The French-speaking Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy, also referred to as St. Barts, is well-known for its opulent resorts, immaculate beaches, and sophisticated dining and shopping options. Discover the breathtaking beaches on the island, each with a distinct charm of its own. Favorites include Gouverneur Beach for its quiet beauty and crystal-clear waves, Shell Beach for its scenic location and shell-covered shoreline, and St. Jean Beach for its lively environment and water sports. Take part in a range of water sports, including windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. The island is a great place to do underwater research because of its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life.

St. Barts, Caribbean Islands, Resort Beach Vacations - Live Beaches

See Gustavia, the capital of Saint Barts, which is renowned for its posh shops, galleries, and fine dining establishments. Discover the quaint alleys with their vibrant colonial architecture, go to historical locations like Fort Gustav and the Wall House Museum, and go boutique shopping for designer clothing. Explore the island’s shoreline and neighboring islands by taking a hike or a drive along the Lighthouse Trail (Sentier du Phare), which provides expansive vistas. The trek ends with the picturesque Colombier Beach, which is only reachable by boat or foot. Here, you may unwind and go snorkeling in crystal-clear waters.

Savor fine eating at the chic eateries in Saint Barts, which combine French, Caribbean, and international cuisines. Savor delectable sweets, excellent wines, and fresh seafood at Le Gaiac, Le Tamarin, and L’Isola, among other places. Discover the lively nightlife of the island at clubs, lounges, and beach bars. Savor live music and beverages at places like Nikki Beach and Le Ti St. Barth, or dance all night long at popular locales like Bagatelle and Le Yacht Club. Saint Barts combines natural beauty, high-end amenities, and a laid-back island vibe to provide an opulent and exclusive getaway experience.

TICKET TO PARADISE – ST. BART’S SHOCKING LITTLE SECRET – IT’S AFFORDABLE

THE endless hype that surrounds exclusive St. Barts – a forest’s worth of tabloid pages splashed with so-and-so fully naked on a beach or what’shis-name aboard a gazillion-dollar yacht – is just one side of life on this charming, 8-mile-square French Caribbean island.

This unapologetically elitist playground for the very rich, the very famous and their entourages has a split personality.

There’s the glitz and glam side – the velvet ropes, the lunches a table over from Ron Perelman, an afternoon of sun tanning next to Liz Hurley, the hotel where you’ll pass Kate Moss (right) in the lobby, the shopping trip to Hermes.

Then there’s the far more authentic St. Barts, the one that exists, like the Hamp-tons, as an Eden for those seeking rest and relaxation.

There are its dozen unspoiled beaches, the almost-virgin and ridiculously dramatic landscape, the noticeable attention to detail (a complete lack of litter, for instance). A visitor could rent a villa in one of the smaller settlements outside of Gustavia, and never see anyone but staff.

Because of strict development laws, architecture is uniformly pretty – i.e., no casinos, golf courses or other tourist traps that plague most Caribbean islands (you won’t find a Pizza Hut or a Dunkin’ Donuts, either, thank goodness).

Better still, there’s no crime. Unless you consider $15 for a ham sandwich criminal. Here’s the best part — you can do the real St. Barts affordably (sans that villa, of course). Don’t believe us? We’ll spell it out for you.

BEFORE YOU GO

The currency is euros (worth $1.17 at press time), but the dollar is accepted nearly everywhere. For information, visit sbhonline.com, st-barths.com and saint-barths.com.

There are no direct flights to St. Barts, so you’ll have to visit the urban Dutch side of St. Martin, like it or not. Fly into the island’s Princess Juliana Airport on either US Airways, United, Delta, Continental or American. As of press time, the cheapest mid-December flight on American from Newark via San Juan was $243 RT (orbitz.com).

Once in St. Martin, either take a small 19-seater to St. Barts ($156/RT on WinAir; http://www.fly-winair.com ), or go for the cheaper alternative, one of two 45-minute ferries that go between St. Martin and St. Barts (to Gustavia Harbor): the Rapid Explorer, a high-speed ferry with LCD screens and soft music that departs from Chesterfield Marina three times a day ($115/RT, rapidexplorer.com); and the cheaper, slower and far less luxurious Voyager, which leaves Marigot twice a day ($76/RT; voyager-st-barths.com).

