosphere" yesterday (13 August).

The latest weather update was published an hour ago and warned of hail "exceeding two centimetres in diameter" and very strong gusts of winds in excess of 100km per hour.

A number of other 24-metre-plus builds are in the direct vicinity according to BOATPro , including the 35-metre Benetti Sea Belle and the 29.1-metre Sanlorenzo yacht Francamarina .

At the time of writing, local news outlets have claimed that more than a dozen sailing boats are aground. Several injuries have also been reported but are unconfirmed.

Wally Love was delivered in 2007 to a design by Luca Bassani . She is equipped for bluewater cruising and has a family friendly layout which includes a line-free cockpit, a versatile foredeck for entertaining and a swim platform that lowers into the water.

Greek authorities say they have rescued nearly 150 migrants trying to reach the country by sea in small boats over a 24-hour period, including one that had 115 people crammed into it

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities rescued nearly 150 migrants trying to reach the country by sea in small boats over a 24-hour period, officials said Wednesday, including one that had 115 people crammed into it.

A coast guard statement said the vessel was located in distress Tuesday off the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesbos that’s close to the Turkish coast. Three patrol vessels picked up 67 men, 27 women and 21 children, who were taken to a migrant reception center on Lesbos.

The boat sank shortly after the passengers were taken off it, the statement said. It was one of the largest single boatloads of migrants to reach the island from Turkey in recent months.

Smugglers typically target Greek islands close to Turkey’s coastline, but in recent months they have increasingly chosen longer routes from Libya to Crete , much farther south, and from Turkey through the central Aegean Sea, where coast guard patrols are more relaxed.

The coast guard also said Wednesday that 25 men and seven boys were rescued from a boat having difficulty 30 nautical miles (35 miles) south of Crete. It quoted the migrants as saying they had spent three days crossing the Mediterranean Sea after boarding the vessel in eastern Libya.

Two of the men were arrested on suspicion of belonging to a migrant smuggling ring that had organized the voyage.

On Tuesday, the coast guard said a total 146 migrants had been rescued in small boats off Crete and in the eastern Aegean.

According to data from the United Nations refugee agency, nearly 30,000 migrants have arrived illegally in Greece so far this year, slightly fewer than in Italy and Spain. Most are Afghan, Syrian or Egyptian nationals.

The number of migrants arriving illegally in Greece has eased slightly this year following a post-pandemic spike in 2023.