Getting to either ferry terminal from Juliana airport is a 20-minute, $15 cab ride.

LAY OF THE LAND

Sunny St. Barts, averaging between 70 and 86 degrees year-round and surrounded by shallow-water reefs, is semi-arid (peep the cacti). It’s unusually verdant this year after record rainfall, much to the delight of its many hummingbirds.

Only a few main roads circle and branch out through the island. Between Gustavia (the island’s buzzing capital and only official town, it’s where most of the restaurants and bars are) and the small airport, the main highway splits off in four directions at a roundabout (traffic circle).

Take the northwest road out to the Flamands and Colombie areas, where the surf tends to be rougher but the ambience much quieter, or go east to St. Jean and neigboring L’Orient for plenty of affordable shops and restaurants. Continuing east you’ll hit the protected beaches of Marigot and Grand Cul-de-Sac.

Unless you’re content to stay near your hotel, renting a car or scooter is mandatory. Hills are steep and the narrow roads, packed with buzzing mini-scooters and mini European cars, are a bit dangerous to walk. Rent a scooter, mini-car, jeep or boring old sedan from Tropic’All Rent in Gustavia on Rue Oscar Roi II (from $36/day; 590/27-64-76).

Taxis are another option, but are unmetered and can be expensive. Pick one up in front of the ferry terminal in Gustavia or call one to come pick you up, and negotiate the fare ahead of time (590/27-66-31). Hitch-hiking is also a regular means of transport.

Don’t worry about the street addresses of places to visit. Street signs point you to most every restaurant, hotel and beach on the island. If you’re walking around Gustavia, just ask someone where to go.

The beaches range from white sands to rocky shores. All are public. Grand Saline, in the south, is reached after a short hike over a rocky sand dune and it’s the most popular of the top-optional beaches (naked kite flying, anyone?). Up north, St. Jean Beach, bisected by the upscale Eden Rock hotel, is usually the most crowded. Grand Cul-de-Sac, on the far east tip of St. Barts, is mellower.

You won’t find much jetskiing, or other motorized recreations, so popular in the Caribbean. There is scuba diving, however, and happily, the coral reefs have recovered from the last major hurricane that hit in 1999. Marine Service, in Gustavia, offers half-day snorkeling tours on a catamaran with an open bar and snacks for $76/pp ([590] 590/27 70 34).

St. Barts surf culture is a noble effort, but it’s more about the designer Quiksilver clothing than anything. On a windy day, the best waves reportedly are found in the bays of Toiny and L’Orient.

You may not be able to afford the food at Maya’s, the famed A-lister’s eatery hidden behind the warehouses near the harbor, but there’s plenty of great eats on the island that won’t leave your wallet empty.

The Baz Bar in Gustavia has sushi favorites like California rolls (eight for $8) and larger $21 unagi plates. Eat on the patio right on the harbor’s edge (www.bazbar.com).

Also in Gustavia, dine inside or out at Vietnam on Rue du Roi Oscar II. This relatively affordable restaurant serves up every major Far East Asian ethnic dish (minus Japanese and Indian), from $13 Thai stuffed shrimp to $15 sweet-and-sour pork. The portions are small, so grab an appetizer (590/27-81-37).

Morbidly located between two cemeteries off the main road in L’Orient, JoJo Burger’s $5 cheese burgers and $4 hot dogs are worth the tombstones (590/27-50-33).

If it’s pizza you crave, head to Le Bouchon, in the L’Oasis Plaza in L’Orient, for a hearty $9 pie. Customize it from an ingredient list that includes ham, tomatoes, onions, artichokes, chorizo and salmon (590/27-79-39).

HOT TIP: The best buns on the island, and there are many, are found at Petite Colombe in Colombier. Each morning, the bakery prepares fresh baguettes and pastries for many of the island’s hotels to the delight of any noses in the vicinity (590/27-95-27).

WHERE TO STAY

Hotels (there are no resorts on St. Barts) fall into two categories in the high season: Those with rooms starting at over 200 euros (USD $235) a night, and those inching just below. Surprisingly, nearly a dozen are quite affordable.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Gustavia Harbor becomes infested with yachts and the celebs who charter them. The best place to spy on the shenanigans is from the balcony of the two-star Sunset Hotel, located across the street from the harbor. While noisy, its studio-sized rooms are adequate – i.e., minibar, hand-held nozzle in the shower – and the price quite doable. Best of all, it’s not La Prequile, a grungy harbor motel that sits opposite the Sunset, described by more than one person as “the closest thing St. Barts has to a housing project” (from $127; [590] 590 27 77 21).

Hostellerie Des 3 Forces in Morne de Vitet, a sparsely populated area hidden away in the hilly center of the island, is off in its own little world both physically and metaphysically. Owned and operated by a chef-cum-astrologer, Hubert Delamotte, it has 12 rooms (most of which have kitchenettes, all have terraces) each with a Zodiac theme. It’s less cheesy than it sounds; in fact, the modest rooms are somewhat minimalist, and quite soothing. The property’s unobstructed view of the Atlantic is one of the prettiest in St. Barts (from $190; 3forces.net).

Over in L’Orient, the eight cottages that make up the very pretty Le Manoir de Marie appear old-school Caribbean bucolic, but on closer interior inspection, they’re feminine and French. Mostly everything here, from the pink curtains and wooden furniture to the courtyard’s statues and fountain, comes from Normandy. Frankly, we don’t know why some of the rooms are so inexpensive, but who cares – jump on them (from $153; lemanoirstbarth.com).

The hilltop Tropical Hotel in St. Jean is a modest and pink hotel. It does, though, live up to its name, as “jungle” pretty much sums up the landscaping (but it sure smells good). Step out from the vegetation, and you’ll get an amazing view of the sea and photogenic rock formations. The on-site oval pool is small, but clean, the staff is friendly and you’re a short walk from the beach (from $218; tropicalhotel.net).

Hotel Le Village, atop the same hill in St. Jean, was built by Plantation owner Andre Charneau about 40 years ago and is one of the island’s oldest hotels (Greta Garbo was one of its earliest guests). This family-run property has spacious rooms and cottages with awesome views of the turquoise Caribbean (from $223; villagestjeanhotel.com).

Le P’tit Morne is a cheap (but cheerful) option in the secluded northwest Colombie Beach area, offsetting the not-so-cheap $474/night and up rooms at the nearby Francois Plantation. The Morne’s 14 apartment-style units are simple and clean, with balconies boasting water views. The only problem is the road out here is steep and bumpy; not fun at night (from $192; timorne.com).

Celeb safari THE official sport on sleepy St. Barts? Celebrity spotting. Though they tend to hole up in private villas, the stars do come up for air, food and water (read: alcohol). Here, our favorite spots to watch them. HOTEL GUANAHANI, Grand Cul-de-Sac Why: Even when Victoria’s Secret isn’t having its annual shoot here, this posh hotel (at left) and spa, whose bars are open to nonguests, is rarely sans professional models (like Giselle, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss to name a few). Is it any wonder Arnold Schwarzenegger also stays here? With doting wife Maria at his side, of course (leguanahani.com). Tip: If you happen to win the lottery, try the hotel’s new “Wellness Suite” above the spa. It offers a 180-degree sea and island view, unlimited after-hours run of the spa area (pool and hamman), and one free treatment per person per day. It’s a mere $1,310/night. LE YACHT CLUB, Gustavia Why: This spot debunks the whole “there’s no nightlife in St. Barts” myth. It features a club with DJ right on the harbor and a clientele that reads like an issue of Source magazine, such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Mariah. Oh, and Kim Cattrall, too (690 49-25-33). Tip: If you arrive at 11:59 p.m., it’s a ghost town. After midnight, it’s wall-to-wall clubbing until 4 a.m. LE SELECT, Gustavia Why: What with all the scooters parked outside, this place could almost be called a French biker bar. Inside it has Americana to spare: Green Bay Packers stickers, state license plates, an iPod stereo blasting R.E.M. – even, on occasion, Jimmy Buffett and members of Bon Jovi, who might just put on an ad-hoc concert (590 27-86-87). Tip: Good place to meet local DJs who, between pre-party drinking, will let you know where that night’s post-midnight action is taking place. LE TI ST.-BARTH, Pointe Milou When hot French women model local fashions while dancing on tables, be sure rap stars are in attendance. At least, that seems to be the M.O. of this spot, owned by the same woman behind Yacht Club and located on the far east corner of the island. This restaurant/club, literally draped in velvet, is Diddy-approved (590 27-97-71). Tip: Come when there’s a full moon for a wild lunar party. GRAND SALINE BEACH Ever since JFK Jr. was photographed naked on this public beach in the southeast corner of the island, celebs make a point to show up barely clothed. Take Brad Pitt, for example, who the paparazzi also caught sunbathing -every inch of him. Tip: In high season, take a taxi, as the small lot fills up quickly. Also, pack a lunch – the one restaurant here quickly hits capacity. GUSTAVIA HARBOR Anyone who’s anyone doesn’t need a posh hotel or villa on St. Barts, they just sleep on the mega yacht they came in on. That’s what Ron Perelman does, as do a slew of others. Tip: Come over Christmas when as many as 300 yachts fill the harbor, unloading a slew of stars and their loyal posses. C.B.

Beautiful St Barts – Where the Rich and Famous Celebrate New Year

Beautiful St Barts – Where the Rich and Famous Celebrate New Year

While many partygoers head to the ski slopes or Sydney Harbour for the New Year celebrations, discerning people-in-the-know sail to the Caribbean island of  St Barts (Saint Barthélemy) . With its balmy sunshine, French-influenced cuisine, exclusive service, and indulgent ambiance, it’s the perfect luxury winter escape. If you don’t have your own luxury yacht, you can easily charter a luxury crewed vessel and join the party.

Prior to New Year’s Eve, the waters around St Barts are filled with some of the  world’s most beautiful superyachts and chartered sailboats . Overhead, the cloudless blue sky is abuzz with private jets and helicopters dropping off yacht owners, party-goers, entertainers, and top chefs. Behind every pair of designer shades, there’s usually a well-known face!

Your  crewed yacht charter in St Barts  will have an experienced captain, crew, and top-notch chef who will be well prepared for your onboard celebrations. However, in this close community, you may be lucky enough to be invited to one of the spectacular parties on the island or on a superyacht moored nearby.

If this sounds like your sort of New Year celebrations, then a  luxury yacht charter in St Barts  is definitely for you.

How to Enjoy New Year’s Eve in St Barts

Those on yacht charters can be caught out if they don’t know the St Barts’ protocol, but your experienced captain will already know the ropes, including where to berth or moor. They can also call ahead and secure reservations for you at places like Le Yacht Club, Do Brazil, Bonito, or Bagatelle.

If you moor offshore, enterprising motor launches act as taxis, shuttling you to and fro for entertainment, drinks, and nightlife. The glittering jewelry stores, boutiques, and bars are just a short stroll along the promenade at  Port de Plaisance, Gustavia .

saint-bathelemy-1578701_640.jpg

On-board, your private chef will have everything ready for your  New Year’s Eve party  so you can sit back and watch the surrounding frenetic activity as private chefs, stewards, caterers, and crew set up tables, chill the champagne and tick off deliveries of lobster, caviar and oysters for the festivities. It helps that St Barts was formerly a French commune, leaving a legacy of world-class cuisine, champagne, and French-produced wine for discerning palettes to savour.

St Barts New Year’s Eve Regatta

Relax on the gently bobbing deck of your luxury charter yacht and watch the  St Barts New Year’s Eve Regatta . It’s more of a catwalk for showing off yachts rather than a competitive race of speed, but it’s all part of the New Year’s Eve tradition in St Barts.

After an evening of partying, when the clock strikes 12 the harbor is filled with technicolor pyrotechnics. Flares and lights are outdazzled by impressive fireworks, each trying to outdo their neighbor. Nikki Beach and Le Plage are top places for enjoying the fireworks over Baie de St-Jean, but you can just lounge on your own deck and watch the show.

Once the New Year celebrations are over, St Barts returns to its peaceful, chic, and beautiful self. Indulge in a pampering massage at one of the upscale spas such as La Cabane De L’Isle or set sail to explore the surrounding beaches. Yachts will gradually disperse one by one back to their other life after enjoying a  New Year’s Party in St Barts  that’s like no other.

Yacht Charters in the Caribbean Island of St. Barts, St. Barths, St. Barthelemy or St. Barth.

St Barts is probably the best Caribbean Island to find large sailing yacht racing regattas, the largest private luxury superyachts in the world and the best fun! We have St Barts charters of all types available including crewed luxury yachts, superyachts, both motor and sail, catamarans and more, so please contact us for the latest list of boats for rent.

St. Barts, St. Barths, St. Barthelemy or St. Barth, as it is sometimes called, is a great Caribbean yacht charter location which has recently been growing in popularity - particularly for visiting luxury yachts.  St. Barth's popularity for yacht charters is due in part to its convenient location - roughly midway between the two major sailing centres of Antigua and Virgin Gorda .  Off course there is also its 14 lovely beaches and excellent cruising potential. Visitors are always impressed by the Island’s sheer exotic natural beauty of both waterways and beaches. So this is where you find natural Island beauty as mixed with vibrant nightlife and fantastic shopping and restaurants.

Visitors to St Barts in the northeast Caribbean are predominantly of the upscale crowd. Yacht owners and yacht charterer come to this famous Caribbean Island with a view to relaxation on white-sand beaches, entertainment in clubs and restaurants and to cruise through the clear blue waters. High-end shopping and dining at quality restaurants is very well established. Increasingly a vibrant nightlife industry is also caters to those luxury yacht guests who wish to celebrate well after the sun goes down.

St Bart's Gustavia Luxury Yacht Harbour

St Bathelemy has a striking and dramatic geography which juts out of the warm lazuline Caribbean waters. The island was created from the eruption of a volcano many years ago and is made up of very steep and dramatic hills. St Barts offers some of the best Caribbean beach clubs, both for their beauty and their popularity amongst the rich and famous.

The Island features a rolling landscape with picturesque villages and broad valleys. It is surrounded by coral reefs, sparkling 'gin-clear' waters with blue-green lagoons. All this, plus her great harbour, helps make St. Barts a favorite retreat for luxury yachts and the rich and famous. Whilst renowned for natural beauty, St Barts rewards travellers with delicious cuisine, chic boutiques all wrapped up in a soothing relaxed exotic ambiance. Although the Caribbean Island is small, her chic French atmosphere and culture makes many larger islands pale next to her as sailing destinations.

Some Activities

These include Spa and Wellbeing centers, massage, yoga, sailing, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, scuba diving, visiting nearby islands, walks, shopping and nightlife. For nightlife Bête à Z'Ailes, La Plage, "Nikki Beach" and le Ti St Barth are worthy of mention as is the "Yacht Club" with its "Live Screen Concerts" on Gustavia Harbor, and "Casa Nikki" also in Gustavia, as well as "Le Feeling", in Lurin. Your crewed luxury charter yacht will off course also provide a full range of wonderful activities, culinary delights and relaxation, depending on your mood.

Sailing Regattas & Events on St Barts

There are a couple of colourful sailing events on St Barts annual events calendar which are worthwhile noting for your yacht charter dates as these times of the year are perfect for renting your yacht. These yachting events include the St. Barth Regatta (celebrated just before Lent), the Saint Barth's Cup (held in April and sponsored by the Saint Barth Yacht Club) as well as the three-day International Regatta in May with racing events.

St BArts

The St Barths Bucket Regatta is of particular note and is held in early April or late March. The St Barths Bucket Regatta is a gentlemanly yacht race for luxury yachts over 100 feet in length. The race was conceived many years ago by wealthy yachtsmen, Tom Taylor and Abner Doubleday, and has flourished to over 26 entries in 2005. 2006 & 2007 saw even more entries with 2008, 2009 and 2010 expected to continue growth. The race is a rare chance for larger yachts, both private and charter, to gather together and parade around a beautiful race course in a good natured and friendly test of speed and skills. Sailing superyachts racing together makes the St Barths Bucket Regatta an amazing spectacle indeed.

Apart from the impressive yacht racing events, cruising areas, and fine beaches St Barts you can also enjoy great onshore entertainment at night time with comfortable and leisurely dining on you yacht charter vacation.

There are many beautiful beaches to suit different tastes in St Barts, so you can anchor your yacht at one of the 14 or so that fits you. St Bart’s beaches have a liberal feel thanks to its French history and topless sunbathing common. Anse de Grande Saline and Gouverneur Beaches are two of these. Some other beaches here aren’t as free spirited such as St Jean Beach and Flamands Beach.

There is a passion for fine dining and gastronomy in St Barth and many chefs indulge in a modern French style of cuisine. In addition there is also a number of contrasting culinary styles on display from healthy fresh and light food right through to more traditional French cuisine. Most of the island’s different areas provide numerous quality restaurants which will be noted in your itinerary and you can also ask your captain for local recommendations.

More About St Barthelemy (st Barts, St Barths) Yachting St Barthélemy is also known as St Barts. It is an overseas collectivity of France and it is located in the Caribbean. This collective of beautiful Caribbean islands is part of the Leeward Islands in northeast Caribbean comprising the French West Indies, along with St. Martin and Guedeloupe . The island of Saint Barthélemy lies 35 kms southeast of St. Martin. The island is volcanic in origin and it has many shallow reefs that you can explore. You can begin your yacht charter vacation from the capital called Gustavia which also has the main harbor.

While on a Saint Barthélemy yacht charter vacation you can also add in a visit to the surrounding islands of Dog Island, Anguilla and St. Martin. These islands mainly comprise of the most amazing beaches as well as live corals under the surface of the sea. There is an interesting bay to visit such as Grande Saline Bay that provides you a temporary anchorage for smaller yachts. The St Jean Bay you can see the narrow cut through the reef and this prove to be an interesting sight.

Discover the Marine Reserve You can also discover the marine reserve that was founded in 1999 on your charter boat. The reserve covers a total area of 1,000 hectares and there is a zone that is dedicated to scientific experiments. The topography of Saint Barthélemy is rich in coral reefs and the area has been declared a protected area and it also promoted by the Environmental Commission.

Total 22 Beaches for the Public St Barthélemy has a total of 22 beaches that are accessible by the public. Out of these 15 are suitable for swimming and diving. The beaches are divided into the leeward side and the windward side. The beaches on the windward side are perfect for windsurfing. St Jean beach is perfect for all types of water sports. The Lorient Beach is quite long and it has good shade options. Other prominent beaches in the area include Ane Tony and Grand-cul-de-sac. It is usual to see a number of large luxury superyachts moored off the best beaches during winter.

Turtle and Whale Watching Tours The best way to see Caribbean marine life is from the decks of a luxury yacht that you have rented. There is an interesting option of the turtle and whale watching tours as well. These are special, guided tours where you can come in close proximity to the dolphins and the whales. The interior areas of St Barthélemy consist of interesting sites such as Morne Vitet. This is the highest peak of the island and the view from the top is nothing short of spectacular. Tourism in St. Barthélemy attracts around 200,000 visitors every year. There are about 25 hotels in Barthélemy where you can stay but many people prefer the private luxuries of their superyacht. You can even take the St. Barthélemy yacht tour on New Year's Eve. The whole island becomes a party zone at time with loads of music, dance and eating.

If you go for nature trails in St. Barthélemy then you will be able to see the teeming varieties of flora. Sea grapes and palm trees are commonly seen and there are many varieties of cacti as well. You may also be able to see the terrestrial animals such as snakes, rats and mongoose.

In conclusion St Barts is a luxury mega yacht playground which attracts some of the world's biggest and best luxury charter yachts. The Caribbean Island is a fashionable hotspot for the rich and famous, however it is also large enough for you to find your own serenity and to explorer its beautiful natural wonders and first class sailing.
